RIP Gregg Allman, another sad loss. Those first few Allman Brothers Band albums were huge in my life. Their first album blew me away. “Whipping Post” is one of their masterpieces, as are so many others.

Gregg made it to 69. Salud on a good life, playing with house money for a long, long time.

Back in the late 80s in the Quads, I covered a show Gregg and his solo band did at the old bandshell in beautiful LeClaire Park on the Mississippi.

Koko Taylor was the opener. A few off-duty Davenport dicks were providing security.

Before Gregg showed up at the bandshell, a couple of his crew asked me if the dicks were “cool.”

It being the 80s, I knew what “cool” meant. I said yes, “medium cool, with some respectful discretion.”

After that, roadies started popping a bunch of Pulp Fiction briefcases and the party began.
