Ironically enough, as noted in the tweet, that excerpt was from a recent Tribune story.
* This doesn’t mean that the rapper didn’t get some help or some coaching. He can afford to pay for it and his father has been in Chicago politics for a very long time, including a stint with Mayor Emanuel.
But, again, if you scan through his Twitter page you’ll see that he did a bunch of homework before today’s press conference. Give the guy a little credit. Not everyone’s a tool.

And it isn’t like this is his first foray into activism. He’s been an anti-violence activist for a few years. He partnered with NAACP to register voters at his concerts. And he led several hundred on a march to his polling place back in November

Seriously though - Chance is a smart guy, with political parents. He probably sought guidance from folks to make sure he best leveraged the opportunity provided to him by…the Governor. Good for him!

distract and deflect, don’t listen to what Chance says, try to figure out a way to discredit a nice young man from helping in a situation where the grown ups don’t seem to care much about these days.

Ruthhart and company are hardly immune from the criticism he leveled at Chance. Rahm’s emails exposed how easily worked over the vast majority of the City Hall press corps is.

Remind me whose idea was it to dangle $215 million for Dems to negotiate on pension reform only to have them fail to pass pension reform and then whack Rauner with the offer?
There’s a lesson in there for today’s talks.

Let’s gove Chance a lot of credit….shows more interest and prep, than BigBrain who continues to show he spends nearly zero time on prep for any event. Now BigBrain should team him up with Goldie to get you know what done

I listened to the entire presentation and thought he did a good job.
I thought it was refreshingly non political. Sure he told Rauner to do his job, but so has just about everyone outside of IPI and the Tribune. Rauner is probably lucky the guy didn’t really lay into him like I suspect many in the Mayor’s office and elsewhere would have liked.

Chance is 23. 23! If I was even in the same universe of being engaged and together as he is, well, I probably wouldn’t need my Cadillac pension.
The governor has an entire staff of people to prep him and he still vetoed the pension bill and said it was “a little emotional”
The governor is what? in his 60’s?
Give me someone like Chance every time.

The fact that some Illinois residents and even Capitol Fax commentators wrote Chance off because he’s a rap and hip-hop artist is seriously concerning to me. He’s young and he’s black; that doesn’t mean he doesn’t know what he’s doing or what he’s talking about. Side note: I’m a big fan of Chance the Rapper, so take the above for what you will.

I wish Governor Rauner would get some help with his message, policies and strategies. Rauner could learn a lot, including from Chicago city hall. With enough help, Rauner could even have a balanced budget.

One last comment about Chance –
I had absolutely no idea a week ago who he was, what he was about and why he would even want to meet with BVR.
The younger generation in my family set me straight, even though his music is not necessarily their preferred genre, they knew his music and more importantly what he was about outside his music.
I now applaud his interest and activism.
Whatever it takes!

I think being prepared for the meeting shows respect for the office. The Governor is very busy and has a lot of responsibilities. To get some 1:1 time to talk about an issue important to a person is a rare opportunity for anyone and I’m glad he didn’t squander it.

Hilarious that the Tribune, of all publications, would give anybody a hard time for supposedly channeling somebody else’s talking points when the Tribune for more than two years has consistently, repeatedly and shamelessly published editorials in absolute lockstep with the governor’s message.
Not exactly a pillar of independent thought over there at the Trib.

Perhaps members of the Republican Party and their supporters (Tribune?) are starting to worry that it will lose youth vote for much of their lives. Rauner has hit youth directly through failing to adequately fund post-secondary education. Many idealistic youth care about social services. If additional persons who younger votes respect speak out against Rauner, then perhaps long-term damage will be done to the Republican Party.
