Rate the new anti-Dold TV ad

* Press release…

Today, House Majority PAC launched its first ad in the race for Illinois’ 10th Congressional District, “Advisor.” The ad features a Highland Park voter reviewing the facts online about Republican Congressman Bob Dold’s out-of-touch record including his votes to privatize Medicare and charge women more for health care.

“Advisor” can be viewed online here.

Additionally, HMP has launched a new, real-life version of the website featured in the ad, www.congressadvisor.org, where voters can read the facts about Dold’s out-of-touch record for themselves.

“Unfortunately for Congressman Dold, his record is due for a big review this November, and it doesn’t look good,” said House Majority PAC Communications Director Jeb Fain. “Dold may get high marks from his special interest backers in Washington for voting to privatize Medicare and charge women more for health care, but IL-10 voters can tell from the facts that Bob Dold clearly isn’t working for them.”

“Advisor” begins airing today on broadcast, cable, and digital platforms in the Chicago media market.

* The ad

* Script…

Before I hire someone, I check online.
Bob Dold has a lot of reviews… but his ratings aren’t good.
Special interests spent $7 million to elect Dold and he repeatedly voted their way.
Like taking half a million from the insurance industry and voting to privatize Medicare.
And charging women more for health care.
Read for yourself. Bob Dold does not work for us.

  1. Give it an A-. I think it’s well done, a fair hit, and targets the demographic he needs during E-day.

  2. I’d say A-. Dold needs to explain his actual record. You can’t win this district with nothing but grandstanding and photo ops.

  4. I think it’s a well done, clever ad. However, I would have chosen a more middle-of-the-road town for the actress to stem from. I don’t know if choosing Highland Park, one of the the richest towns in the district, speaks to the rest of the district. A town like Libertyville — more in the middle of the socio-economics of the district — would maybe work better.

  6. A but if I lived there, it would still be hard to vote for Brad Schneider. there’s just something off-putting about him.

  7. Unless they’re exceptionally well-done, I’m not big on actors playing “real people” in political spots.

    This is nothing special.

    There are plenty of “real people” out there. Their rough edges and non-actor delivery add credibility to political spots.

  8. Interesting ad. Especially interesting because of the use of “Betsy” a self proclaimed north shore Highland Park resident with a beautiful home and yard. Huh. (Because I thought we had already established here that voters don’t like to see snobby rich people in ads cuz, you know, voters can’t relate since they’re “not like us”.)

    Yes. I’m being catty. But seriously, I am having a tough time rating this ad on content or effect. These are not issues that I hear discussed around the highways and byways of the 10th District. Perhaps the PAC has access to polling data that says otherwise. Or perhaps they are just wasting their money on a generic-type House ad.

  9. A-/B+. This could help Schneider hold on to the North Shore voters who might cross over to Dold. The demo isn’t big on over-the-top attack ads and this is about as hard as you can get without being nasty.

    Comment by Anon Tuesday, Oct 11, 16 @ 12:23 pm

  10. It’s a decent ad. I’d give it a B+. Agree with Responsa that those ghastly, Rob Schneider rug ads from a few years ago didn’t hit the mark but those were more generic.
    This one seems a bit more palatable than the rug ads. These voters do live in/around Highland Park so why not name it.

    According to Dold’s other ad, his primary accomplishments are keeping the NRA in check and not voting against a woman’s right to choose. While topical, they are not a big deal this year.

    I’d like to have Schneider back in office just to keep the rivalry going for a few more years.

  11. It’s effective because directly refutes Dold’s claim to be bi-partisan. The points seriously concern voters, affluent and not.

    Comment by JackD Tuesday, Oct 11, 16 @ 12:29 pm

  12. == refutes Dold’s claim to be bi-partisan.==

    I think most voters who value independence (as do much of the 10th District) view “bi-partisan” as meaning that even though their congress person is a nominal D or R, sometimes that office holder makes the conscious and tough choice to vote against the party’s leadership when he or she believes it is the right thing to do and it best represents the entire constituency. Dold has done this independent style bi-partisan thing on a number of voting occasions. It is very difficult, however, to find even one situation when Schneider was previously in congress where he cast any vote that was not firmly pure partisan D party line.

    Can you name one time when Dold’s “tough” vote made the difference? Let’s be real here, each instance was when the result his party wanted was never in doubt.

    Comment by Anon Tuesday, Oct 11, 16 @ 1:07 pm

  14. Anon– You can attempt to change the discussion goal post here when you can name ANY across- the- aisle vote Brad has EVER taken to in order to show some independence. Thank you.

    Comment by Responsa Tuesday, Oct 11, 16 @ 1:18 pm

  15. @Anon

    So his vote only counts as tough if he’s the 218th vote? That’s a pretty small needle to thread.

    As a singular ad, it’s not great. The fake ratings website is pretty silly. This is another carpet ad redux, which was cute the first time around, but got really tiresome in the last round.

    Is it just me or does Schneider appear to be mailing it in? I have yet to see an ad that he actually speaks; just the one where he photoshopped himself with Pres. Obama, VP Biden, Sen. Warren, and Hillary. Meanwhile, Dold has several where he speaks directly to the audience. If I was in this district, I’d rather vote for the guy who isn’t afraid to be on camera.

    Comment by ChrisB Tuesday, Oct 11, 16 @ 1:25 pm

  16. @Responsa @ChrisB What makes it “tough” if there’s no consequence to his vote? What is “independent” about giving a speech on guns without voting on it because his choice of Speaker won’t let it on the Floor? I agree about the carpet ad but this one seems way better–no annoying couple.

    Comment by Anon Tuesday, Oct 11, 16 @ 1:36 pm

  17. The ad cuts against his bipartisan claims because it goes to issues on which real bipartisanship, given the concerns of his electorate, Republican and Democrat, would have him going the other way. Those positions are rock ribbed right wing positions. Most of his constituents don’t want to privatize Medicare or increase costs for women.

    Comment by JackD Tuesday, Oct 11, 16 @ 1:40 pm

  18. It’s a blah pass. Not compelling to make you watch it all. Even drags a bit. Other ads have gotten us used to a more rapid pace. The audio bed pace moves, but the audio text lags. From her first sentence with the airy attitude to the next segment, where she gets more critical, it’s a little weird, like a bit of a Sybil syndrome.

    It says what they want it to, but lacks some style points and pace to me.

    He’s definitely on the milk carton, but I’m not sure that’s mailing it in. Maybe the internals show that’s the way to go. Like Kirk, let Dold keep explaining why he’s not “that kind” of Republican.

  20. Great Ad and I rate it an A.. For all of those complaining about the location of the Ad. The location chosen is the same location where Bruce Rauner is from so it’s effective advertising. BTW real people could care less about the location of the actor in the Ad. Most of them probably don’t even know anything about Highland Park.

  21. –BTW real people could care less about the location of the actor in the Ad. Most of them probably don’t even know anything about Highland Park.–

    Most “real people” in the 10th Congressional District don’t know anything about Highland Park? Quite a compliment you’re paying them there, if being completely ignorant to your surroundings is a compliment.

    The producers of the spot specifically called out Highland Park because their target audience doesn’t know anything about it? Why would they do that?

    That makes sense to you?

  22. Mal–this blog erupted with the meet Munger ad that had her seated on a sofa in her very own home in Lincolnshire with her family and her dog beside her. It was all “Too rich!” “Too well dressed!”, “Regular Joe voters won’t be able to relate!”.

    Now here’s “Betsy” in Highland Park. LOL. Some of us are just looking for a little non-hypocritical consistency in reviewing ads.

  23. C
    Way too cutesy & cheesey. Also, so the “raised Women’s healthcare cost” accusation is so vague it’s easily dismissed by the viewer.
