Bradley’s Madigan nominating speech used against him

Posted in:

* A harsh new Republican TV ad uses video footage of Rep. John Bradley (D-Marion) seconding the nomination of Michael Madigan for another term as House Speaker. The ad calls Bradley a “loyal lapdog” for Madigan. Watch it

Keep in mind the context here. Not only is Madigan very unpopular, but the Republicans have spent millions of dollars driving that unpopularity home with voters.

  1. You mean the campaign Republican State Chairman Pat Brady started is bearing fruit?

  2. If this is using footage from a GA proceeding isn’t that illegal?

Tried to look this up and found Quinn got slammed for using GA footage for an ad in 2010.

  3. Strange that Bradley gave his opponents that club. A nominating speech from him was hardly necessary.

  4. That speech is pre ooda loops days

  5. What’s the origin of the video? Most floor debates are not permitted to be used for political purposes….

  6. That was at UIS- not House. And I believe DCCC used Bost’s rant in 14.

Comment by ouch Wednesday, Oct 19, 16 @ 9:57 am

  7. Wow. Nothing is more damaging than using one’s own words against one’s self. As we saw with the Mendoa ad against Munger, the words used by Comptroller Munger are equally as damaging as anything else.

What makes this effective - in my humble opinion - is that Bradley is not just “some guy”. He is an Assistant Majority Leader and Madigan’s budget point person. The leap is not so high/hard as it is with others. Word is right - not sure why Bradley would do that. I would bet the GOP are looking at Mendoza’s speeches as well. Right before she was elected City Clerk she made a nomination speech on Madigan’s behalf.

Comment by Team Sleep Wednesday, Oct 19, 16 @ 10:01 am

  8. Ouch - you are correct. DCCC ran ads with the “LET MY PEOPLE GO!” rant to question his temperament.

Comment by Team Sleep Wednesday, Oct 19, 16 @ 10:02 am

  9. Smart ad. Getting a candidate in their own words on tape is always powerful.

  11. The clips do not match the text of his seconding remarks on the first day of this General Assembly from 1/2015. So he must have made similar remarks more than once.

It was an official meeting of the House. The Bost commercial used footage from TV cameras and bluestream. This doesn’t appear to be from one of those sources.

Comment by interesting Wednesday, Oct 19, 16 @ 10:08 am

  15. Interesting - correct but UIS also has a public access channel and Illinois Channel broadcasts a lot of that as well. Bluestream has been covering this stuff for a while and they may have aired or taped this as well.

Comment by Team Sleep Wednesday, Oct 19, 16 @ 10:21 am

  16. Where is this commercial supposed to be set, in a junkyard? The pile of ancient, flickering tubes is bizarre and very distracting to the ad’s message.

Or maybe the Chicago geniuses who bankrolled and made the spot think people in Southern Illinois don’t have modern technology?

  19. “His (Madigan’s) character has ALWAYS prevailed.”

That’s a very absolute statement to walk back. Either you agree with those words, or you don’t.

  20. Too bad Rauner slops in the mud like a dog,
Too bad people cant equate good relationships and leadersship with getting things done for S IL.
Too bad it’s always about Madigan.

  21. uncharted waters here- I also can’t remember a time when a Governor had negative attack ads run against him when he wasn’t up for election…

    Comment by Boone's is Back Wednesday, Oct 19, 16 @ 10:35 am

  22. Perhaps he should just say he’s not focused on politics, he has not endorsed anyone for House Speaker, and he is focusing on making Illinois better.

  23. –Perhaps he should just say he’s not focused on politics, he has not endorsed anyone for House Speaker, and he is focusing on making Illinois better.–

With a straight face after personally nominating the guy multiple times? I hope he’s focused on politics, he has an election in less than 3 weeks.

Comment by Ron Burgundy Wednesday, Oct 19, 16 @ 11:27 am

  24. That is effective … unlikely Bradley.

Comment by Deft Wing Wednesday, Oct 19, 16 @ 11:57 am

  25. What!?! He shipped the jobs to Chicago instead of China. What kind of loose cannon is this guy? ;)

Comment by James Knell Wednesday, Oct 19, 16 @ 12:09 pm

  26. To those saying Bradley should be commended and not riduculoled for making relationships with the Speaker, I would just point that politics is not a fair game, and those who think it is will lose.

Madigan is not known for playing fairly and has ruined people’s lives and reputations to win an election.

Comment by Not It Wednesday, Oct 19, 16 @ 12:29 pm

  27. I live in Bradley’s district. The only thing more unpopular than Madigan is Rauner. The district is majority Dem and very unionized. Bradley needs to remind constituents that a vote for his opponent is a vote for ending prevailing wage and collective bargaining.

Provide examples of peoples lives and reputations ruined by Madigan.

    I am curious!

You really think the 117 is not a Democratic district? Sure for president, at least since WBush, has trended GOP, but Franklin Co. is one of the most Democratic counties in the entire state.

    Comment by Southern Dawg1 Wednesday, Oct 19, 16 @ 1:48 pm

  33. Dawg - take a look at the 2014 results. Franklin County gave Rauner nearly twice as many votes as Quinn and Mike Bost mopped the floor with Bill Enyart. Williamson County was even worse for the Dems.

Comment by Team Sleep Wednesday, Oct 19, 16 @ 1:52 pm

  34. Good point Team Sleep…guess Southern Illinois isn’t as blue as it once was.
