* David Giuliani is doing his best to keep up with the constant falsehoods landing in 76th House District mailboxes…
In the GOP’s mind, Rep. Andy Skoog should join his fellow Democrat, Hillary Clinton, behind bars.
The party’s latest mailer depicts a smiling Skoog in a police lineup in white shirt and loosened tie. The beefy arms of fellow “bad guys” appear on either side of Skoog, with one guy’s arm heavily tattooed.
Skoog is holding a sign that reads, “$6,000/year property tax scam.” The flier implores voters to retire “crooked politician” Skoog on Election Day, calling him a tax dodger.
Over the top? Of course, it is.
Just like plenty of other political fliers in mailboxes these days.

* Giuliani should keep up the good work. Few reporters ever bother confronting the blatant lies that are constantly churned out in legislative races because they either fall below the local media’s radar or they’re just so many of them that nobody wants to bother with the Herculean task of fact checking the avalanche.
In the end, however, it’s all just too much. Both sides have created alternate reality universes. Almost nothing they say has more than a tiny grain of truth, but their messaging has a much longer and deeper reach than any newspaper or Twitter account. Hence, the title of this post.
The only way these sorts of attacks will end is if they stop working. But since both sides do it, how could we ever tell?

I think we need to change the game. Go to 3 member districts for the Senate and House with cumulative voting. Go to a wide open primary with the top 5 vote getters going on to the general election. To win in those contests one must be FOR something.

The Donkey And The Elephant

The moral of my fable is: Help others.
My fable is:
There was a donkey and an elephant. They were not the best of friends.
One day a hunter set a trap…an elephant trap. So the donkey came along and walked over the elephant trap. He realized the ground felt a bit loose. He decided to wait and tell the elephant.
Sure enough, the elephant came and almost walked over the trap, but the donkey stopped him.
Then the elephant said, “You saved my life.” The donkey said, “It’s nothing.”
A week later a different hunter set a trap…a donkey trap. The donkey walked over the trap and yelled “Help I’m falling!”
But sure enough the elephant raced over and while the donkey was about to hit the ground… he stopped.
The elephant caught him and pulled him out. The donkey said, “You saved my life.” Then the elephant said, “It’s nothing.”

Fact checking is a lost art when it comes to campaign flyers. Simply an implication of a bad judgement vote or a seemingly inappropriate comment often times does appear in campaign literature.
Much of what I hear about is unquestionably, over the top and of questionable veracity.
I guess I am one of only a small portion of the Illinois electorate who has not received a single political flyer yet this year, so I only know what friends in other areas tell or show me that they have been subject to in their daily mail.
At times the opposition research can be valid and should be a part of the dialogue, but, I admit, both sides are guilty of belittling the intelligence of the Illinois voters and undermining the credibility of the candidates they support.
This does little to promote civil discussion of the quality of candidates who chose to submit themselves to the whims of the millionaires/PACS/Party Entities who are controlling the monies and advertising involved in these races.

And what about the state senate race out there? Nobody seems to be fact checking the reality that Rezin is trying to tell the voters her 1.4 million dollar house in S. Carolina is a “vacation home” and that she “has no plans” to step down after this race. Just another Republican baton hand off, same as she came in. Does LaSalle County ever get to actually elect its representatives?
