Ones who believe that crisis creates leverage and that Rauner’s agenda will benefit the State in the long-term. They are fine with short-medium term pain, even with some casualties.

For someone to believe the state is heading in the right direction, they would have to believe or have faith in the person(s) who can control the future of the state. Though there’s a lot of blame to go around, the one who is supposed to be the man at the top is Governor Rauner. I suspect those who believe the state is heading in the right direction are very partisan Republicans. As to who would be undecided, I could only imagine it’s someone either who is very open-minded and patient or, more likely, someone who pays no attention to the day-by-day politics and is unaware of the major players and their positions (or in denial about said positions).

It’s possible that a respondent could be a strong Rauner supporter and believe the act of electing Rauner will eventually mean that the state improves and therefore think that it’s going to get worse before it gets better but it’s ultimately on the path to get better. I don’t agree with that sentiment but I can see how someone might think that.
Undecideds are just people who don’t pay much attention to the news.

Right direction? Person (persons) who give loans to vectors and such and make money off the the eventual payments made, with interest… to them.
Undecided? College seniors with a tech job offer in Chicago metro, including a signing bonus, who is also single, no kids, and limited college debt.

It’s really hard to answer the question. All I can say is that we need to remember that we here at the CapFax are the nerds. We pay attention to everything. So I guess I would say that people that don’t pay close attention may think the state is on the right track or be undecided. But I also know plenty of people who don’t pay attention to anything that would always say ‘wrong track’ no matter the question.

I think Rauner is the sort of person who thinks the state is headed in the right direction. To describe more completely, that would be a person who is committed to the Laffer curve to the point of being unable to even acknowledge that actual human beings exist in the real world that exists every day (as opposed to some theoretical future world.) That’s an out-of-touch person who is dismissive of the “short term” pain/suffering/death, both economic and human, that not having a budget for 2 1/2 years causes. And, that could also a person who is cool with lying and telling different stories depending on who they’re talking to on issues ranging from taxes to abortion.
I think the sort of person who is undecided falls into two camps. The first is the person who just cannot bring themselves to believe or admit that they were duped. Admitting you were gullible enough to be tricked is very uncomfortable. The second is the person who is not paying attention.

“Right Direction” people = have no friends or family members who need social services.
They pay their taxes.
Think they are totally self-sufficient and they expect/get/need nothing from Government. Generally not overly concerned with the details of Government or anything else.
Oversimplify situations.
Of course these folks just haven’t personally experienced any consequences yet.
They won’t start understanding the effects of our condition until roads and bridges collapse, their kids/grandkids schools don’t open or buses don’t run or the football team doesn’t play, their neighbor’s business fails and they put their house up for sale.
Then (maybe) they’ll start asking questions and caring.
As long as the tragic effects of our situation are just 1 or 2 people here or there and not anyone these people know this Governor is going to be able to sweep his record under the rug and these folks will shrug things off and think BVR’s doing a great job.
(And yes, I know Madigan is part of the problem too - but I don’t live in his district so I can’t do anything about that. This Governor has made it clear that unlike all his predecessors he cannot govern effectively with other elected officials so I can and will vote against him.)

Bond buyers looking for higher rates of return on their investments than can be provided in more fiscally responsible jurisdictions, Cubs fans who pay attention to nothing else, and Evelyn Sanguinetti who has been provided an employment opportunity that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.

The few remaining statehouse reporters torn between the heartbreaking destruction of the state they love and record interest in their work they haven’t seen since the final months of the Blagojevich administration.

Those who believe the state is heading in the right direction are those who want to get their agenda passed by whatever means necessary, and/or to so utterly destroy the state that the only viable alternative is destruction of the unions through bankruptcy of a variety of state entities.
Those who believe the state is headed in the wrong direction believe in collaborative government; where blackmail doesn’t have a place; where in collaboration, you do what is doable, putting the greater interests of Illinois citizens ahead of yourself and your agenda.
Those who are undecided are either in a coma, or should be.

The only people who think the state is going in the right direction would be elected democrats and their supporters who resist any changes to state government or our business environment.
Governor Rauner clearly does not think the state is going in the right direction because he proposed a Turnaround Agenda, that has been largely ignored.
Democrats have no competing agenda, so they must like the direction we are headed currently.
They could change that perception by using their huge majorities in the legislature to pass popular legislation for economic development and daring the Governor to veto the legislation.
The fact they have not proves they like the direction Illinois is headed. Their actions confirm this.

Undecided - People who are not paying attention
Who in there right mind can look at any republican and blame what’s going on now with our fiscal problems on them? Chicago hasn’t had meaningful republican representation in over a hundred years and look at the problems they have. The state has followed suit for the past 30 years and is now experiencing similar problems. Moreover, we have Michigan and the city of Detroit not too far away and we can see what democratic party elected officials can do to a state in the long run. How- just how delusional and twisted does your logic have to be to justify not putting 100% of the blame on democrats here? And the answer to the issue is belt tightening. We are at the limit of taxation of the populace and unless we are going to tax cars by the mile and air by the breath, we’re running out of options. You have to give republicans control of the state and city at all levels (which will never happen - I know) and let them be the bad guys for a while so they can cut social services, privatize public jobs, reign in school districts and generally reduce the scope and cost of governance….

Of course not, that is why the Governor want to turnaround the direction we are headed. Dems are resisting they like it as is
Skyrocketing property taxes, record unfunded pension debt, manufacturing leaving the state, record out migration, lowest faith in state government in America. That is what Dems are defending, they have no plans to reverse any of these.
Dems have zero messaging. They are not advocating turning around anything , they like the direction we are headed.

Jim Edgar did in fact have a republican controlled house from 1995-1997. You know what they did? They got Term Limits on the ballot only to get the democratic appointed judiciary to take it off the ballot before we could vote on it. And the Lawyer who did it was Michael Kasper, a longtime associate of House Speaker Mike Madigan.

… and yet, Rauner with the same parameters can’t get anything done, only asking Dems to vote to destroy labor by ending both collective bargaining and prevailing wage, and requiring Dems to propose all cuts, sponsor the tax increase to pay for a budget, so Rauner can… destroy labor, blame all the cuts and taxes on Dems, so Rauner will pay social services what they’re owed and save higher education.
Where is the compromise?

To believe that the state is going in the right direction you should believe three things. 1. Public unions should be eliminated, 2. State funded social welfare programs on balance do more harm than good. They do this by supporting dysfunctional families and rewarding bad behavior. 3. State subsidies for higher education lead people into getting degrees that are not useful. People who pay their own way focus on getting the best bang for their buck.

I continue to be amazed at the ongoing debate between the folks who can tell the difference between bad and worse, and those who seem willfully unable to do so. The decades of financial mismanagement by both parties were a slow smoldering fire destroying our state. The ongoing impasse has been a rapidly growing wildfire that’s destroying our state at an unprecedented pace.

This poll lines up pretty well with my own reality. It’s anecdotal, but my law enforcement unit has 10 people in it. The last election, 7 out of the 10 (me included) voted for Rauner. Now, there are only 2 out of the 10 that are going to vote for Gov Beernuts in 2018 (the two are extreme partisans who think Trump is doing a great job). When 80% of a law enforcement unit is voting against the Republican candidate, you’ve got problems.

I too am sick and tired of paying for safe roads, strong bridges, schools to educate our young citizens, police, fire protection, sewage/sanitation, public transit, building codes/inspectors, state troopers, child investigative services, auditors to oversee funds, libraries/librarians to promote literacy and knowledge-sharing, clean drinking water, and on and on. But, puhleeeze, don’t get me started on my tax dollars going to support higher education, which trains workers, fuels job growth, and which in myriad ways creates and enhances a world worth “private citizenry” living in. Yeah, and while we’re at it, let’s dump these public unions, made up entirely of fellow taxpayers, who contribute to our society — making it livable — and better (even in these troubled times) than most places in the entire world. Bruce Rauner is approving of this. He said so. He’s never been happier in his life.
Who are undecided? Possibly some who aren’t hurting very badly and don’t follow politics. There are many people who are doing just fine in Illinois.

In 2014, trial lawyers opposed to the retention of Illinois Supreme Court Justice Lloyd Karmeier spent roughly $2 million to defeat him. The Republican State Leadership Committee, a national political committee supporting candidates for state office, spent nearly $1 million to help Karmeier, who narrowly won retention. most people would probably agree that special interest groups donating 2 million for judicial elections would fit the definition of a corrupt system.
Does that sound like an independent judiciary? Only in the Orwellian sense

Even the Republican Illinois justices are corrupt.
Hmm. That’s a lot of corruption. It’s like Rauner says the judge that ruled in his favor on one thing, corrupt when the same judge rules against Rauner?
Is that how it goes?

Question one- Admissions officers at surrounding state universities that are experiencing banner years because of all the students from Illinois who are leaving the state.

-Killing off Public Unions is a must-
It always good to recognize the reality of life in Illinois, as such, we live in a corrupt democrat machine state. If we get rid of public unions, every government job becomes a gift from the elected official that oversees that public service. I would get rid of the unions too, but beware of the re-entrenchment that would create.
