Pawar hires Trippi as chief strategist

Posted in:

* Greg Hinz

Chicago Ald. Ameya Pawar hasn’t generated much media respect or money in his long-shot bid for governor. But the North Side Democrat may be about to change that with a very interesting hire.

Joining Pawar’s campaign as chief strategist will be Washington-based consultant Joe Trippi, Pawar’s campaign tells me. Team Pawar also has begun using the slogan “a new deal for Illinois,” a clear reference to Franklin D. Roosevelt and his national leadership during the Depression and World War II.

Trippi is on anyone’s national A list of advisers a candidate would want on their side.

Best known for being former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean’s campaign manager for president in 2004—Dean actually led for a while, until sort of imploding on TV—Trippi also ran Jerry Brown’s comeback bid to again be elected governor of California and a variety of successful congressional campaigns.

Pawar has reported raising $30K for both of his campaign committees since the start of the new year.

  1. That hire immediately changes the perception of his candidacy and will allow him to start raising money both locally and nationally.

  2. “…Trippi’s fee, with a $29,999.99 signing fee represents the ‘all in’ commitment Pawar is making… ”

If I were Trippi, I’d ask to be paid, always in advance, and in cash…

  3. He was In Normal and was interviewed by WGLT. I liked his message a great deal. http://wglt.org/post/gov-hopeful-pawar-stop-fighting-over-scraps

  4. This will give Pawatr some instant credibility in the progressive movement, and give him access to a lot of money. If he can get his message out there, this will be a really interesting campaign. Joe Trippi is very good at his job.

  5. @OW

I’m surprised you even bothered to comment, given your low opinion of Pawar’s qualifications! LOL

  6. I wouldn’t underestimate him. He is the only non millionaire running.

He term limited himself and has no connection to Madigan.

What will Rauner’s millions do against him? Pawar can fight Rauner asymmetrically.

  7. “President” Howard Dean can tell everyone what a great strategist Joe Trippi is.

    YEEEEEEOWWW

  8. - Ducky LaMoore -

I just found it adorbs that a campaign with $30K signs on an operative with that profile when the driest goal should be to get to $100K in the coffers.

    Otherwise… lol

  9. We’ll have to see if this is actually “& Associates” work, or Joe Trippi himself. It seems a little odd, but this race may be part of a much larger DNC picture. Hence, Trippi.

  10. This is definitely a very serious candidacy. Trippi’s hiring will help Pawar’s prospects of picking up most of the Sanders vote, which as the primary showed amounts to close to 50% of the Illinois Democratic electorate. Chris Kennedy must move to the Left now.

  11. As I said yesterday, Pawar should not be underestimated.

Comment by Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner Tuesday, Feb 28, 17 @ 2:16 pm

  12. Pawar will only be taken seriously if it’s visibly seen that paying Trippi his fees isn’t 50% of the most raised in a reporting period.

Right now, Pawar is only serious within those wanting Pawar to be taken seriously.

    That’s not the best argument.

  13. @OW

I guess he thinks he needs to spend money to raise money (and he is probably right). And agreed on the being taken serious argument. At least he takes himself seriously and is conducting himself like he should be taken seriously. The last thing anyone wants is the ole jean shorts Scott Lee Cohen running amok.

  14. Thanks - Ducky LaMoore -

    To this…

===The last thing anyone wants is the ole jean shorts Scott Lee Cohen running amok.===

    This is too true.

You hire to raise money, yes, that is an avenue, a well-tested and well-paved avenue, but Pawar is still a City of Chicago Alderman lacking a true base of operation.

Walking away from your Ward to run statewide, that’s not using a recognized base to build, it’s a great way to show how small it is in a big picture ball game.

The jeans shorts was a good line…

  15. “Kennedy must move to the left now”

If he was in a boat it would have already tipped over

Comment by Lucky Pierre Tuesday, Feb 28, 17 @ 2:38 pm

  16. Pawar was already the candidate that progressives were lining up with. This might give a minor bump with the middle aged crowd with warm Dean memories. Pawar’s challenge is taking national-level enthusiasm and channeling it into a state race both in dollars and bodies. A challenge for anyone trying to tap into the current organizing and engagement wave.

    I don’t think Daiber is a millionaire.

  18. I am also not a millionaire….

  19. I’ve done some work with Joe. He’s good but not good enough if you don’t have the money to implement his message.

Comment by Tom Tuesday, Feb 28, 17 @ 2:46 pm

  20. I’m a millionaire, but just barely. That’s all in. I might have to die in order to get it all on the table.

Consider this. Not sure Trippi’s name still has a lot of purchase amongst lefties.

    So can Governor Jerry Brown

  23. Monday 1: Pawar hires Trippi.

Tuesday: Sudden influx of pawar-bots to online forums.

Friday: Still no one in the real world paying attention to his candidacy.
