Pawar says he wants massive infrastructure plan

Posted in:

* Cass Herrington at Peoria Public Radio

Pawar’s policies also include universal childcare, equitable school funding and massive infrastructure projects that he calls “Illinois’ New Deal.” The idea is framed after President Franklin D Roosevelt’s infrastructure projects that followed the Great Depression.

“I know right here in Peoria, there’s about a billion dollars worth of lock and dam work. So, we have an opportunity to not only build out our intermodal facilities, but also do ecological and wildlife restoration and lock and dam work.”

Pawar says that project would put people to work, create jobs downstream and create a “regional hub” for commerce on the Illinois River.

  1. Stuff like the lock and dam work is Federal …

I realize this is primary talk, but any candidate needs to be careful how far left they go; don’t want to get too far out on a limb because they will need to be more moderate in the general.

  2. If Trump & the Tea Party have their way, stuff like the lock and dam work will become state funded like everything else that is currently federally funded.

  3. It’s certainly a more direct way to create jobs than anything Rauner is proposing, and the secondary effects will be plenty pro-business.

  4. I’m proposing that we build a wall along the state’s eastern border, western border, northern border and that little tip in the south to keep in all the residents and businesses that are having any thoughts about leaving the state because of the fiscal disaster. These will be great walls built and paid for by former Illinois businesses that have moved to Indiana, Wisconsin, Missouri and Iowa.

  5. Lock and dam work?

Might want to check the navigable servitude clause of the Constitution. And don’t float ideas on which you literally could never deliver.

  7. FDR is as a failure when it came to addressing the Great Depression. Trying to emulate him won’t help Illinois especially when we’re not allowed to do deficit spending like the Feds. (I know, that’s not really stopping anyone in Springfield.)

  8. Pawar know he can’t be governor without Big Contruction campaign dollars. This is how you get them.

I think this announcement show political maturity on Pawar’s part.

It appears you’re not joking and that this statement is presented as sincere.
It shows something, but political maturity isn’t what comes to mind.

  10. The WPA didn’t pay prevailing wage. Just sayin.

  11. To address infrastructure is a good idea. To burden the taxpayers with a billion dollar project that is not even in the state domain, is to leave a billion dollars worth of unmet needs in infrastructure that the state is actually responsible for.

  12. – FDR is as a failure when it came to addressing the Great Depression.–

LOL, but when when Planet Earth was choosing up sides or getting rolled by the totalitarians as a result of The Depression, he did a pretty swell job of preserving democracy here.

LOL! I think we all yearn for sensible “primary seasons” here in Illinois. But the reality is we don’t have anything close to resembling that.

Hate the game, not the player.

Kudos to Pawar for playing the game properly.

Appreciate the confirmation we’re speaking of a game and not real government. Oy.

WWII mobilization was just the New Deal on steroids.
