Republicans play “follow the Rauner” on Trump

Posted in:

* Tony Arnold attended a candidates’ forum at the Glenbard South High School library and reports that one theme was consistent throughout the DuPage County event: Republican candidates don’t want to talk about Donald Trump

Incumbent State Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, didn’t seem eager to talk about Trump.

“I have not gotten involved in this presidential election,” Breen told the crowd. “I’ve really stuck to more of my local races. I usually only endorse when I can make a difference in the race and when I know the folks.”

The question also came up in the state senate race in DuPage County, in which Republican Seth Lewis is challenging incumbent State Sen. Tom Cullerton, D-Villa Park. Lewis had a similar answer to Breen.

“I believe our state problems are far different than our national problems, so I’m just going to refrain and say I’m focused on Illinois and becoming our next elected state senator here in Illinois,” Lewis said.

President Obama won DuPage in 2008 and 2012, and Trump likely isn’t going to outperform the two previous candidates. But because Trump’s been doing his best Charlie Sheen impersonation lately, candidates are asked about the top of the ticket far more than they were during the last two cycles.

And, as Tony points out, it’s not an easy question for GOP incumbents and candidates (and the governor) because some of Trump’s fiercest supporters could turn against anybody on the ballot who won’t get in line and because some Republicans just don’t like the man.

  2. Well sure. If they don’t mimic Rauner’s spinelessness on Trump they might not get their piece of Rauner’s ill gotten booty.

The GOP in this state is beyond embarrassing. And then they wonder why this state is never in play in a presidential election.

  4. Tough call for DuPage County folks. All will tell come Nov 8 if that is a good strategy.

  5. All the Illinois Dems are following Madigan when it comes to corruption. Any sitting Dem legislator willing to call out Mautino? Any? I give Republicans credit for distancing themselves from Trump. Shows they stand by their beliefs and not just blindly following party marching orders. Too bad Democrats like Kifowit, Mussman, Yingling, Cassidy, Conroy, Hurley, Manley and Rita refuse to take a stand for ethics in government and instead turn a blind eye to corruption because their party boss says that’s what they are to do. Ethics cast aside at the request of party leadership. If this were not true what excuse do they have for not taking a stand against corruption??

  6. Trump has always been on his own. Unwelcome by most Republicans. Voters know this. Democrats are wasting their time trying to tie Trump to GOP incumbent. Polls repeatedly show the attempt to do so fails.

Trump isn’t as toxic as reported. Spend money elsewhere for better effect.

  7. Seems to me those guys handled it pretty well. They’ve got their own races to focus on. The top of the ticket really is an outlier in DuPage. There’s a much more active State of Illinois focus in these precincts.

Governor Bruce Rauner supports Donald Trump for President of the United States.

That’s not up for debate or discussion… No distance there.

  9. >Republicans play “follow the Rauner”

“Follow the Rauner” is no game for Illinois Republicans–it’s a life and death requirement. Political life and death, to be specific.

  10. I lived in DuPage County back in the late 60s and early 70s. The joke back then was that the Democrats could hold their county convention in a phone booth. So I’m still having a hard time believing that Obama carried DuPage in ‘08 and ‘12. It’s just so bizarre to me.

The Republican not wanting to talk about Trump is ‘not’ distancing themselves. It means Trump is an embarrassment to the Republican party.

  12. I live in Michelle Mussman’s district and she is very visible and walks the neighborhoods often. She listens and discusses the issues that are important to her residents. We disagree occasionally on issues, but she always explains her position to me. These are important attributes that I look for in an elected official.

Because they abandon a man who can hurt their chances of winning? Let’s see one of them besides McCann stand up to the Governor. There is only one party in the Illinois statehouse that blindly follows orders.

Yes, it’s a real Profiles in Courage to pretend you don’t know the name of the guy polling 25% in the suburbs.
