Leader Radogno: “No Governor’s spokesman, even Goldberg speaks for the Senate caucus”

Posted in:

* Earlier today, we talked about this quote attributed to a “Rauner confidant” in the Tribune

“It came down to three things: workers’ comp, parity in (the length of) the income tax and property tax and budget cuts. Cullerton’s position is ‘This is the deal, take it or leave it’ and as far as we’re concerned, it’s dead and there’s nothing more for us to do because we’re not going to take a bad deal and neither is the Senate (Republican) caucus,” he said.

* Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno just sent me this on the record text message…

No Governor’s spokesman, even Goldberg speaks for the Senate caucus. Also, the Grand bargain is not and never has been “take it or leave it” from Cullerton. We are still working on final version with more give and take.

Whoa.

The biggest rule under the Dome has always been to stay the heck out of the internal workings of a Leader’s caucus. Rauner has repeatedly violated that rule and she’s apparently had enough of it.

The governor, by the way, is holding a Chicago press conference today at 10:30. Could get interesting.

  1. Thank you, Leader Radogno, on behalf of human services providers. I hope your constituents are watching. This response took courage.

  6. Tough talk from Radogno. Now let’s see some independent actions.

Because right now, Rauner and the Frat
Boys have good reason to believe you’re all bought and paid for. That’s why they have no problem casually disrespecting you.

  7. I don’t always agree with R’s and Leader Radogno, but I do give her this: she’s trying, and I respect that. More so than than you-know-who. #DoYourJob Governor.

  8. Wow!

First sign of life I’ve seen from the GOP in 2 years — maybe longer.

Thumbs up — way up — for Radogno.

    More of this please.

  11. Leader Radogno,

What can I do to help?

    OW

    To the Post,

Since Jump Street I’ve been begging, pleading, prodding, cajoling, insisting, even pushing back against my own better judgement against Leaders Radogno and Durkin solely because I greatly respect them and I’ve felt their autonomy was critical for Rauner and the actual Republicans in the General Assembly.

Enough is enough, great on Leader Radogno.

    Can’t be with you more.

Be the leader I know you are and continue to speak for you, your Caucus, and for a better Illinois based on compromise, doing the doable, and the critical importance of separation of powers.

    “How can I help?”

  12. To Leader Radogno- Good. Now keep going on Going Around. Rauner is intent on throwing wrenches and sledgehanmmers (velvet or not) at everything. He wants chaos and crisis. I hope other members of your caucus are starting to realize that. Two years of waitin’ for Rauner to change was at least one year too long.

  13. Interesting and encouraging but sad to say that it’s not materially different from the day that the Grand Bargain died, she was the lone remaining vote in the Republican caucus still supporting the bargain. It was the other members of her caucus that the Governor pulled off the bargain and until we see quotes like this from some (any) of them unfortunately not much has changed.

  19. They don’t speak for us, but they do pay for our campaigns. And they did cause us to stop voting yes on agreed bills in the grand bargain. But, uh, yeah…they don’t speak for us.

If she runs again. Exhibiting a tad of political independence is a characteristic of legislators who aren’t running again.

  22. -Anon- If Radagno gets primared you can take it to the bank she will have every committeeman from both Cook and Dupage in her corner. The state party wouldn’t dare make that mistake, she far more popular than any on the other side.

So much for the Rauner “confidant”. heh

  24. If we can get a little more willingness to compromise from the Democrats and a revolt on the part of the GOP Legislature we might get a budget. I’m not sure about the revolt part though. Of course the Governor could suddenly decide to become a little more conciliatory and mainstream in the interest of moving the state forward instead of backward but I’m not holding my breath on that one.

  25. I like this a lot. Even the Republicans are starting to get annoyed with Rauner’s inability to do his job. Good on her, and here’s hoping that she and Cullerton can get some momentum going!

Comment by Franklin Delano Bluth Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 11:23 am

  26. Good for her is right. She’s been underestimated. That’s a dangerous game for anyone to play. She’s earned the trust of her counterpart, the Senate Pres. I’d say more folks than just the Gov should take heed.

  27. Oh sure, this is all Rauner’s fault.

Open your eyes: this is really Mike Madigan and the Senate Republican Leader he controls.

  28. Governor Radogno is doing Illinois proud.

Comment by Dome Gnome Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 11:36 am

  29. This is exactly what illinois needs.it will have to be the Republicans who stand up to Rauner.

Policy differences are one thing, but refusing to do your constitutional duty is not acceptable. The Republicans can’t continue to let the governor’s contempt for the rules define them.

  30. Leader Radagno, I applaud your courage and your efforts to reach a budget agreement. The citizens of Illinois thank you!

  31. Good on Radogno!

I’ve always found her to be a more practical sort, so I’m not surprised that she’s fed up with some of the rhetoric. And if Madigan were ever foolhardy enough to so obviously attempt to derail the deal, then you best believe she’d get him too.

Also, I suspect as Rauner’s poll numbers sink further under water we might see more of this.

  33. Excellent and welcome signal from Radagno.

“…wherefore, let the bad faith of others serve you, not as example, but as warning. The peril of the situation lies in the unhinging of your own integrity, at the sight of such baseness of conduct: but the man (WOMAN) OF PRINCIPLE NEVER FORGETS WHAT SHE IS, BECAUSE OF WHAT OTHERS ARE.”

    Something to contemplate, ya?

  36. Maybe, just maybe, we might have an all female governor’s election in 2018. All of a sudden, the most visible women leaders of both parties are telling Rauner to stay out of their business and shut up…
