Question of the day

Posted in:

* After the White Sox won the World Series, team owner Jerry Reinsdorf and manager Ozzie Guillen brought the trophy to the Statehouse. I ribbed then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich (a notorious Cub fan) for playing such a high-profile role in the festivities and Reinsdorf snapped at me, saying Sox fans shouldn’t be so mean to Cub fans. I replied that when Ozzie (a notorious Cub hater) told me to back off, I’d back off. Besides, Cub fans were just horrible during that playoff run. Their constant heckling in comments here and elsewhere was brutal and uncalled for.

Anyway…

* The Question: Should White Sox fans cheer for the Cubs during the playoffs? Take the poll and then explain your answer in comments, please.

  1. It is the polite thing to do. Chicago solidarity. I am a Cardinal fan and I hope the Cubs win the World Series this year.

  2. Oh hell naw! Next you’ll be telling me that Montagues and Capulets should get together, dogs should marry cats, and other such nonsense should happen. Rich, stick with your instincts, this isn’t even a question that should be asked!

  3. one city, two teams, but we should support each other, except when we play each other.

  4. Everyone ought to hope that the Cubs do well in the postseason. Think of the restaurants and bars and the wait staff that will benefit from the additional business. Chicago needs the extra revenues. Another plus is that it will serve to distract us from the miserable 2016 Chicago Bears.

  5. Even if you’re not a Cubs fan, as a matter of civic pride you should support any local team that goes into post season.

Comment by Not It Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 9:35 am

  6. Nope. Loyalty. I’m a native Cards fan and could never root for the Cubs. I wouldn’t expect their fans to be any different.

Comment by Ron Burgundy Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 9:35 am

  7. I voted yes. After a steady drumbeat of negativity in recent months, the city of Chicago, all of it, could use some positive news.

So Yes. We should wish them well. We’ve tried everything else to make their fans tolerable and nothing else has worked. So why not give it a try!

Comment by Just Chilling Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 9:39 am

  14. Voted Yes. I have watched more Cubs than Sox this year. That’s what happens when you promise your fans you are going to be a winning team and end up in the dumpster 7 years in a row. Sox better be careful. If Robin gets an extension, I might just give up on them.

Comment by Ducky LaMoore Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 9:39 am

  15. And! The point has already been made. This is good, really good for the local economy. Go team from the Northside! (Sorry, that’s as close as I can get today! lol)

    Comment by A guy Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 9:40 am

  16. Nope. Up until 2003 I would root for the Cubs in the post season, but then I realized that if the Cubs got a title before the Sox we’d never hear the end of it. So I vowed not to support the Cubs in post season until the Sox had a title.

After the Sox won the Series I thought I could go back to supporting the Cubs in the post season but I still can’t. I realized that the Sox would have to put up 3-5 titles before the Cubs could get one if they are going to get any respect in this town.

Comment by wndycty Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 9:40 am

  17. I wish I could vote “yes” and “no.” I think for most downstate Sox fans, the answer s/b yes. But, I can understand if true South Siders refuse to support the Cubs.

    Comment by G'Kar Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 9:40 am

  18. Personally, I’ve already decided that if I do venture into that stadium during the post season, I’ll probably wear my full Sox regalia. But I haven’t been there for years and I’m still not ready to commit.

Being a Downstate White Sox fan ain’t easy. It’s a small club, to say the least.

  22. No. Please don’t root for the Cubs. We’ve never needed your validation before, we don’t need it now. Leave us to enjoy the world’s largest gay bar, Completely Useless By September, doormat of the National League jokes all the way to the World Series. You can come to the parade though, if you want.

Until then, have fun with the Bears and your own insecurities.

  23. I voted yes as a true Cubs fan (I watched the entire 23-22 Phillies game live as a kid) I didn’t think I would root for the Sox, but once I saw a Chicago team in the World Series I had to. I’m hoping we get to see that again this year!

Comment by Vote Quimby! Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 9:50 am

  24. I’m obviously biased but how could you not root for them to succeed after more than a century of futility? A true fan buys the team then hires one of the best execs in the business to completely overhaul the team while changing the culture. It’s a feel good story even if you hate the Cubs. I’d ask all of you Sox and Cards fans to root for us to win it all just this once. Then you can go back to hating the Cubs if you want.

    Comment by Cubs in '16 Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 9:50 am

  25. This is an issue near and dear to my heart. I grew up rooting for both teams, but I became a big Cubs fan because they were on TV all the time. I can understand why Sox fans hate Cubs fans, many Cubs “fans” are annoying. They attend games but don’t pay attention, there are more Cubs fans, being a Cubs fan is the cool thing to do. While I still root for both teams and I am probably still a bigger Cubs fan, I attend more Sox games than Cubs games. I really don’t know who I would root for at this point if the Cubs played the Sox in the series (regular season I root for the team that needs the wins more, but I don’t really follow those games closely).

In summary, people should do what they want, this is baseball, not real life. Root for the Cubs, root against the Cubs, whatever pleases you. On the other hand, I see no reason for Cubs fans to root against the Sox.

    Comment by Name/Nickname/Anon Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 9:51 am

  26. Forgot to add….classy move by the Sox for the billboard message. Let the healing begin!

Comment by Vote Quimby! Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 9:51 am

  27. I should add I have been blessed as a Cards fan to see 7 World Series in my lifetime, and I can count the support I’ve received from my Cubs fans friends over all that time with no fingers. And I’m fine with that.

Comment by Ron Burgundy Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 9:51 am

  28. Meh, White Sox fans should cheer for the White Sox by showing up for home games. It’s brutal to see Cominskey empty like that. It’s such a good time, win or lose.

To the question, I’d hope so, yes, but I’m not delusional. Many Sox fans have a chip on their shoulder the size of Mt. Everest.

I’ve always been a fan of both clubs. I also put ketchup on hot dogs and prefer thin-crust pizza. I’m a true Chicagoan; try to tell me my business, and I’ll challenge you to perform an unnatural and impossible act upon yourself.

2005 was the best Chicago baseball year in nearly 200 seasons on both sides of town; a bunch of screwballs and one-year-wonders went coast-to-coast during the regular season and like Sherman through
    Georgia in the post.

It was thrilling. Here’s another chance for that experience. Don’t miss it.

Life’s too short and baseball’s too important to hold tribal grudges.

    Go Cubs.

  29. ===Reinsdorf snapped at me, saying Sox fans shouldn’t be so mean to Cub fans===

Agreed. I’m a big Cubs fan, but I was out cheering the Sox Motercade on South Ashland Ave when they all drove by…just sayin.

Comment by PublicServant Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 9:51 am

  30. Abstained, as a die hard Cub’s fan and resident of Chicago. I always root for the Sox as I root for any Chicago franchise as winning is good for the city. However, what is happening this year (or, hopefully, with this team in the next 5 years) is ours, and I couldn’t not care less about what others think about it. So, jump on board the bandwagon if you please, or silently cheer at home, or make a Kris Bryant voodoo doll and stick pins in it for all I care.

Like John Lackey said, we’re not here for a haircut. We’re here for jewelry.

Comment by AlfondgoGonz Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 9:55 am

  33. There is a pecking order in play-off fandom: your favorite team, your league team, your local team, and the team you choose to cheer for because you aren’t really interested in either one but it’s human nature to pick sides.

Comment by RIJ Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 9:56 am

  34. I have never understood the hate many Sox fans have for the Cubs. I am a Cubs fan and the only time I don’t cheer for the Sox is when they are playing the Cubs. Can’t we all just get along?! Go Cubs & Sox!

Comment by Fan Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 9:56 am

  35. Big bag of Nope.

I already have enough trouble with loud mouth Cubs fans…if they win anything? God Help Us All.

Comment by Dee Lay Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 9:57 am

  36. Yes…I rooted for the Sox then, after all.

I’m not a normal fan in a lot of ways. I get the positive aspects of rivalries but not the negative ones. I’m happy to root for the Sox and Cards when they’re not playing the Cubs. I suspect the notion of sports hatred to be what happens when you let the nastier aspects of tribalism that sports taps into go unchecked. And I have no patience for the weird toxicity that infests online commentary, especially in sports and other “macho” fields.

But as I said, I’m abnormal.

Comment by Threepwood Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 9:57 am

Heack, as a Cardinals fan by marriage, I’ve rooted for the Cards in 2011 (THAT hurt, I can tell you), 2012, 2013, and 2014. (Notably, I did *not* in 2015.)

JMSO, it’s a friendly rivalry, and I bear no ill will to my White Sox fandom friends. I only root against them when they play my favorite team.

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 10:16 am

  44. Have to disagree about the Cubs fans being “brutal” during the White Sox World Series. The north side bars especially around Wrigley were packed watching the games. I saw very few Astros band wagon jumpers.

Before that year there was very few fans walking around the North Side in their White Sox gear. They were everywhere in the playoffs and World Series. That continues today.

  45. I always root for Chicago. Always.
Of course, I’m not primarily a baseball guy (there aren’t 2 Chicago teams in my main sport).
I never really give any thought to the idea that it might some day be the Cubs v. the Sox in the Series.

  47. I’m not rooting for the Cubs, but I’m not rooting against them either. The whole Cubs phenomenon brings about nothing but apathy from me. Besides, my baseball interest leans to the American League. I’ll be following step-by-step to see who winds up winning the pennant, then will take a look over at the National League to see which team made it through to get crushed by the AL champs come World Series time. If it happens to be the Cubs, so be it. Or it could be someone else, for all I care.

True Cubs fans don’t hate the White Sox, we just ignore them. (Which they really hate.)

    Comment by JT11505 Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 11:03 am

  58. I agree that Cub fans are generally a bucket of deplorables. But I like Chicago baseball and I’m a Democrat. Just because the other side, in this case, the North Side, hasn’t the common decency to support which ever Chicago team is making a run.

In a perfect world, the Cubs would be playing the Sox in the World Series. Sure, it would be mayhem of biblical proportions. But I figure having every single vehicle in the entire Chicago Metropolitan Area turned onto its roof and set ablaze is a small price to pay for an all-Chicago Series. Besides, that’s why God made insurance!

Comment by Springfieldish Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 11:06 am

  59. I voted yes and think because it’s so momentous, yuge, not winning for over a century, Sox fans should cheer, or if not cheer, not be very resentful.

It will be one of the best sports stories in American history. Being bitter would tarnish such a great accomplishment.

Comment by Grandson of Man Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 11:07 am

  60. I’m a Cubs fan, but I didn’t vote. The way I see it, if your loyalty is to the city or state teams, then yes. If your loyalty is to the league, then no.

It’s not certain yet (10 games to go, and they are up by 5) but the Red Sox could end up in it also. That will be interesting since Mrs RNUG is a Boston fan.

Comment by RNUG Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 11:11 am

  61. I’m a longtime Cubs season ticket holder voting not just no, but hell no. Better to vent animosity through baseball than in places that really matter.

Comment by Southside Markie Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 11:12 am

  62. I recall being harshly criticized by an angry Sox fan for showing disrespect for the White Sox by wearing a “St. Louis Cardinals” cap to the Comiskey Park/the Cell.

I did not have an opportunity to fully explain to the man that the “St. Louis Browns” were a former American League charter franchise (relocated to Baltimore and renamed the Orioles) and that the colors of the Cardinals never included brown.

He must not have received the memo that caps of past teams are retro cool.

Either you actually support the other team, or you just want them to win already so you can quit hearing the expressions, “lovable losers” and “die hard Cub fans” ever again. And put Sam Sianis’ goat to rest. Enough already.

  70. I vote yes, I cheered the White Sox during their playoff run in 2005 and even celebrated their world series victory at the time. It was amazing to see a Chicago baseball team bring a world series to Chicago after almost 90 or so years at that point.

  77. ” If the Cubs win, it will be like 2005 never happened.”

Sad to say, too many Chicagoans, this championship is already forgotten. That is a pity. It is like the Sox are fast becoming a trivia question like the 1947 Chicago Cardinals.

The 2005 White Sox never got the mass adoration that was showered on the 1985 Bears, or the other successful teams like the recent Blackhawks or Bulls.

The Sox swept Houston in four straight. That was and is an exceptional feat.

My actual memory of baseball goes back to the mid fifties and it was common, in spite of most us being National League fans first and foremost, for us downstate summertime pony-leaguers to also follow an American League team and wouldn’t you know it - it was the ChiSox. It was that way through part of the sixties too until my high school ball days ended and we all parted.

Rich there’s more ChiSox fans down here than you think.

It’s been awhile, but there was a whole lotta love for that team, a huge parade and a rally that was celebrated by throngs. Bigger than the Bears (I attended both). Unfair though, since it was freezing cold during the Bear’s rally.

  80. I believe Chicago really needs a positive boost after this year of violence. I can see not cheering for the Cubs until (and if) they get to the World Series. If they make it to the Series I say yes, cheer for the Cubs, and for Chicago.

Comment by Grandson of Man Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 1:48 pm

  81. I said no, even though I’m a Cubs fan who cheered for the Sox in ‘05 (but I didn’t go to the parade–not my team, not my party). I’m happy anytime a Chicago sports team makes it to the postseason.

I don’t expect you to cheer for us, though you’re welcome to do so. All I ask is that you don’t actively root against us.

Comment by Tim Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 3:07 pm

  82. Lifelong Cardinals fan with lots of Cubs friends. I have always had sympathy for Cubs fans and said I wouldn’t mind them winning. That has changed now that they have become a powerhouse team. Their fans have been insufferable this year at the Cubs games I have attended. It is mostly the younger crowd who probably doesn’t buy into the superstition that the older fans adhere too. If the Cubs win this year, I have a feeling that fan base will be one of the most annoying in all of sports.

  88. No, but I will only privately cheer against them out of respect for my Cubs fan friends. As a lifelong Sox fan, the Cubs winning the World Series would mean my team becoming even more invisible to the rest of the country and many Chicagoans…many of whom never rooted for my Sox in 2005. To love the White Sox is to hate the Cubs, but the reverse is not true.
