Question of the day

* I got nothing. So, out of grudging respect for a large number of commenters, I’ll just make this a Major League Baseball open thread.

  1. I’d simply like to thank the Cardinals for losing last night, which likely saved Wrigleyville from a drunken melee.

I’d also like to add that I hope the Cubs can knock you out of the wild card race if you’re still in it when the Cards visit Chicago later this month.

    Go Cubs.

  11. Losing and then hours later clinching the division is the Cubsiest thing that could have happened last night.

  12. Until something is in hand, I remember the 1969 Cubs. “The Cubs will shine in ‘69″ on into our memories and dreams. I don’t get my hopes up because someone else make have a better game and beat your team.

Once the trophy is in hand, that is a different story.

  14. There is nothing greater and stupider than October baseball. Teams play 162 games in beautiful weather, only to face a gauntlet of short series amid rapidly failing weather conditions to determine the champ. But, as with Illinois politics, you have to find a way to win with the syatem you have. Go Cubs.

    Comment by JB13 Friday, Sep 16, 16 @ 3:32 pm

  15. Dear Chicago Media, if the Cubs do make it to the series could you promise not to interview any little kid that says they have been waiting their whole life for the Cubs to be in the series? I think it rather insensitive to those who have died and remained loyal their whole lives.

  16. I assume you’ve all read about the Padres GM getting a non-paid 30 day suspension today for being unethical when dealing with some other teams’ GMs. He cooked the books and witheld medical info and treatments on several players he was trading. Right On the heels of the Cardinals hack story and with all available technology it’s so lame for these guys to think they won’t get caught. SMH

  17. @Wensicia “The best team in baseball, Chicago Cubs!”

The best team in baseball each year is the one that wins the last game of the season. Until that time the cubs have the best record and not much else.

Just like a cubs fan, give them a rowboat and they think they are captaining the Queen Mary.

  18. things I’m enjoying in baseball lately….Jose Abreu hitting lights out and Tim Anderson. Everything about Tim Anderson. He’s a good addition. and scoring in every inning for the first time since 1912. As for the World Series, that’s so 2005. Been there, won that!

Comment by Amalia Friday, Sep 16, 16 @ 3:42 pm

  19. Rich, before you go, you forgot to: 1) congratulate the Cubs on a great season so far, 2) wish them well in the postseason, and 3) tell all your readers, “We’re all Cubs fans now.”

    An oversight, I’m sure.

  21. I do sincerely wish the best for Cubs fan friends this year and plan to be much more gracious to them (whatever happens) than some of them could manage for me in 2005. Being jealous and pea green with envy while feigning disinterest is not attractive.

Comment by Responsa Friday, Sep 16, 16 @ 3:52 pm

  22. Great regular season for the Cubs — but any team can beat any other team in a best of give series, with just a couple of breaks.

Before 1969, it was the best NL-record-team vs. best AL-record-team for the World Series.

Makes you wonder if the Yankees would have won all those titles if they had to get through two rounds of playoffs every year.

  25. Still a fan of my Jeckel and Hyde Cards this year. What has made this an interesting season is that when the offense is on track the defense lets the team down.

The fans never knew which team would show up to play, and the injuries did not help. Inconsistencies abound.

They are leading or at the top in many statistical categories yet it is not reflected in their record. Never I thought they would have a better road record than at home - unheard of.

And @Stark my optimism abounds for our Cards, but congrats to the Cubs for having a great year.

Comment by illini Friday, Sep 16, 16 @ 4:11 pm

  26. “The best team in baseball, Chicago Cubs!” Of course that means when (ok, sorry…”if”) they crash and burn, that would make this season just the epitome of Cub-ness, just like ‘69. And ‘84. And ‘03. I mean after all, that’s really the core of the Cubs ethos isn’t it? It’s not just the perennial mediocrity, it’s the occasion grasps at glory only to dash the hopes and hearts of their loyal fans, right?

Comment by Skeptic Friday, Sep 16, 16 @ 4:13 pm

  27. As a Cards fan yes they have a history of winning it all with their not-so-great playoff teams, but part of me almost wants them to miss this year to force some dramatic action by ownership. I think Matheny’s job should be in question. He’s a good clubhouse guy and motivator but still bad with in-game decisions. Measured up against the other 3 managers this team has had in the past 35 years (who are all in the HOF), he just doesn’t measure up. Also they should let Holliday walk and start the process of retooling with money from expiring contracts over the next couple of years (Wainwright, Peralta, and eventually Molina). Yadi is the only one that appears irreplaceable at this point.

  28. Does Idaho have a professional baseball team?

    Comment by Blago's Hare Friday, Sep 16, 16 @ 4:19 pm

  29. #RonBurgundy - Agreeing with parts of what you say. I doubt that Matheney’s job is on the line just given the injuries they have had and the Minor league players they have had to bring up.

But he has made some questionable in-game decisions. Yet, in retrospect, had some of those games ended differently he would be considered a genius.

And, as good as some on the team have been and are, Yadi is the one indispensable player on the team. Smartest catcher in all MLB.
