My guess is that this “Scab Database” will be off to good start with lots of bogus names, birthdates and email addresses.
It’s not difficult for a hacker to find a ‘bot to do this for them, since there is no CAPTCHA check on this website to check for an actual human being.

NN, those statutes deal with “professional strikebreakers.” It used to be a thing.
“‘Professional strikebreaker’ means any person who repeatedly and habitually offers himself for employment on a temporary basis where a lockout or strike exists to take the place of an employee whose work has ceased as a direct consequence of such lockout or strike.”

Weust keep in mind this will be an unfair labor practice strike. They can hire temps but not permenant replacements. Let them try to do our jobs. They’ll lose 90 % in two days.
Remember they won’t get paid diddly if at all.
Plus I’m sure if Rauner has stashed funds it might be pretty illegal.

Rich, I’m not seeing anything in that first statute stating professional strike breakers. Seems you’re right with the second one, but the first may be applicable in this situation.

I wouldn’t trust any number the Administration throws out. They’re going to inflate it anyway to continue the intimidation campaign.

I’m sure all 1,700 of those applicants are legit, and are capable of doing any state job assigned to them as well or better than AFSCME members. When 20,000 people go on strike, Rauner will be ready.

Rich - you sure about the first statute NickName cites? That one doesn’t mention professional strikebreaker. Just prohibits advertising for replacements in anticipation of a strike.

These 1,700 applicants are nothing more than a mailing list of names. None of these people had to enter qualifications, job history, or background checks. Most are probably felons with past records that prevent them from being employed.
Once again… it is only a scare tactic used by the Governor’s Office in hopes of getting workers to cross the line.
Lastly, for those that think about crossing the line I hope you keep one thing in mind before making that choice. If you don’t stand up now and the Governor wins this battle, things will only get worst. Do you honestly think that the next contract would be better or different once they have seen they are able to break the Union? You will regret it… maybe not day one, but in future contracts that will be increasingly worst. Then you will begin to bad mouth the Union for not doing it’s job, when really the problem was you not holding up your end when it counted most.

The first statute doesn’t say anything about professionals, but it does say “while the strike or lockout is in progress” and “unless it shall be stated in such advertisement that a strike or lockout is in progress at such place of business. “

DHS Human Service Caseworkers. It takes a couple of years to learn policies, and you can’t hire off the street with this type of knowledge and experience. Winnebago DHS lost many of the new hires in this title in recent years, because they didn’t like the work situation or found new jobs out of state.

Rich, looks like you’re correct about the second Act I linked to, but not about the Advertisement for Strike Workers Act. It appears to apply across the board, not just to advertising for professional strikebreakers.

I don’t get it. State employee union members say all the time that working public service is challenging, noble, etc. Why wouldn’t someone want apply if its a better option than what they currently have?
I think a lot the folks doing the snark here are whistling past the graveyard.
If there is a real strike people will apply for those jobs and some of them will be hired.

Guys, The Advertisement for Strike Workers Act doesn’t say you can’t advertise for strike breakers. It says you can’t advertise for strike breakers UNLESS the ad makes clear that the job is to replace a striking worker.
Nothing for AFSCME lawyers to do here.

I filled out application and indicated an interest in an area I have no qualifications for whatsoever. And I doubt that many of those 1700 have the job skills to match what the State will need, much less the education or appropriate vocational/technical training and skills, required licenses or certificates. Once you begin to think in terms of what will be actually needed if even only half of AFSCME walks, that’s still about 19,000 positions for which job duties must be covered.

To the Post,
The 1,700 is a mere measuring of having a website dedicated to fishing for names to apply pressure on those in AFSCME to worry about wether to strike or not.
If anything, how many of these “names” can fill the numerous jobs that need credentials or experience by the nature of the work. Not every “job” is entry level, not all the 1.700 will be perfect fits to make any transition smooth.
My point?
I dunno if I’d be so willing to fill spots that tries to say “we will move forward” and see a decline that might be best if the spot wasn’t filled at all.
This could be bad news, filling spots and failing instead of just letting the halting of work occur.

In the short term, no, I’m dubious there is anything close to enough educated and/or skilled workers to replace all the strikers if a strike comes to pass. But in the not-that-long term, I have no doubt many of those workers will face the same fate as in the private sector.

I believe the point is not the names on the site, it is Rauner again wins the news cycle about the “flood” of applicants. Congrats all the creative people who put in phony names. You increased the count to make the press release geared to the suburban voters more effective. It would be much better for AFSCME if they said that this new site only had 10 names apply, a clear indication that Illinois supports the union. Instead they say 1,700 names in three days…the fact that 500 turn out to be bogus, no one will remember that beyond those who enter comments on this page.

OW The problem with filling the jobs with temps is there will be no training except on the job. The learning curve will be extreme. The mess that these people will create will take months to correct. It would be a disaster no matter what agency/dept they work for. Just saying

Hoping for a pronouncement from the Fourth District Appellate Court this afternoon. It’s maddening trying to guess what they’ll do. If they’re with AFSCME they may sit on the case for another year. If they’re with Bruce they could’ve stuck it to AFSCME months ago. Maybe that implies they’re with AFSCME.
