TV anchor: Gov. Bruce Rauner using his annual budget address to try to end the impasse down in Springfield.
TV anchor: A grand bargain that would balance the state of Illinois’ budget.
TV anchor: Pushing for Republicans and Democrats to come together.
TV anchor: Lawmakers in both parties agree for the first time the state needs regulatory change as well as reduced spending.
TV anchor: Term limits on state officials. A permanent freeze on property taxes and cost-saving changes.
Gov. Rauner: Let’s do what we were sent here to do.

If I had the dough, I’d put together an ad taking full credit for peace in the Middle East. Because, you know, I called for that long ago and I’ve repeatedly pointed to it as a good thing, and stuff.

Because taking out-of-context snippits of statements being made by TV anchors doesn’t look like obvious propaganda and ludicrously fake. Good work Governor Gridlock.

Rauner is finally trying to sell a politically-feasible deal. This is good news. The things Rauner now wants are the most politically popular and bipartisan items - property tax freeze, term limits, paying down the debt etc. Democrats shouldn’t overthink this. His new “demands” actually make the package more politically palatable for them too.

Rauner’s plan has been…
Let the Senate… let the Senate… work towards a grand compromise that Rauner… here’s the rub… stays out of what the Senate was trying to accomplish.
Rauner himself, as Governor, has no budgetary accomplishments.
What’s so scary for any governor not having any budgetary accomplishments is what a budget does and shows and frames about a governor…
A budget weighs, measures, and puts a financial measure on programs and agendas that a governor wants for Illinois
Bruce Rauner, since January 2015, has no weight, measure, program or agenda framed writhin budgetary measures.
To quote Crain’s
“By nearly every measure, the state is worse off since Rauner took office”…
By nearly every measure…
Like a budget. Weighing… measuring… and Rauner has… no measure.
So, what will Rauner do to fool voters? “Simple”… Rauner will tell the Senate… “I’ll stay out of it, you go for it”… but… I need it to happen… ’cause I need a… measure… of success.
Right? Exactly right.

There is one reason and one reason only why the “Grand Bargain” has stalled: because Raunerites like the IPI, Dan Proft, and the Chamber have frightened Senate Republicans out of supporting it.
For him to claim some sort of ownership of an effort his allies have worked to destroy is beyond belief.

This is an excellent ad for the lightly informed, those who know there are problems but have not dived into the details.

This demonstrates a large part of what is wrong with this governor. He has never stopped campaigning. He knows quite well how to run for office, he just doesn’t have the slightest idea how to govern now that he is in.

When Rauner stops IPI and the ignorance that is the ILGOP railing on Democrats… and… Proft decides that silence is golden…
Then I’ll believe Rauner has an aim at wanting a budgetary success
BossMadigan.Com, #TaxHikike, IPI, Proft… They all, funded by Rauner, magically seem to be on the same page of derailing anything and everything by attacking Democrats, Republicans, “Madigan”, even Process.
When this stops, I’ll know how genuine Rauner is.
Not a moment sooner.

He looks and sounds good in the ad. Perhaps he thinks Proft and the IPI won’t be enough to prevent the Senate from passing something, so he’s smart to be way out ahead of events.

Let’s do what we were sent to do? The governor was sent to bring competence and accomplishment to state government. Instead he brought hostage-taking and destruction. The state is far worse off today, and that says a lot, for this broken state.
Since Rauner is campaignin’, we should ask the Reagan question: Is Illinois better off today than it was when the governor took office? The answer is very clear.

Interesting Ad ; Rauner is playing the medium and long game here. If the grand bargain works he gets partial credit - if it doesn’t he can say he tried and then it is full speed ahead to 2018. This ad might best resonate with the vast majority of Illinoisans that are not employed by government or affiliated with a union. That permanent property tax freeze is very attractive to homeowners !

He would get credit in that situation regardless. It’s the flip side of #GovernorsOwn. Similarly, if it falls apart, he’ll take the blame.

What does a property tax freeze actually mean? So, if some IL residents are not in a fire protection district (or park, library, water conservation, etc.), they cannot then create one? Because revenue for the new district would come from property taxes which are frozen, am I right?

A commercial within 48 hours of his budget address, UGH. It is mind boggling that the Governor and his advisors can ignore daily consequences of their actions on state agencies, employees, program recipients, vendors and creditors. No matter how hard I try to understand their brazen disregard for all of us citizens I just get more livid. This destructive cost for ideology is immoral. Perhaps only the Faith/Religious community calling him out can have an impact.

The budget and reform website includes a “hard spending cap”. Thats a new one to me. Did i miss that in the budget address?/s

Nice ad. If I lived in Billings, Montana I might for a second think that Rauner is a great unifier. I could unify Lions and Hyenas faster than Rauner can unify our Government. It’s not all his fault of course but he sure drew a line in the sand from jump street.

Compromise is what they are supposed to do!

And now Rauner, even hours after attacks… is the great healer? Oh boy.
Governors own budgets. They alone sign, veto, implement to paying for their programs with it.

After 2+ years, the population of those who are lightly or uninformed is shrinking. If the action groups I follow are any indication, people know exactly what the governor is up to (shirking, blaming) and not up to (negotiating to produce a fair budget).

Nothing new here, Rauner is still inserting unrelated non-budget Turnaround Agenda items as a precondition to a budget. Still holding and starving hostages. His term limit demand is an attempt to force a situation where new Democrats would run against new Republicans. Rauner would then buy nonstop ads against the new Democratic candidate in order to get complete control of the house and senate. Very deceptive governor.

Is this also a left-handed way to deflect from Proft and IPI, putting them on notice, or is it a continuation of allowing Rauner’s own narrative to over-shadow the under-current of looking for ways to keep this agreement at arms length until Rauner gets his required wins?

It depends how many of Rauner’s proposals wind up passing in the Grand Compromise before there is any spiking of the football.

I guess we all can see that in the last couple of years he’s really learned that he needs to focus on or pay attention to messaging above all else.
This is good messaging. It’s not representative of reality or good governing, but it’s a good message and reflective of when flying the W is more important than any other outcome for the millions of people in this state.
We’ve elected Crassus — but our Crassus didn’t have an ounce of public service before buying his way into office and unlike other politicians it’s not really clear what his end goal is. What does he want his legacy to be?
In other states where Governors have driven things into the ground, like Kansas, it’s at least evident what they were trying to do and they at least fulfilled their constitutional obligations.
