Rauner finally speaks out against Trump, but won’t say if he still supports him

Posted in:

* AP

Republican Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner has largely avoided any discussion of the presidential candidacy of Donald Trump.

That changed Monday, when Rauner directed harsh criticism at Trump for the vulgar remarks captured in a 2005 video, although he didn’t mention Trump’s name.

Speaking after participating in Chicago’s Columbus Day parade, Rauner said the rhetoric, the language, the statements in the video was, “disgusting, appalling, outrageous, beyond any reasonable bounds of decency.” He reiterated his refusal to back Trump.

* Sun-Times

When asked whether he supports Trump, Rauner said instead that he’s “not endorsing him.”

Rauner, as head of the Illinois Republican Party, didn’t attend this year’s GOP convention and has not endorsed Trump, but he has said he would vote for the Republican nominee. […]

At an event Downstate Saturday, Rauner said, “I’ll say this. The rhetoric in this presidential campaign [is] appalling, disgusting. As a father [and] as a husband, the language is vile and repulsive, and I condemn it in the strongest possible way.”

Asked if he’ll still support Trump, Rauner replied on Saturday, “I’ve made my comments.”

* Tribune

Rauner’s handpicked state GOP chairman, Cook County Commissioner Tim Schneider, has not issued a formal public statement about Trump’s leaked comments. Email requests to the Illinois GOP for comment since Saturday gained no response. […]

All politics may be local, but timing also can be a factor. The Sangamon County Republican Party sent fliers to mailboxes in Springfield on Saturday soliciting vote-by-mail for the GOP ticket, political literature that featured Trump.

But the mailer, arriving only hours after the release of Trump’s recording, also had photos of Sen. Kirk and Rep. Davis, who by then had called for Trump to drop out.

  2. Were the General Assembly candidates on the reverse side? Hard to imagine Sangamon GOP sending out a mailer without Wojcicki Jimenez on it.

  3. I’m sure Artl is pleased with that mailer.

I don’t recall Munger giving any type of opinion on Trump, good, bad, or in between.

    Here’s the thing…

Rauner doesn’t have to worry about HIS face on this. Capiche? Rauner gets to appease the Trumpsters… without Rauner adding his mug on the mailer.

It’s actually Raunerite genius. I’m not even kidding.

Rauner gets to parse all he wants, and when it mattered, now… Rauner ain’t runnin’, but Rauner is runnin’ away from Trump with a wink and a photoshop.

If it were me, I’d be a wee bit… “disappointed”… I was used for cover for Rauner, but Rauner, and the Democrat that is Diana Rauner, and that Wisconsinite Richard Uihlein… and our French 11th century palace renter Ken Griffin… They keep dropping “millions”

    We’ve all heard it, pick a topic…

    “I donated millions…”

We know, Gov. Rauner. And for that, the bus Munger and Kirk, and any and all get their faces next to Trump… but you don’t…

… and all that money… bought a very nice buffer.

Oh, and Governor… until you renounce your own words about supporting “every” Republican for federal office, you will continue to own Trump… That’s how it works… but when you have mailings like this… you already know that… so… That’s why this is complete genius… for Gov. Rauner.

  4. Governor Rauner endorsed Donald Trump for President. He supports him. This statement is as spineless as the Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan.

Reporters need to ask the Governor today how he treats women and minorities. Might be a Sandack in his closet.

The citizens of Illinois need to know.

  6. These verbal gymnastics are pathetic. Got a banana for a backbone.

The governor said at the state GOP convention that the goal was to beat Hillary Clinton. That’s a Trump endorsement.

His hand-picked GOP chairman said the party is in “lock-step” with Trump.

  8. ===The Sangamon County Republican Party sent fliers to mailboxes in Springfield on Saturday soliciting vote-by-mail for the GOP ticket, political literature that featured Trump===

Ignoring that the mailer was probably ordered and printed weeks ago, I have somewhat always assumed that county party officials in Illinois are supposed to be tone deaf. Total or apparent loyalty tends to be the priority.

Some folks still think they’ll lose their jobs if they aren’t.

  9. So, about this “I’ll take the slings and arrows” thing.

Rauner needs now to go the distance and take a definitive stance. I assume he’ll vote for trump, despite the misogynistic, violent, xenophobic, and sexist comments made by Trump.

And I assume Rauner’s silence is an affirmation that, yes, I’ll vote for him — but I can’t say that I’ll vote for him because that will doom my *political* future.

What’s disturbing — and what a statesman (as opposed to a political hack) — would realize is that Trump’s rhetroric is — and has been for some time — beyond simply the “political”. It’s about human decency and a respect for the Presidency. If Rauner can’t articulate that, then he’s on the same path as trump. Vague, impotent, hacky, and essentially a rich guy trying to forever game the system.

I’ll give you a hand, try the Illinois State GOP Convevtion.

Also, use the google. Rauner has said, and I may have the quote off, maybe there’s Ad out there that has it, but..,

    “I support the Republican Nominee”

    Is there another Republican nominee?

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Oct 11, 16 @ 9:03 am

  11. Now “endorse”… if you’re supporting the Republican nominee…

How can you support the Republican nominee and not endorse the Republican nominee?

    Please explain those gymnastics

  15. • Bruce Rauner said, “I will support the Republican Party’s nominee for president. I’ll do everything I can to work with that nominee.”

    • And Donald Trump is the Republican Party’s nominee for president.

    • Therefore, until Rauner makes a statement affirmatively renouncing Trump’s candidacy, it is perfectly legitimate to apply the Transitive Property of Equality to Rauner’s statement of support, i.e. Bruce Rauner will support Donald Trump and will do everything he can to work with Donald Trump.

    It’s basic logic.

  17. Thanks all. I was unaware he said that. It does sound as if he said that BEFORE he knew who the nominee was. Said it he did however. Appreciate the info, little tired this AM from staying up for the Cubs game.

  18. ===It does sound as if he said that BEFORE he knew who the nominee was.===

Use a calendar, use the Google, reconcile Rauner has said this numerous times AFTER Trump was the Nominee.

    We’ll wait…

  19. “never have an impure thought or utter an unkind statement regarding sex, race, religion or gender.”

No politician, including Donald Trump, has ever been held to that standard.

The standard that Trump has repeatedly failed to meet is basic human decency.

  22. While I’m sure we have all heard and seen things similar to Trump’s comments, and we’ve all known men who were aggressive hounds, we all also know, and some of us are, decent men who do not talk or think as Donald Trump does. Don’t we want our elected officials, our representatives, to be the best of us, to represent the best in us?

  23. Trump and Rauner are joined at the hip - MM

Best surgeons in the world can’t separate these twins.

Rauner supports Trump…until he flips to not supporting his nominee.

    Rock meet hardplace.

  24. There is no doubt in my mind that Rauner is giving Trump money for his campaign. They both want to de-regulate all the laws that protect our air, water and our land, etc.. They are both in it to benefit themselves.
