Rauner in a trick bag?

Posted in:

* The governor’s office would only tell Greg Hinz that it is “reviewing” the president’s executive order

A clause tucked into one of the executive orders President Donald Trump signed yesterday on illegal immigration could create a first-class headache for Gov. Bruce Rauner and his re-election prospects.

The clause—see Section 7 of the order at the bottom of this link—seeks to supercharge an existing program in which state and local law enforcement officials effectively become deputy federal agents, authorized “to perform the functions of immigration officers in relation to the investigation, apprehension or detention of aliens in the United States.”

The program comes with funding, and its intention as expressed in Trump’s executive order is quite clear: “enforcing federal immigration laws for that jurisdiction.”

Now, Rauner has taken great care to put and keep distance between himself and Trump. As previously reported, his administration wrote an unusual letter to congressional leaders urging them to go slow and be careful in revamping Obamacare and Medicaid, and he’s opposed sending the National Guard to Chicago to fight crime, as Trump has seemed to suggest.

But few things fire up the GOP’s conservative base as much as moving to boot “illegals.” And Rauner will need the support of such folks in his 2018 campaign.

And, to win, he’ll also need the support of folks who don’t agree with President Trump.

I’m assuming we’ll be seeing many more tricky and touchy items like this over the next two years.

  1. Trump is going to run roughshod over everybody. This guy is playing hardball.

  2. And the governor will make some sort of vague comment followed by inaction. You know, his style of governin’. It’s like having a billionaire Jimmy Carter for a governor.

  3. Who, Trump? Never met the guy?
Oh, I know several of his staff, Illinois will benefit!
    Do what now Mr. President?

  4. Choices…

    A) Disagree with this, publicly, and face possible “Twitter” retribution and the stigma Trump now does NOT like Rauner, alienating the Trump pockets of support Rauner needs.

    B) Agree with President Trump on policy and further solidify those feelings, real or otherwise, that Rauner IS Trump and Trump IS Rauner, and gin up Democratic turnout in 2018 based on being “Illinois’ Trump” in Trump’s midterm in a state Clinton carried.

Good thing there isn’t video of Rauner saying he supported Trump for President.

Both sides could really use that!

  5. Without even trying, Trump may do more to pin down Rauner’s positions than the Illinois Democratic has. Wouldn’t be that hard, I suppose.

Comment by Earnest Thursday, Jan 26, 17 @ 3:05 pm

  6. I am almost certain that Rauner has far more to gain than lose from opposing this. He’s never been hostile to immigrants, and the Republican base has been fine with that up to now.

  7. Governor Bruce Rauner “You guys keep sayin’ my re-election is about President Trump. It’s not, this election is really about Madigan!”

  8. Rauner in a trick bag?

    Boo hoo. My heart aches.

That’s one dude that deserves whatever comes his way.

    Karma, Bruce!

  9. You think Rauner will make a stand one way or another on this? He wouldn’t even mention trumps name during the election.

Comment by Rogue Roni Thursday, Jan 26, 17 @ 3:34 pm

  10. Trump/Rauner: “See what happens when you elect a maverick who isn’t really a member of your party? They have no sense of solidarity with or responsibility to anyone, and care only about themselves. They are rogues who run wild and are as likely to hurt you as help you!”

    Trump/Rauner: “Jinx!”

  11. The Illinois constitution says he’s supposed to present a balanced budget and he hasn’t done that so I doubt he’s all that worried about what a buried nugget in a presidential executive order says he’s supposed to do.

  12. I think it a great idea, and Rauner ahould embrace it

  14. What is it about “enforce the laws ” that Rauner needs to run from?

  15. ===What is it about “enforce the laws ” that Rauner needs to run from?===

“What is it about the name ‘Trump’ that Rauner needs to run from?”

    Hmm.

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Jan 26, 17 @ 5:37 pm

  16. I bet the majority of Illinois voters oppose this ’sanctuary city’ evasion of the law.

Then Rauner should tell Rshm he’s wrong and support Trump on this, like hours ago, days, weeks, months ago.

    Why hasn’t Rauner, lol

  18. == Rauner in a trick bag? ==

Can only hope so. Innocent Bystander Rauiner has overstayed its welcome. By a year and a half.

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Jan 26, 17 @ 6:11 pm

  19. Can someone let El Maligno know about Rauner’s aversion to his ideas and policies? A Rauner-Trump war would be nice.

Comment by Grandson of Man Thursday, Jan 26, 17 @ 6:21 pm

  20. Rauner continues to try this balancing act of not going full Kirk on Trump and not going all in with him either.

Rauner has no choice in this situation. Trump’s #1 issue and the issue that shot him to the top in the Republican Primary was illegal immigration. If Rauner supports Rahm on this he will lose the base like Kirk did. He has to hope there are enough blue dogs in South and Suburban Cook County who agree with Trump on this.

So. We voters took a billionaire businessman, inexperienced in government just like IL and multiplied it times 50 as our ManChild president.

Howz IL doing after 2years of this incompetence?

  22. A trick bag all the democrats got was a gift bag

Comment by Rabid Thursday, Jan 26, 17 @ 7:23 pm

  23. As to Chicago’s crime, Rauner built a couple of community centers, other than that he’s been content to allow the violence to continue with out providing assistance to Chicago.

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Jan 26, 17 @ 7:29 pm

  24. Rauner and Rahm need to wake up, immediately.

There is political will to remove a criminal element from the streets of Chicago. What good is a “sanctuary” full of felonious thugs? Who can defend that carp?

Save some lives boys, send home the drug dealers, rapists, and murderers.

Comment by cdog Thursday, Jan 26, 17 @ 9:52 pm

  25. um, they are not harboring drug dealers, rapists and murderers. but, to be fair, the pols here aren’t doing much to explain how Sanctuary City functions in Chicago. It’s not a San Francisco situation where they seem to harbor bad guys. people who commit crimes here get punished. whatever their status.

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Jan 26, 17 @ 11:00 pm

  26. Rahm and Rauner should let Trump deport all of the gang member in Chicago. That would solve Chicago’s crime problem and it will let Trump tell everyone he deported a lot of people out of the country. A Win - Win!
