Madigan says “we’ll reschedule” leaders meeting

Posted in:

* Interesting…

Ran into Speaker Madigan at the capitol. He declined to say what he'll be doing at 1 p.m. instead of meeting w/ Gov Rauner. 'We'll resked.'

— Amanda Vinicky (@AmandaVinicky) November 14, 2016

He’s at the Statehouse, the other leaders are meeting at one o’clock, but he has a scheduling conflict. Hmm.

* From a top Rauner administration official…

The Speaker’s arrival in the Capitol is a hopeful sign that the Democratic leaders have reconsidered their decision to boycott today’s four leaders meeting. We will hold the meeting at 1pm remaining hopeful they will attend.

Gov. Rod Blagojevich called Speaker Madigan on election night in 2006. He never heard back. And by “never,” I mean Madigan didn’t call him back for over two years.

But if Madigan says he’ll reschedule we should take him at his word. Let’s hope he doesn’t put off a meeting until 2019, however.

* Either way, you can watch the leaders come and go today on BlueRoomStream by clicking here. I’ll probably do a ScribbleLive thingy on another post at the appropriate time.

  1. Subtle. But a glimmer.

  2. Madigan is getting pounded here. In sum, Rauner is defining Madigan as an obstructionist, THE biggest problem with Illinois.

This does not worry Madigan at all. But it sure worries Madigan’s caucus.

  3. If Madigan doesn’t show up now, his tone-deafness should alarm wavering Democrats. Another PR misstep by a guy who is literally costing his Party seats. His actions may have worked for decades, but he’s now up against the savviest politically team he’s ever faced and one with the deepest pockets too.

  4. What could MJM possibly be doing at 1 p.m. that’s more important than a leadership meeting, particularly since he’s already at the Capitol? He probably just wants to puff his chest a little bit and force a reschedule.

  5. What time does the Speaker eat his apple?

  6. Rauner forgot to check Madigan’s availability in Outlook before announcing the time.

  7. Seems like ‘What is Madigan doing at 1 PM’ would be a good QOTD

  8. I think this story is relevant for those who say the Speaker shouldn’t be expected to work with Rauner after Rauner made the Speaker look so bad:

Ages ago I was talking to a Member on the Floor who had just lost their election in a pretty brutal fight where DPI made the Member look like an out of touch idiot in their hometown. The Member was down in the dumps, and clearly just wanted to go home and forget about it all. Up the hallway walks the Speaker, who approached the Member, shook their hand, and very politely says, “I wish you all the best, it wasn’t personal. Good luck.”

The Member was in shock, shook the Speakers hand and said thank you, and the Speaker walked away.

If anyone should know it isn’t personal, it’s the Speaker.

  9. It’s not a boycott. The governor publically, rather than directly, called for a meeting. The Dems said the time didn’t work, let’s reschedule. If they want a meeting, they can get one. But it’s clear from the governor’s response that he’d rather have an argument. Maybe that’s all he understands.

  10. You people need to calm down before jumping the gun. Madigan called for a reschudle. You guys sure do give this fake governor the time and the day.

  12. Reschedule*

Comment by Mal Monday, Nov 14, 16 @ 12:14 pm

  13. MJM will reschedule. There will be a meeting. This was just a little reminder of whose terms we are on. Madigan sets the meeting times, not Rauner.

Comment by Consideration Monday, Nov 14, 16 @ 12:14 pm

  14. Rauner spent tens of millions demonizing Madigan. Maybe he should spend tens of millions more presenting a balanced budget with 60/40 votes to be considered in January.
    Otherwise, why meet?

Comment by Winnin' Monday, Nov 14, 16 @ 12:16 pm

  15. Madigan could run some NO BUDGET NO MEETING commercials.

Comment by Last Bull Moose Monday, Nov 14, 16 @ 12:27 pm

  16. Rauner could probably convince leaders to get in that room if he actually had a budget to present and discuss. I mean, they already know what the Turnaround Agenda says, so why meet to re-read it?

    Comment by illini97 Monday, Nov 14, 16 @ 12:31 pm

  17. If Rauner wanted to meet why announce it publicly before inviting the Dems and with no agenda?

Comment by Pyrman Monday, Nov 14, 16 @ 12:34 pm

  18. Deft Wing: You keep reporting to us on the opinions and feelings of the House Democratic Caucus. Are you a member of that caucus?

Comment by walker Monday, Nov 14, 16 @ 12:36 pm

  19. Lol, no more than you are now, Walker.

Common sense, man. Don’t suspend the use of it … especially now that you’re no longer one of Madigan’s lackeys. Cheers.

Comment by Deft Wing Monday, Nov 14, 16 @ 12:38 pm

  20. Hey Deft….
    News Flash:
Madigan has been getting pounded by Rauner Inc for two years.
Does that mean he should show up at a meeting. With no agenda and no Rauner budget proposal? To sing Hey Diddle Diddle?
    Don’t think so.

Comment by Winnin' Monday, Nov 14, 16 @ 12:50 pm

  21. Moose - that would require Madigan’s committees to run something other than the same ads they’ve run for the last 20 years.
