* We talked yesterday about a question posted by Edward Hadnott during Gov. Rauner’s Facebook Live event…
What happened to the art of compromise? I know its not perfect but I feel that you, Madigan and Cullerton should work out a budget where the people win. I feel that you, Madigan and Cullerton let your ego’s get in the way of progress. Remember you, Madigan and Cullerton were elected by the people. Serve the people period.
The governor only read the first sentence, then gave a long, rambling response that appeared to indicate Democrats needed to compromise with him, not the other way around.

It got me to thinking that I’d rather hear more of what Hadnott had to say than to listen to another day of everyone blaming each other in Springfield, so I tracked him down. […]
Some of you are saying “Amen,” [about Rauner’s response] and some are wondering how anybody could compromise with a fellow with that kind of tin ear. […]
[Hadnott’s] premise is simple: “I feel like three reasonable people should be able to sit down and work this out. It wouldn’t be perfect. But it would be better.”
“You can’t just have it all your way,” Hadnott said.
“In a compromise, I get A, B and C, and you get D, E and F. They keep saying win-lose. I’m a big believer in win-win.
I think that’s how a lot of people see it, and while those of us who follow these matters closely might get bogged down on the details, Hadnott is expressing the essence of the common man’s frustration over living in a state now on Day 694 without a budget.”
Hadnott also said that while he believes the governor is interested in finding a middle ground, he ought to stop talking so much about the past: “No one wants to hear about the past mistakes. The issue is where do we go from here?”

Great follow up by Brown, it gives a greater context and understanding of the question, and the hope after hearing the Rauner response.
As long as Rauner can convince voters he wants a deal (wether that is real or not?) then Rauner is 100% correct. Rauner is winning.
Parlay this with unkind headlines of “Senate Dems Raise Taxes”, Rauner’s window to re-elect stays open enough for Rauner to climb on thru.
Give Brown’s column a click, but give it a good read too. It’s a snapshot also of a voter and how voterS may see all this outside the political bubble.

Middle ground but no property tax freeze, workers comp reform, redistricting or term limits.
Just a return to the Quinn income tax rates, although these are retroactive and permanent, with added service taxes but no corresponding property tax reform because that would aggravate Democrats campaign donors

Lucky, the Governor was given a two year property tax freeze, which was his original request in his turnaround agenda.
He was given pension reform.
He was given procurement reform.
He was given workers comp reform that had meaningful savings, but rejected it because he just had to have something in there for ideological purposes with no quantifiable savings.
He was given term limits on legislative leaders. (And lets be real, the main reason that term limits are an issue are because of Madigan. For everyone else there has been some fairly significant turnover.)
What did the Dems “get”? Education funding reform?

Trump just unveiled his unbalanced budget that has over $1 trillion in mystery revenue.
States including Illinois will get much less money from the Feds under Trump’s plan.
Freezing property taxes and cutting business taxes will only create more catastrophic cuts for programs for the vulnerable.
It’s the middle-class that will bear this burden while the inequality gap will continue to grow.
Oligarchs in America.

I still believe in “the other side of the coin”, otherwise I either have wrote it as a possibility.
The real question, the blunt, honest question is “will Dems finally engage in the millions and the message to make the coin flip?”
Again, Mike Noonan ain’t wrong.
If the goal is to defeat Rauner and save Illinois by doing so… Noonan ain’t wrong.
Ya gotta actively flip that coin.

Rauner won’t compromise because doing so could look like a win for his enemies. If he compromises, he can’t fingerpoint at others, blaming our fiscal crisis on his enemies. So he won’t.
He sold voters on him by blaming his enemies as the cause of all our ills. Consequently, Rauner can’t let them win - anything.
Rauner doesn’t see himself as a loser, as long as his enemies don’t win.

Brown is one of only a handful of Chicago-based reporters or columnists who actually “gets” Springfield.
I watched an episode of Chicago Week in Review on Channel 11 a few weeks ago and was astounded by the panelists’ cluelessness about statehouse politics.
So yeah, I’m with Rich. Let’s run-up Brown’s page view count.

If you don’t veer away from your past mistakes and just keep repeating them you are destined to future failure. Just raising taxes will not solve the underlying problems that plaque Illinois. He wouldn’t need to keep bringing up the past if there was any indication that the Democrats were open to changes in the future.

The problem with billionaires is that they’re not used to anyone telling them “no.”
Two of the things children learn in elementary school are “share” and “teamwork.” Governor Rauner seemed to miss those lessons somewhere along the way. What would be so bad about sharing a win for the state of Illinois through teamwork with the Speaker and legislature?
But I suppose that would force him to act like Mr. Hadnott: reasonable.

No, a politican would be twisting arms and cutting (back room) deals to achieve what is doable.
Rauner is try to wield his power like a CEO of a business he fully owns that has a Board of Directors packed with his cronies.
The problem is Rauner doesn’t fully own the State’s board, the General Assembly, and he doesn’t own the business regulators, the court system.
Rauner keeps acting like he had 100% control when, in truth, he only has about 35% - 40% control, if that much.

Honeybear, OW is not a conservative. You are clearly a liberal though.
I don’t get the point about no dialogue. Rauner has clearly moved to the middle, the Speaker has not budged.
Liberals believe in government action to achieve equal opportunity and equality for all. It is the duty of the government to alleviate social ills and to protect civil liberties and individual and human rights. Believe the role of the government should be to guarantee that no one is in need. Liberal policies generally emphasize the need for the government to solve problems
.Conservatives believe in personal responsibility, limited government, free markets, individual liberty, traditional American values and a strong national defense. Believe the role of government should be to provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own goals. Conservative policies generally emphasize empowerment of the individual to solve problems.
Liberal
A market system in which government regulates the economy is best. Government must protect citizens from the greed of big business. Unlike the private sector, the government is motivated by public interest. Government regulation in all areas of the economy is needed to level the playing field.
Conservative
The free market system, competitive capitalism, and private enterprise create the greatest opportunity and the highest standard of living for all. Free markets produce more economic growth, more jobs and higher standards of living than those systems burdened by excessive government regulation.

It’s those like Edgar, for a simple example, that may agree, disagree, neutral to a policy, the listening and trying to understand the other side, that’s what leads to “win-win” and compromise.
Rauner’s own response heard little of the question, but first made sure blame and message was the premise for his own end game, not a window to compromise.
I’d like to think Rauner and Raunerites are the anomaly. It’s just that Rauner and the Raunerites have the loudest megaphone.

And in my opinion. It is Trump who exposes the Republicans (and Rauner) more and more because he just doesnt have a filter and speaks his mind.

While I’m a moderate on some, not all social items framed politically, if you could show where I’m not a Republican, which I am, and not where you think I’m a conservative, which I don’t claim in any “traditional” sense, you’d have an argument.

LP, your term paper neglects to mention a key component of capitalism: paying your bills.
The system falls apart when bust out artists willfully run up billions in overdue bills they have no intention of paying.
Ten billion added to the backlog in two years, on a runaway train to break the $20B mark by the end of FY18.
Is that “conservative” or “liberal” in your list of dorm-room debate club banalities?

A person studying political and economic theory (not tactics) in grad school gets the same essential broad and neutral description of some of the differences between liberal and conservative thinking. When one actually takes the time to try to understand these basic differences in worldview and philosophy, then the idea that anyone who does not think exactly the way “I do” must be inherently and automatically stupid, evil, racist, irresponsible—pick the insult–is harder to justify in real life.

As for the merits? I have argued them. Constantly. I’ve argued against your argument that the Governor is the victim in all of this (he’s not). I’ve argued against your continual assertions that the Governor is the only one compromising (he’s not).
I happen to think Mr. Hadnott hit it right on the nose when he said: “”It wouldn’t be perfect. But it would be better.” You want my argument? That’s my argument. Anything would be better than what’s going on now.

LP, a couple of weeks ago you told us CAT was expanding everywhere but Illinois. And that the state was on the hook for IMRF pensions. And school districts were on the hook for TRS pensions.

I am frustrated and bewildered why the DEMS cede the field every day.
But I’m just a front ranker. I just hope somebody has a plan. In the mean time we (my Local) are training up and preparing.

Do you think CAT is pleased with the Illinois business environment and the CEO did not say he would expand in other states until our Workers Comp is fixed
OW, the GA has been in session since January, They have passed zero substantive legislation to fix Illinois problems. But you blame the Governor exclusively for the problems and neglect to mention the destruction Democratic policies have caused Illinois
