Another day, another Rauner campaign ad

Posted in:

* I told subscribers what I think of this ad earlier today, so we’ll just let it go at that

* Script…

TV anchor: Gov. Bruce Rauner using his annual budget address to try to end the impasse down in Springfield.

TV anchor: A grand bargain that would balance the state of Illinois’ budget.

TV anchor: Pushing for Republicans and Democrats to come together.

TV anchor: Lawmakers in both parties agree for the first time the state needs regulatory change as well as reduced spending.

TV anchor: Term limits on state officials. A permanent freeze on property taxes and cost-saving changes.

Gov. Rauner: Let’s do what we were sent here to do.

  1. Yes governor, do what you were sent to Springfield to do. Propose a balanced budget.

Comment by Stark Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:24 am

  2. If I had the dough, I’d put together an ad taking full credit for peace in the Middle East. Because, you know, I called for that long ago and I’ve repeatedly pointed to it as a good thing, and stuff.

What do you mean, it’s not all settled?

Comment by Linus Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:27 am

  3. Because taking out-of-context snippits of statements being made by TV anchors doesn’t look like obvious propaganda and ludicrously fake. Good work Governor Gridlock.

Comment by PublicServant Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:29 am

  4. Rauner is finally trying to sell a politically-feasible deal. This is good news. The things Rauner now wants are the most politically popular and bipartisan items - property tax freeze, term limits, paying down the debt etc. Democrats shouldn’t overthink this. His new “demands” actually make the package more politically palatable for them too.

Comment by Good Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:29 am

  5. === taking out-of-context snippits===

Nah. He generally gets pretty good teevee coverage in the city.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:30 am

  6. Let’s all be very clear;

    Rauner’s plan has been…

Let the Senate… let the Senate… work towards a grand compromise that Rauner… here’s the rub… stays out of what the Senate was trying to accomplish.

Rauner himself, as Governor, has no budgetary accomplishments.

What’s so scary for any governor not having any budgetary accomplishments is what a budget does and shows and frames about a governor…

A budget weighs, measures, and puts a financial measure on programs and agendas that a governor wants for Illinois

Bruce Rauner, since January 2015, has no weight, measure, program or agenda framed writhin budgetary measures.

    To quote Crain’s

“By nearly every measure, the state is worse off since Rauner took office”…

    By nearly every measure…

Like a budget. Weighing… measuring… and Rauner has… no measure.

So, what will Rauner do to fool voters? “Simple”… Rauner will tell the Senate… “I’ll stay out of it, you go for it”… but… I need it to happen… ’cause I need a… measure… of success.

    Right? Exactly right.

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:31 am

  7. Uncle Fuzzy with an Enemies List.

Comment by wordslinger Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:33 am

  8. There is one reason and one reason only why the “Grand Bargain” has stalled: because Raunerites like the IPI, Dan Proft, and the Chamber have frightened Senate Republicans out of supporting it.

For him to claim some sort of ownership of an effort his allies have worked to destroy is beyond belief.

Comment by Roman Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:33 am

  9. So if and when the Senate manages to pull their deal together, the governor will be standing there ready to take credit for it.

Comment by Archiesmom Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:35 am

  10. This guy hasn’t stopped campaigning since he was elected. Enough already, DO YOUR JOB!

Comment by Higher Ed Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:35 am

  11. This is an excellent ad for the lightly informed, those who know there are problems but have not dived into the details.

For some of us this is more bogus posturing.

Comment by Last Bull Moose Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:35 am

  12. This demonstrates a large part of what is wrong with this governor. He has never stopped campaigning. He knows quite well how to run for office, he just doesn’t have the slightest idea how to govern now that he is in.

Comment by PDJT Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:37 am

  13. When Rauner stops IPI and the ignorance that is the ILGOP railing on Democrats… and… Proft decides that silence is golden…

Then I’ll believe Rauner has an aim at wanting a budgetary success

BossMadigan.Com, #TaxHikike, IPI, Proft… They all, funded by Rauner, magically seem to be on the same page of derailing anything and everything by attacking Democrats, Republicans, “Madigan”, even Process.

When this stops, I’ll know how genuine Rauner is.

    Not a moment sooner.

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:37 am

  14. governin is hard. campaignin is easy, especially when being flexible with the truth comes so easy. When did we decide to accept such flim flam from our leaders?

Comment by Anon Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:38 am

  15. If he spent half as much time governing as he does campaigning he could perhaps get something accomplished. He’s wasted 2 + years of his term on this sort of nonsense.

Comment by Demoralized Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:40 am

  16. He looks and sounds good in the ad. Perhaps he thinks Proft and the IPI won’t be enough to prevent the Senate from passing something, so he’s smart to be way out ahead of events.

Comment by Earnest Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:40 am

  17. Even the Platitudes are getting sick of this guy. They are heading to St. Claire County to file a restraint order.

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:42 am

  18. Let’s do what we were sent to do? The governor was sent to bring competence and accomplishment to state government. Instead he brought hostage-taking and destruction. The state is far worse off today, and that says a lot, for this broken state.

Since Rauner is campaignin’, we should ask the Reagan question: Is Illinois better off today than it was when the governor took office? The answer is very clear.

Comment by Grandson of Man Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:44 am

  19. Wow was that a budget address or an infomercial ?

Comment by Rabid Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:47 am

  20. Interesting Ad ; Rauner is playing the medium and long game here. If the grand bargain works he gets partial credit - if it doesn’t he can say he tried and then it is full speed ahead to 2018. This ad might best resonate with the vast majority of Illinoisans that are not employed by government or affiliated with a union. That permanent property tax freeze is very attractive to homeowners !

Comment by Texas Red Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:48 am

  21. Someone called this “spiking the ball on the 10-yard line.” (Subscribers know more.)

It’s actually like a player from the opposing team coming off the bench and spiking the ball on the 10-yard line.

Comment by Roman Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:53 am

  22. ==So if and when the Senate manages to pull their deal together, the governor will be standing there ready to take credit for it.==

He would get credit in that situation regardless. It’s the flip side of #GovernorsOwn. Similarly, if it falls apart, he’ll take the blame.

Comment by Arsenal Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 9:59 am

  23. Maybe it’s me, but Rich’s YouTube screenshot reflects a hapless governor hoping something (anything!) takes place during his term.

    Way to go, Governor Bystander!

Comment by Jocko Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 10:00 am

  24. What does a property tax freeze actually mean? So, if some IL residents are not in a fire protection district (or park, library, water conservation, etc.), they cannot then create one? Because revenue for the new district would come from property taxes which are frozen, am I right?

Comment by gdubya Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 10:01 am

  25. A commercial within 48 hours of his budget address, UGH. It is mind boggling that the Governor and his advisors can ignore daily consequences of their actions on state agencies, employees, program recipients, vendors and creditors. No matter how hard I try to understand their brazen disregard for all of us citizens I just get more livid. This destructive cost for ideology is immoral. Perhaps only the Faith/Religious community calling him out can have an impact.

Comment by don the legend Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 10:05 am

  26. Words
    Deeds

If you dont know the context, his words sound fairly reasonable and reassuring. The GA laughed bec they know the context, and the absurdity of his words vs deeds.

The budget and reform website includes a “hard spending cap”. Thats a new one to me. Did i miss that in the budget address?/s

Comment by Langhorne Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 10:06 am

  27. Nice ad. If I lived in Billings, Montana I might for a second think that Rauner is a great unifier. I could unify Lions and Hyenas faster than Rauner can unify our Government. It’s not all his fault of course but he sure drew a line in the sand from jump street.

Comment by CrazyHorse Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 10:15 am

  28. Someone should tell the Guv that after yesterday’s press conference by the President, no one believes what the phony, unfair press says.

Comment by Henry Francis Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 10:16 am

  29. OW you are impossible to please.

After two years of his budget proposals and reform proposals being completely ignored what exactly is wrong with going along with the Senate grand compromise?

Compromise is what they are supposed to do!

What are the democrats wins these past two years of gridlock?

Pretty narrow trophy case for them too.

Comment by Lucky Pierre Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 10:41 am

  30. ==what exactly is wrong with going along with the Senate grand compromise?==

If he agrees to the Grand Bargain, I’ll praise him for it. He hasn’t yet.

==What are the democrats wins these past two years of gridlock?==

I’m sure we can talk about those when the Democrats run an ad praising themselves for saying we ought to solve the budget crisis.

Comment by Arsenal Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 10:48 am

  31. ===OW you are impossible to please.===

Nah, get me on a golf course with a cold Yuengling and a Chicago style hot dog on a cloudless day… Oops, sorry…

No, the standard is measurable success… a budget.

    Not too high a bar.

===… what exactly is wrong with going along with the Senate grand compromise?===

Claiming it as his own in an Ad? “Other than that… ”

Rauner himself said he is staying out of it, yet this Ad touts himself as the catalyst bringing all sides together?

Really? Rauner being “passive”, while having his funded groups attack… in no particular order… Radogno, Senate Republicans, Madigan, Democrats…

And now Rauner, even hours after attacks… is the great healer? Oh boy.

Governors own budgets. They alone sign, veto, implement to paying for their programs with it.

    “Bruce Rauner failed”

This Ad is about Rauner claiming a win… by doing nothing to seem against it… but…

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 10:49 am

  32. After 2+ years, the population of those who are lightly or uninformed is shrinking. If the action groups I follow are any indication, people know exactly what the governor is up to (shirking, blaming) and not up to (negotiating to produce a fair budget).

Comment by Politix Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 10:55 am

  33. Somewhere out there his Dartmouth roommate is saying, I know exactly how you feel Illinois Senate.

Comment by Michelle Flaherty Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 10:58 am

  34. Geez OW, you are never satisfied. All you are asking for is competence, human decency, and some sort of positive results. And you call yourself a Republican. /s

And an ice cold Yeungling sounds outstanding. It’s about time to make a Smokey and the Bandit type escapade to Ohio….

Comment by Ducky LaMoore Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 11:01 am

  35. Nothing new here, Rauner is still inserting unrelated non-budget Turnaround Agenda items as a precondition to a budget. Still holding and starving hostages. His term limit demand is an attempt to force a situation where new Democrats would run against new Republicans. Rauner would then buy nonstop ads against the new Democratic candidate in order to get complete control of the house and senate. Very deceptive governor.

Comment by DuPage Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 11:09 am

  36. Roman, I need to put you on speed dial. That was a great comment. :)

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 11:10 am

  37. - Ducky LaMoore -

I have been informed by a highly regarded and reliable source that Yuengling can be purchased in Indiana, a mere 1 hour and 8 minutes from Oswego.

Your idea of sending a trailer ala Smokey and the Bandit is worth exploring further! OW.

    To the Post, further,

Is this also a left-handed way to deflect from Proft and IPI, putting them on notice, or is it a continuation of allowing Rauner’s own narrative to over-shadow the under-current of looking for ways to keep this agreement at arms length until Rauner gets his required wins?

    Lots to unpack.

Or… it’s Rauner just claiming others possible triumphs.

    “Simple”

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 11:16 am

  38. It depends how many of Rauner’s proposals wind up passing in the Grand Compromise before there is any spiking of the football.

What makes you think the democrats would have proposed at least 1/2 of those ideas by themselves?

Comment by Lucky Pierre Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 11:30 am

  39. Golf, sunshine and Yuengling and I will throw in the Cubs too.

We finally agree on something OW

Comment by Lucky Pierre Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 11:32 am

  40. … Pat and Ron on the radio in the cart… Ah… Yes.

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 11:38 am

  41. I guess we all can see that in the last couple of years he’s really learned that he needs to focus on or pay attention to messaging above all else.

This is good messaging. It’s not representative of reality or good governing, but it’s a good message and reflective of when flying the W is more important than any other outcome for the millions of people in this state.

We’ve elected Crassus — but our Crassus didn’t have an ounce of public service before buying his way into office and unlike other politicians it’s not really clear what his end goal is. What does he want his legacy to be?

In other states where Governors have driven things into the ground, like Kansas, it’s at least evident what they were trying to do and they at least fulfilled their constitutional obligations.

Comment by Anon Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 11:38 am

  42. Pretty effective ad. Well within the parameters for “truthiness” that our political world has come to.

Even the politically aware voters I run around with, are too Trumpified right now to be paying much attention to any Rauner misrepresentation.

Comment by walker Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 11:41 am

  43. Telling: LP and OW reach Grand Compromise before the leaders of our state.

Comment by AlfondoGonz Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 11:50 am

  44. Wonder how long before the Dems use the teleprompter snafu in an ad

Comment by It's All About Me Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 11:54 am

  45. ===… Pat and Ron on the radio in the cart… Ah… Yes.===

Nah…. Ed and DJ on the radio in the boat…. Ah….

Comment by Ducky LaMoore Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 12:12 pm

  46. It’s almost like the Lt. Gov taking credit for the Grand Bargain work.

Comment by Michelle Flaherty Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 12:27 pm

  47. Does this mean that Rauner will announce his support for any specific bill? Of course not, he just needs enough for his next wave of commercials.

Comment by Trapped in the 'burbs Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 12:37 pm

  48. At bedtime every night I pray to wake up in the morning to find Suzanne Pleshette next to me, and erupt in joy that the last several years was just a dream.

Comment by illinoised Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 1:02 pm

  49. So this spot is actually running? He picks some strange times to go on air.

And just an image spot, too — no call to action. Is that supposed to stick for nearly two years?

Who the heck cares about Rauner in Feb. 2017 when the Trump showing is playing 24/7 on the Tee Vee box?

Comment by wordslinger Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 1:19 pm

  50. ==After 2+ years, the population of those who are lightly or uninformed is shrinking.==

Well, I doubt that, but low levels of information don’t help Rauner right now.

Comment by Arsenal Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 1:34 pm

  51. - illinoised - love the Newhart reference, well played!

    To the post:

If Bruce Rauner wanted the “Grand Bargain” to pass the Senate, it would have already passed. He controls the Senate Republicans, not Christine Radogno.

Comment by Telly Friday, Feb 17, 17 @ 1:44 pm

  52. - Ducky LaMoore -

Ed and DJ do a really good job on the radio, but, Cubs…

    - AlfondoGonz -

Take it as a sign that there will be an end to this soon.

I’ll look forward to more of these ads, hopefully they can bookend a Proft attack ad or…
