Finally, a bit of good Illinois news

* Press release…

In an effort to keep Americans safer on the roads this year, BackgroundChecks.org researched state DUI rankings. BackgroundChecks.org used a combination of CDC, Department of Transportation data, and local state data, to create a comprehensive score for each state.

The top 10 states with the worst DUI problems in America are Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, South Carolina, Mississippi, New Mexico, Kentucky, and Maine.

The 10 states with the least DUI Problems are: New York, Massachusetts, Illinois, New Jersey, Utah, Rhode Island, Virginia, Indiana, Washington, and Kansas.

“The fact that over 10,000 people a year die from DUI related accidents is a travesty”, said Trent Wilson, co-author of the research. “We hope this research will open some eyes and make people think twice before drinking and driving.”

  1. A lot of Illinoisans are too broke to buy drinks and a lot of the places that they would drive to have gone out of business.

  3. Here’s a strange thought. I wonder if the rise of Uber/Lyft etc has decreased this stat? Just a thought.

  4. CPD and State police in Chicago area have bigger issues and DUI is not one of them. In general police stops have come to a halt. Policing has changed dramatically. You could save a baby from a fire as a police officer and get sued. Terrrible profession and thankless job especially in Chicago. CPD officers are doing less because of the liability and big risk the profession.
Cops finally get it. It is about there families , there health physically and mentally and just peace of mind.

  7. Having easy access in many areas of our state to public transportation, taxis and ride sharing helps.

  8. DUIs down and our ranking there is a good thing. But, Distracted Driving is rapidly replacing DUI as a fatality cause in Illinois…

  9. Riding sharing (Uber and Lyft) have probably helped dramatically. Outside of the cities, many people did not have the option to call for a ride at reasonable prices. Now, living in the suburbs, you often find a packed bar and half full parking lot because most patrons used a ride share app. I feel much safer on the roads now in these areas at night.

  10. Adding to the national pain, drug overdoses are responsible for roughly five times more deaths than DUI’s.

  11. Be sure to weigh in again after your first forced catheterization. It’s for the children or awareness or something

  12. Are we suffering from having fewer state police?

Are we sure this just isn’t an enforcement issue?

Take it from a poster living in Southern Illinois, but uh, driving drunk is a pretty regular thing down in these parts.

  13. Thought wisconsin would be #1..For years a dui was a simple ticket.. It’s not uncommon for someone to have 10 dui’s in cheese land.

  14. This is due to the use of Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Devices (BAIID), initiated years ago by a pilot program enacted by former Reps. Clem Balanoff & Tim Sheehy, later expanded by Sen. Cullerton.

Under the old law, almost everyone stopped for DUIs lost their DL for some time. Now, everyone can continue to drive thru their summary suspension by installing a BAIID, forcing them to blow into it & prove they’re not drunk before starting the car

If all or almost all suspensions & revocations were replaced with BAIIDs, we’d be even safer, as folks, who lose their DL, usually drive illegally, & sometimes drunk. If allowed to drive legally with a BAIID, they’d be stopped from driving drunk!

  15. A problem that is being brought to light in several downstate ISP districts (and gloriously revealed on Facebook) is ridiculous speeding. Some nitwit in a yellow Lambo got nailed going 144 in a 65 literally right in front of the Collinsville HQ. Over Champaign way, they nailed 5 speeders over 95 in one weekend.
I’m gratified by the DUI decrease, but these nitwits have to be stopped. FWIW, 25 over is a Class A misdemeanor, minimum $2500 fine.
Oh, the prize goes to an idiot from Indiana who wanted to see what his Challenger Hellcat would do; he found out. 156 in a 55 on the Indiana Toll Road.
