Dold criticized for two fundraisers

Posted in:

* Greg Hinz

U.S. Rep. Bob Dold, R-Lincolnshire, has been running hard as a moderate’s moderate in his north suburban 10th District, not only emphasizing his support for gun control and gay rights groups, but underlining that he will not vote for Donald Trump for president.

But Dold has lined up another top Republican to star at his Oct. 5 fundraiser who in some ways is almost as divisive: Gov. Bruce Rauner.

According to an invitation that came my way, the “special guest” at a Glencoe reception and “private round table” is Rauner, whom some like and some hate but who has bitterly battled labor unions and Springfield Democrats most of the past two years. […]

“Raising money with the governor shows Republican Bob Dold’s true priorities lie with the extreme Rauner agenda of attacking labor and working families, cutting the social safety net and restricting access to voting rights,” says [Brad Schneider] spokesman Steven Kirsch.

* And while Dold has refused to endorse Trump, his scheduled appearance at a “Beat Hillary at the Distillery” fundraiser is raising some eyebrows. That name is a bit much.

From a press release…

Today, the Schneider for Congress campaign released a new online ad to shed light on Republican Congressman Bob Dold’s actions to pave the way for a Donald Trump presidency.

Despite his claims that he will not support Donald Trump, Dold recently headlined a local Republican party fundraiser titled “Beat Hillary at the Distillery.”

“Whatever he may say, Republican Bob Dold’s actions show he is raising money to defeat Hillary Clinton and thereby working to elect Donald Trump,” said Schneider for Congress spokesman Steven Kirsch. “This is the same political double-talk Bob Dold use to block the gun safety legislation he claims to back and to introduce legislation to defund Planned Parenthood clinics while claiming he supports women’s health.”

The organizations hosting the event – The Lake County Republican Central Committee, The Lake County Republican Federation, and The Women’s Republican Club of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff – list their support of Donald Trump for President on their websites.

* Transcript…

They say character is who you are when nobody is watching.

To the public, Bob Dold says one thing…

“I will not support Donald Trump”

But behind closed doors, Bob Dold recently headlined a fundraiser to help elect Donald Trump

Working to beat Hillary Clinton and put Trump in the White House

The same Donald Trump that says…

“Putting a wife to work is a very dangerous thing”

“…They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, they’re rapists”

“Uhhh, I don’t know what I said. I don’t remember”

No wonder Bob Dold won’t condemn Trump’s worst comments…

…he’s secretly trying to elect him.

What else is Bob Dold trying to hide?

  1. Production values on that ad are awful.

    Comment by so... Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 2:49 pm

  2. Heh. The ad is OK, but would be noticeably improved if they used a professional narrator and not one of the office interns.

  3. Did Schneider recently hire the Duckworth press flacks?

    Comment by Louis G. Atsaves Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 3:04 pm

  4. Dold wants to “beat Hillary at the distillery” with whom? Jack Daniels?

    Trump is the only one who can beat her. Ergo, Dold is supporting Trump, QED.

  5. Weird. This ad might even help Dold. “Beat Hillary” isn’t a terrible theme for him, even if he’s not a Trump supporter.

    As for Rauner showing at a funder in Glencoe? It’s his neighborhood there and he’s generally liked by the folks who would attend a funder like this one.

    This ad is mating some odd socks. The folks up there are a pretty savvy lot. Don’t see much help for Schneider with this one.

  6. ===Don’t see much===

    On that, we agree.

    Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 3:13 pm

  7. Bruce Rauner supports Donald Trump for President of the United States.

    It’s not up for discussion or debate. Rauner supports Trump.

    Dold? Welp, those funders and the “beat Hillary” thingy… hmm… Who is the only candidate that possibly beat Hillary… You know, realistically?

    Why be cute with funder names?

    Amateurish.

  8. Schneider’s folks desperately grasping at straws here. It’s like the classic rule that if you don’t say “endorse” it’s not really an endorsement. This is an event benefitting the Lake Co. GOP for GOTV…not Trump, not the RNC, etc. They might have an argument if Illinois were a battleground, but it ain’t. What a waste of time.

    (And by dragging some staffer/intern into do the VO, they’re admitting they know this is dumb)

  9. =“Beat Hillary” isn’t a terrible theme for him, even if he’s not a Trump supporter.=

    So explain to me how Dold can have a “Beat Hillary” theme and not be a Trump supporter. Unless he recently came out in support of Gary Johnson and I missed that.

    Dold has the same problem that all down ticket Republicans face. He wants Trump supporters but he doesn’t want Trump.

    Comment by pundent Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 3:27 pm

  10. Pundent, Gary Johnson can’t beat Hillary, only Trump can.

    Whoever thought the construction “I want to beat Hillary, but I don’t support Trump” was clever…. it’s just sad to see grown-ups so weak and cowardly, yet believe they should be among the state’s and nation’s leaders.

    Not a lot of backbone.

  11. ==Dold has the same problem that all down ticket Republicans face===

    Pund, seriously…it’s not a problem for ALL down ticket Republicans. In fact, it’s a real help to a number of them. I concede, not Dold. But “Beat Hillary” however cowardly (won’t argue with WS on that) works fine with the Hard GOP in Dold’s neighborhood.

  12. 47, do you see this helping Schneider? If so, explain. Otherwise you’re taking up space.

    Comment by A guy Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 3:53 pm

  13. Man talk about desperate…

    Comment by Clark Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 3:59 pm

  14. Am I the only one who thinks the term “Beat Hillary” ought to be rephrased?

    “Defeat Hillary” is much better and avoids the mental image of physical abuse. I’m giving folks here the benefit of the doubt, but let’s be careful about how we talk about this stuff.

    Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Sep 22, 16 @ 4:00 pm

  15. Wonder what BigBrain will do at the Dold doin’,he cause he ain’t doin’ electioneerin’ and his not involved in those campaigns….very confusin’

  18. Bob Dold says he won’t support Trump, but he will support Paul Ryan and his extremist agenda.

  19. **Weird. This ad might even help Dold. “Beat Hillary” isn’t a terrible theme for him, even if he’s not a Trump supporter.**

    Hillary will win the 10th easily.

  20. Easily? Don’t think so.

    Comment by A guy Friday, Sep 23, 16 @ 9:07 am

  21. Huh, I would think the use of a word “Beat” being associated with a female candidate would’ve garnered criticism for making light of violence against women. Especially given the very misogynistic rhetoric coming from Trump followers.
