“How about, let’s have a wager on the World Series?” Rauner said in front of Wrigley Field, standing next to Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts.
“If the Cleveland Indians are victorious, I’ll bet you I’ll deliver to you an extra-large Chicago-style deep dish pizza and a case of terrific Chicago-brewed microbrew beer,” Rauner said.
Rauner joked that Kasich will never get that food.
“You’re not going to get that delicious food and beer,” Rauner said. “We’re going to eat it here. Because you know what? The Cubs are going to win.”
Kasich posted his own bet on Facebook, saying he’d send Rauner “fan favorites from Cleveland” if the Indians lose.
Kinda lame, but any time that Rauner can get into a news story with a national figure who isn’t Donald Trump is a good day.
* Meanwhile…
U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-Cubs) and Sherrod Brown (D-Indians) made a bet today on the outcome of the 2016 World Series between the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians. If the Cubs win, Brown will bring beer from Cleveland’s Platform Brewing Company to Durbin’s office. If the Indians prevail, Durbin will deliver beer from Chicago’s Goose Island Brewery to Brown’s office.
Really? With all the great Chicago microbreweries out there Durbin picks an InBev beer?

An appropriate beer choice from Lake Erie Brewing might be “Elliot Ness” since the man had ties to both Chicago and Cleveland.

Goose Island beers made in Chicago are still some of the best beers in the country. If he’s bringing 312, which is generally brewed in NY, then we’ll have a problem

Sherrod is obviously a craft beer guy. Pipeworks, Revolution, Half Acre, Moody Tongue, Lake Effect and so many others. Or just bring Sherrod over to Piece lunch, and we’ll keep him.

To the Goose Island issue, I used to be solidly in the anti-macrobrew crowd, and would disdain anything made by the big guys. My neighbor, who is a beer rep, explained why it’s not necessarily a bad thing to “sell out.”
His reasoning is this: the craft brewers want to make beer. They don’t want to run a business. Any time devoted to managing the business takes time away from making beer. So they sell to InBev or MillerCoors to manage the day to day stuff, like supply chain management, distributorship, etc., and the brewers get to go back to making beer. Goose Island was actually the example he used. Now the GI guys can let InBev make the wildly popular 312, while they get to go back and make smaller, more interesting stuff.
Makes sense to me. It’s the same reason why most tech companies want to sell themselves to Google.

For those who like your craft brews, you can thank the Great Deregulator, Jimmy Carter, who legalized the home brews that led directly to microbrews.
At the time, there were 44 breweries in the U.S. Now there are 1,500.

The way Rauner clumsily phrased the bet, there is a question as to whether he is betting on the World Series, or betting on whether he’ll deliver deep dish pizza to Kasich in the million-to-one chance the Cubs lose.

My guess is that Rauner will refuse to pay if the Indians lose because it’s illegal to gamble in Illinois and any contract, etc, is void if it is based upon the wager.
