* I’ve been tweeting about this new Bruce Rauner TV ad and I finally got it…
They’ve got that Madigan issue and that property tax issue and they’re sticking to ‘em and I don’t blame them. The stuff works. Not gonna help pass a budget, though.

Mike Madigan will do anything to keep power, even take down Illinois.
Madigan’s puppets blocked the budget, stopped property tax relief and now want to raise taxes by billions.
Madigan and his cronies reject reform, and let Illinois crumble.
We elected Bruce Rauner to reform Springfield. That’s why Rauner’s pushing a balanced budget and long-term property tax freeze to grow jobs. It’s a new path to save Illinois, because Rauner means reform.
It’s time we rebuild Illinois.

STATEMENT FROM ADAM COLLINS, SPOKESMAN FOR MAYOR RAHM EMANUEL
The last thing Illinois needs is the only thing we’ve gotten since Bruce Rauner took office, more TV ads and still no budget. The governor isn’t having a policy debate, he’s playing politics and the entire state is suffering as a result.
In the past six months alone he publicly said he supported a grand bargain, then privately killed it. He promised to veto an education funding bill that by his own calculations gets him 90 percent of what he wants. Then last week he called a special session to negotiate a budget with legislative leaders, and next week he’s going to launch an ad campaign attacking those same leaders.
The Governor needs to take the ad down, and finally put a budget up.
I’ve asked the mayor’s office if this applies to others running ads as well.

People deserve to know the truth about what is going on in Springfield. There’s a compromise budget in front of them. Now, it’s up to Speaker Madigan.

Cullerton also said new ads from Rauner’s campaign, attacking Madigan and Democrats, aren’t helpful if the goal is to achieve a compromise deal to end the state’s historic budget impasse.
“It’s like if you and your wife are trying to make some major decision in your life about where to send the kids to school or something like that and you’re sitting down to go negotiate, you don’t really want to start out by saying, ‘You know, before we start, I just want to let you know that I always really hated your mother,’” Cullerton said.

Running a statewide attack ad against a regional legislature is silly. Madigan is beloved in his own district, and untouchable. He also controls the Democrat coffers, and thus will stay as long as he wants. Rauner has no understanding of the “Big Game”, and his entire crew is an embarrassment.This is not needed if you truly want a deal in the near future.

Yet again, Rauner implies he opposes a tax increase when his own budget requires a tax increase. Sadly, this ad will be reasonably effective.

Clearly, they don’t.
Give Rauner credit for knowing what he wants and getting as much of it as he can. But recognize that he is thoroughly dishonest about his true objectives.
The guy is on record as saying he won’t take 90% to even begin mitigating the damage. The only conclusion you can draw is that the damage is the objective.

It’s an effective attack add. I think Trump will do more harm to Rauner than the budget impasse.
Expect one term governors, years of no budgets, and political turmoil for the next 30 years as local governmental bodies try to stop their inevitable defunding and demise, thanks to the pension mess.

Regardless of a GOP revenue bill, why is Madigan so afraid to raise taxes? To me, that is standard platform material for democrats–Bigger government, higher taxes.

This is THE key phrase in the ad. Yes, it’s easy to see that the reform has not materialized and that conditions in the state are beyond tenuous. But– the desire of many many voters has not shifted from their overarching concern that in order to save the state Springfield must be reformed. Until and unless some of Rauner’s multitude of Dem opponents can show that they understand this cris de coeur and are also reform minded (which they have not managed to display so far), this type of ad by he governor will continue to resonate with the general public.

But in the real world, in 2014, House Dems could not come up with 60 votes to extend the income tax increase although Madigan backed it and Quinn had pledged to sign it.

Madigan’s lack of integrity is a fundamental problem in this whole stand off.

… and yet Rauner polls 58% disapproval and polls behind a unnamed Dem.
This Ad is about squeezing the beast, no budget, and keeping a 35+% base engaged and hopeful and willing to stick around.
This isn’t about re-election. Today.

Yeah, that’s probably better than a spot that points out the GRF backlog of bills will have increased on Rauner’s watch by $25B by then.

Time and time again Rauner’s ads accuse Madigan of being the very thing that he is. Madigan’s puppets? The GOP Legislature, with the exception of Sam McCann, are Rauner’s puppets.
If there is no budget Madigan will be reelected if he runs again. It’s doubtful that Rauner will. Effective ad though because most of your average GOP voters in the state are clueless to what’s been going on in the Capitol. Rauner will need to get those Independent voters out for him though and he can’t run on his record. He has to convince the majority of voters that he isn’t responsible for this mess that has just happened to get much worse since he’s been Governor. That’s all he’s got, a ton of money to run his misinformation campaign against Madigan.

I thought Rauner was gonna shake and bring back, not be someone continuing “40 years” of doing the same thing.
I thought Rauner wanted compromise not confrontation.

First off, I don’t know of any other statewide office holders with negotiating ability on an actual budget who are running ads, so inquiring whether other *candidates* who have no official role will be asked to stop running ads is apples to oranges. This guy is the GOVERNOR. The other guy running ads is just a CANDIDATE. Governors are supposed to govern (”govern” is even the root of the word governor!). The other guy is just a candidate with no official role.
Second, -agree with whoever said GOP votes are going to be surprised in November 2018 when they can’t vote against Madigan.
JB isn’t my guy - I’m solidly in to Anyone But Governor Gaslight camp - but it’s pretty obvious the frat house is scared to death of the guy and his money. It’s embarrassing for them.

Bruce Rauner has been Governor of Illinois for 2 years, 5 months and 7 days. In that time, the state’s backlog of unpaid bill has grown by around NINE BILLION dollars.
Rauner’s path isn’t new — and it has lead Illinois to ruin.

Madigan’s biggest failure over the past two years is the failure to propose a counter narrative. No economic development plans presented to grow Illinois economy and stop out migration. DO they really believe our state does not need to change anything?
Madigan and his cronies reject reform and let Illinois crumble. It is true that they have rejected any reforms and are perfectly happy with workers comp, property taxes etc as is.
They believe all that is needed to fix Illinois is a tax hike but lack the votes to pass one without passing some reforms that will help grow Illinois economy with it

This is as good as it gets to move it out of the political prism Rauner wants “taxpayers” to see, but highlights, honestly, what everyone can see, and in some cases relate to, in their own lives and understand what Rauner is actually doing.
Reality?
It’s really good. However, Rauner has ads for “taxpayers” to secure his 31-38% base, and Rauner can care less what he’s doing… because not ONE ad or pushback exists to counter the relentless ads.
It’s great, it’s perfect, it’s humorlessly framed like your favorite sitcom… if people read it.

Rauner said just the other day that we should stop campaigning, then like the very next day I see Rauner’s anti-Madigan commercial as a news item on WGN TV. Even the anchor seemed taken aback, like what is Rauner doing attacking Madigan at this critical time.

If the reforms would have so little effect on the economy and democratic special interest groups why have they been stonewalled for 2 1/2 years?
Perhaps because they would make a tremendous difference and would be difficult to roll back once implemented.
Rauner’s reforms are popular with bipartisan majorities of voters, if they weren’t the bills would have been called in the House and soundly rejected.
The fact that the Speaker was afraid to avoid having his fingerprints on the no votes is telling.
If the Democrats agenda was popular they would have passed it and dared the Governor to veto at his peril. There failure to do so is also telling

Popularity never guarantees sound policy. They are not linked as true if one is true the other, is in fact, true.
Fair maps and term limits have zero mathematical effect on a budget, nor do any budgetary glossaries, practices, or procedures include the necessity of term limits or fair maps in the history of budgets, ever. A want is not a requirement.

You KNOW this. In compete honestly to a conversation, you know this.
If Rauner is going to veto that budget, with the Democratic Only tax increase, and Rauner’s $50+ million at the ready… and NO 71 and 36 to override… Why would Madigan feel boxed?

LP, you sound like a broken record. (Ha! You see what I did there?) We’re still waiting for either (a) Admission from you that Rauner is at least partly at fault for this impaase, and/or (b) Some sort of actual facts that show the TA will have an actual positive economic impact. But since all you’re capable of is “But, Madigan!” I’m not holding my breath. Please, prove me wrong.

Madigan is the Pelosi of Illinois GOP strategy. Meaining that since the Republicans have no policies that actually help anyone but the .1 percent at the expense of the middle class, they need a demon to attach to any Democrat running against any “I got nothin but squeeze the beast” Republican.

Property Tax Reform - Zero help for Illinois ability to pay the tripled billions of dollars in state bills that Rauner has run up during his blackmail campaign to force his extreme right “reforms” on the citizens of Illinois, which, by his own admission to Rich, only amount to 500 million in savings. In pursuit of those demands, he has wrecked the social services sector and the higher education sector of Illinois, and tripled the backlog of unpaid private sector Illinois bills. His executive branch continued trashing of Illinois is outrageous. Our own governor’s departments trashing his state is unreal.
Since the senate has passed Rauner’s budget as put up by the brave Senateor Radogno, the house needs to take that up, along with massive support on the revenue bill by the Republicans that will not only meet the dire need to pass it, to the ability to override a Rauner (Koch/Alex) veto.

If Speaker Madigan means what he says- the budget impasse requires a balanced approach of cuts and revenues why would he say no to Rauner’s cuts if they were only 500 million in exchange for a 5 billion dollar tax increase?
