*** UPDATED x1 *** Rauner now claims he favors Manar’s education funding bill

Posted in:

* Appearing on WBEZ again today, Gov. Rauner talked about education funding reform legislation

A good Democrat bill got introduced in the Senate and a good Republican bill got introduced in the Senate. I support either of those bills. They were good bills.

The governor went on to call the House’s version, which ended up passing, a Chicago bailout.

* But let’s go back to when Democratic Sen. Andy Manar passed his own version out of the Senate…

The Rauner Administration released the following statement regarding the Senate’s passage of SB1. The following is attributable to Illinois Secretary of Education Beth Purvis

“This bill is not consistent with the framework of the bipartisan, bicameral School Funding Commission. Senator Manar abandoned our bipartisan process, departing from agreements already finalized in the commission and forcing a Chicago bailout at the expense of every other school district in the state, some of which are in worse financial straits than CPS.”

As a result, not a single Senate Republican voted for the bill.

* Rauner also told WTTW yesterday that he could support Manar’s bill “with very minor tweaks.” But Purvis’s May 17th statement belies that comment.

He’s rewriting history and he’s getting away with it.

*** UPDATE ***  From the governor’s office…

The governor was referring to Andy Manar’s SB 1, Senate Amendment 3 which he believes can be the basis to a compromise. The governor believes that there is a good place for compromise between Sen. Barickman’s SB 1124 and Sen. Manar’s SB1, Senate Amendment 3. The governor also believes that the conversations that were occurring between House Republicans and Will Davis just hours prior to floor Amendment 1 being filed could lead to a school funding formula with reforms that everyone could celebrate.

  1. Bruce Rauner’s Alternate Reality Tour does not require intellectual consistency. In fact, it is preferred if you don’t bring any.

  2. Why, it’s almost as though he altered him statement because he’s on a Chicago news station.

  3. Guys like Rauner and Trump lie so much, so easily, it’s like instinct to them. And they get away with it. Credibility and integrity are apparently the capital of losers.

  4. I saw that WTTW interview last night and I was screaming at the TV: “You were against Manar’s bill in the Senate!!!!”

I kept hoping the usually reliable Amanda Vinicky would call him out, but she didn’t. Or if she did it ended up being edited out.

  5. AKA lying.

Sometimes, with this guy, it seems like lying is the objective in and of itself. Issues large and small, all the time.

  6. agreed.

What exactly was added in the House, and why, and why did the Senate not think it needed included?

Do all roads lead to Madigan and too much Chicago influence?

  7. If he is for it, “with just some tweaks”, then he could sign it and do a trailer bill! I repeat, if he is for it, sign it, do a trailer bill for your tweaks.

  8. ===He’s rewriting history and he’s getting away with it.===

You know what? I’m tired of seeing, finding, using, reading the hypocrisy Rauner has been getting away with, and you know what, it’s because Democrats, individually and in a collective are lazy to holding Rauner accountable, and you know what, it’s not a heavy lift to find quote after miserable quote where Rauner’s rank hypocrisy lays, and you know what, getting “owned” by being lazy to work that takes minutes to refute, and s decent platform to deliver it, that’s s pathetic way to claim to be “working to stop this”..,

Democrats, you are being pummeled daily by a guy that knows you won’t give 4-5 interns the ability and platform(s) to embarrass the flat out misinformation that Rauner and his Rauner Word Jumble operators know they can get away with because Democrats refuse, absolutely refuse, to dedicate a response to words and commevts like these… that Rauner will own the day for, because being lazy to honesty is Rauner’s willing formula.

Boy, Rauner plays the Dem’s lack of counter-messaging perfectly.

    {End Rant}

  11. I think team Rauner is coming to the realization that the House and Senate are sick of him moving the goal posts, and there is a real possibility no stop gap budget is passed to have K-12 funding for the next school year. By favoring Manar’s education funding bill there is hope he can put K-12 funding for next school year in a package deal.

Rauner is boxing himself in a corner, as much as he wants to blame Madigan majority of this is self-inflicted.

  12. I listened this morning and his recitation of alternative facts was so disturbing because Tony Sarabia doesn’t know any better. It’s so frustrating.

Comment by Chicago Cynic Friday, Jun 2, 17 @ 10:49 am

  13. The Dems should have a website that documents the bald faced lies that Rauner spouts multiple times every day. Why shouldn’t Rauner lie? It’s almost like the Dems are impotent. Where and Who are the Dems attack dogs.

  14. And under the bus go the republicans. The fickle mind of 1.4% has twisted again.

How would this change the funding bill?

  18. OW…that’s the maddening thing…Some basic messaging from the Dems would HELP both sides get an agreement.

  19. Cullerton, as usual, did a pretty good job of refuting Rauner’s statements when he got his turn this morning. https://www.wbez.org/shows/morning-shift/il-senate-president-on-state-of-the-state/c3114fc6-851e-4f1d-aa86-a7e89e776329

  21. Of course, Rauner was with Manar.

Next week’s announcement? Rauner was always encouraging Radogno to get that pesky Grand Bargain thingy done but she wasn’t quite up to it.

Comment by Deft Wing Friday, Jun 2, 17 @ 11:32 am

  22. LOL. I mean what else can you say.

It’s amazing that Rauner cannot get anything done. Nothing. Zero. Zip. Nada.

  23. - OW -

Can’t argue with you about the Dems’ awful messaging. But the dereliction of duty by the news media is a contributing factor to this mess. When Amanda Vinicky, one of a handful of Illinois reporters who actually understands Springfield, won’t push back against Rauner truth-bending spin, all hope is lost.

Comment by Roman Friday, Jun 2, 17 @ 11:45 am

  24. Rauner’s techniques are purposeful, they are the province of the autocrat. Say contradictory things and obliterate objective reality. The autocrat is the only reality.

Chicago Cynic: the reason Rauner is happy to go on Sarabia’s show every month is b/c he knows Sarabia doesn’t know enough or care enough to really hold him accountable and pin him down. It’s a big name “get” for BEZ and the show, and another chance for Rauner to sow his disinformation with the liberals who listen to the station.

Comment by Moe Berg Friday, Jun 2, 17 @ 11:46 am

  25. ===But the dereliction of duty by the news media is a contributing factor to this mess.===

Nope. Sorry. Very humbly and respectful to your argument, No.

Victims blame the press for a lack of coverage or “understanding how to report our message”

    Nope.

Absolutely refusing to engage in a proactive counter-messaging to Raunerism, even the vertical integration, with respect, honestly, no, that doesn’t fly with me.

    At all.

Doing nothing and expecting the Press to carry a message you refuse to make actively… Can’t blame the press.

  26. Holy Cow, Cullerton was on fire. That interview ought to be required listenin’ for every member of the House and Senate.

Comment by Mongo Friday, Jun 2, 17 @ 12:21 pm

  27. Roman and cynic - to piggyback on OW’s comment, not only should these reporters not have to be responsible for pushing back against the Gov’s dishonesty - what makes you think they actually CAN? Remember what happened to Dave McKinney when he pushed too hard on a story the Gov didn’t like? News station and newspaper owners are friends of the Governor! Would you be in such a big hurry to point out Rauners hypocrisy if it was going to get you fired? Others may poopoo the idea, but I firmly believe reporters in Illinois have a very short leash when it comes to assigning blame for this mess. Respectfully, I wouldn’t be so quick to blame people like Vinicky and Sarabia if I were you.

It’s maddening. It’s tiring too. I couldn’t take it anymore without a rant.
