* House GOP Leader Jim Durkin emerged from the governor’s office this afternoon to ask that the Democrats not take up any veto overrides during the veto session and instead spend all their time on resolving the impasse.
“Let’s take care of the biggest issue that we have and that’s the budget,” Durkin said. “Let’s use all of our good will and our capital at solving the budget crisis.”
…Adding… The House Republican spokesperson is actively walking back Leader Durkin’s comments. He didn’t mean to say that no vetoes should be acted on, he meant to say that the GA could add days to deal with everything.
* Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno said after the brief meeting in Rauner’s office that she was “disappointed” that Senate President John Cullerton chose not to attend because Speaker Madigan decided against going to the meeting. Radogno said that Cullerton had once again chosen to “walk in his shadow.”
She also claimed that Speaker Madigan had agreed to go to the leaders meeting “and then came up with a conflict.”
“It’s game playing,” Radogno said. Madigan, she said, is “trying to stymie the governor.” When asked about Madigan’s possible negative reaction to all the campaign commercials run against him, she said that was no excuse and claimed Madigan was “derelict” in his duties for not showing up.
“It’s completely inexcusable for the Democrats not to be here,” she said.

Has there been any polls to see how popular Radogno is statewide? I suspect her to poll about as low as the Speaker statewide.

Do Rauner and the ILGOP seriously expect to attack Madigan, call him corrupt, etc, then expect him to just be like “okay lets all get along.”
I don’t think that works anywhere else, why would it work in politics?

Radogno, please remember:
The GOP is *still* the minority party in Illinois. Your friend Trump didn’t win here. The seats you picked up didn’t tip the balance.
You’re still the minority. Say it again. You’re still the minority.
You and Durkin are pretending like the balance of power is shifted. It hasn’t.
You’re still the minority party. Remember that, please.

And Rauner not presenting a constitutionally required balanced is somehow not “derelict?” It was on the tip of her tongue, but she ran out of script I’m guessing.

You want a meeting or a fight? It’s becoming clearer by the hour.
Or did they also ask what times might work? That’s usually what staff does, and usually not in front of a mic, but maybe they sincerely see another way?

Oh, please. After Madigan took over Glenn Poshard’s gubernatorial campaign, they ran a TV ad that all but accused George Ryan of murder. Gov. Ryan and Madigan got along just fine.

Leader Durkin is the most important Leader of the Four right now, if he wants to be.
Leader Durkin could be the one Republican Leader that could actually bring Rauner into being a governor that governs and a governor with wins that are doable.
Leader Radogno has no such place in the Four Top leadership.
There’s a reason Leader Durkin is as important as he is and using the tones he’s using.
There’s also a reason Leader Radogno can say whatever she wants and it changes very little in any governing.

Yep. And people don’t like Madigan, at all. And the negative PR will continue and will likely cause problems with his caucus; which is worth watching.

Mike Madigan has been throwing political pipe bombs for years. His rhetoric towards Governor Rauner is not exactly pleasant. So this certainly cuts both ways.

Mal, that’s just another piece of evidence that you really don’t have any reason to be here or to be permitted to stay.
To the post: The Speaker should be there. The Senate President should be there. Refusing to communicate is a surefire way to move “the middle” away from you. A bad Veto Session, could be extra bad for the Speaker. He should be more engaged.

Can the powers-that-be first provide their definition of a “balanced budget”? Because it they’re going to use the same “accounting” principles they always have, it’s not going to be balanced.

Maybe Durkin needs to address his comments about “using all our good will” toward Senator Radogno. She seem more interested in scoring political points than preserving any “good will.”

To the post: I can’t blame the speaker for not wanting to be used as a prop for the governor. They’ll have plenty of time to talk…on the speakers’ terms.

OW is right to simplify it to 60-30, however this battle has never been rational, nor will its ending. Rich wrote earlier that the speaker’s operation is outdated. I’m a democrat, and no fan of the Speaker, and I hope that Rauner keeps his foot on the dems neck once they return to springfield. Every Dem should be terrified of their vote for Madigan to continue being speaker. Rauner has the money to make this about Madier until the midterms. If I were a Dem, I wouldn’t be caught dead saying anything positive about the speaker on video. John Bradley? Can Mapes give the speech seconding his nomination as speaker? If not, which member is safe enough to give that speech? BFC? Lou Lang?

Madigan said the meeting was postponed, what’s the big deal if the meeting is in a few days as opposed to today. Radogno is as insincere as they come.

I’ve never been a fan of Radogno. She seems to only say what the governor told her to say or what she thinks he wants her to say. It’s annoying. Also, I agree with Rich,not many people seem to know who she is so her comments fall on deaf ears.

The Radogno and Durkin comments today are rich.
Goes to my personal dilemma of no heroes to be found in this whole mess.
There has been plenty of game playing by the GOP leadership and governor. But they do have a message and politically something is better than nothing.
This is MJM’s great failing. His failure to develop a message or allow a message to be developed is killing the ILDP, especially with anyone outside of the city of Chicago.
But still, Radogno and Durkin are tone deaf. Let me know when they cast a single vote in opposition to the governor without his approval.
