What if the Gov called a #SpecialSession and many of the senators didn't bother to show up on time? pic.twitter.com/0iNQxbTWrB

  1. Ouch Harsh. I get it, but it’s a terrible optic.

Comment by Lt Guv Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 12:24 pm

  2. They passed their bill. The rest is just PR and yea, not a great optic.

Comment by Chicago Cynic Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 12:25 pm

  3. I don’t know Senators by sight, are the 20 senators Republicans, Democrats, or both? I would assume Republican.

Comment by Perrid Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 12:28 pm

  4. Having a full Senate isn’t going to make the House act any faster.

Plus, think of the per diem money we’re saving.

    Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 12:28 pm

  5. So no per diem or pay for the rest, right?

Comment by Thoughts Matter Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 12:28 pm

  6. I often marvel at the lack of accountability in government. Try being late or a no-show in the private sector.

Comment by Streator Curmudgeon Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 12:30 pm

  7. cheap shot. That’s what the floor looks like during the prayer and pledge every regular session day. There is never, ever, ever, a full floor at the gavel in. That’s what the announcement of “senators within the sound of my voice please report to the floor for substantive action.”

The substantive action is in the House.

Comment by Sideline Watcher Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 12:31 pm

  8. Unreal. Just unreal.

Comment by Rocky Rosi Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 12:31 pm

  9. And if they actually covered Springfield, they’d know that.

Comment by Sideline Watcher Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 12:33 pm

  10. At least no one is playing… Candy Crush?

    Is it too soon?

I’m calling this the “Special Session of the Empty Chambers”

    Something, something, Harry Potter, Something.

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 12:39 pm

  11. Those look like mostly dems. Rep looks empty. It’s true, they bar entry during the prayer and pledge.

Comment by Fred Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 12:40 pm

  12. ===At least no one is playing… Candy Crush? ===

    Yet.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 12:41 pm

  13. Phonier than Rauner’s smile in the unity speech.

Gov. Gaslight purposely put us in a crisis that he himself called unnecessary but yeah, let’s knock the Senate for not being there to say the pledge like this is second grade.

    Dishonest, disingenuous and downright smarmy.

Comment by Dick Butka Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 12:45 pm

  14. “The legislative bus trip to Indiana for Lottery Tickets departs in 10 minutes.”

    Maybe?

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 12:49 pm

  15. The ship has sailed, this state aint coming back. 2 families within a block of me are moving out of state soon. Tax and spend, spend and tax won’t work.

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 12:50 pm

  16. Usually Mary Ann is better than this. Disappointing.

Where is the pic of the House. All the senate bills are over there. Truthfully there is no way to only call one chamber into special session. That’s why they both have to be in. But everyone knows the Senate finished their work by the May 31 adjournment. The House didn’t even bother to stay in until they were done. They took a whole week off in MAY of all months, and then adjourned by 5 or 6 on May 31 without taking up any budget bills. This is a really cheap shot on the Senate.

Comment by Sideline Watcher Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 12:52 pm

  17. I really hate this disingenuous type of reporting. This is what it looks like during the pledge and invocation 90% of the time, as noted above. Do. Better. Don’t go for the quick and dirty clicks, try harder.

Stop it with the “but this looks bad, that’s why I’m reporting it! People are saying…” It is your job to provide context and background for what happens. Sure, report what the “people are saying” but provide MORE than that. (It would also be helpful to include WHO is saying WHAT and WHY)

Comment by Moon Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 12:54 pm

  18. Ok..

tax and spend, spend and tax…

That’s called legislate and appropriate. It’s also called a budget. Revenue and Appropriations.

Or work: you make money, so you can go spend your money. Same thing.

Comment by Sideline Watcher Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 12:54 pm

  19. === But everyone knows the Senate finished their work by the May 31 adjournment===

No, they didn’t. Their budget did not address the bill backlog at all. And they pulled out of a workers’ comp agreement. Lots of work left to do.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 12:55 pm

  20. ===This is what it looks like during the pledge and invocation 90% of the time===

Did you miss the last pic from the end of the day’s special session?

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 12:56 pm

  21. And I am laughing at the “started 10 min late” part. For the Senate, that is AMAZINGLY on time.

Comment by Moon Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 12:57 pm

  22. bill backlog

SB4 passed May 17, 36-15-6. No republican votes. 7 billion in backlog bills. Trotter bill.

They also sent a Workers Comp bill, that can be amended in the House like all the other ones. Not sure if that was on a HB or SB tho.

All the budget vehicles are in the House.

  23. Springfield Mass Transit isn’t very reliable…probably all still waiting for their bus…

    Comment by d.p.gumby Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 1:08 pm

  24. Looks like my classroom the week before Thanksgiving

Comment by filmmaker prof Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 1:13 pm

  25. Mary Ann did the citizens of this state a service. Does anybody not see why this looks so bad? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

Comment by Responsa Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 1:30 pm

  26. Sideline, tax and spend(spend waaaay too much), spend and tax(tax waaaay too much)

    Better?

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 1:41 pm

  27. $48,000 per day. I’d be fired.

Comment by So ILL Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 2:37 pm

  28. Senate President: The Clerk will call the roll.
    Clerk: (calls the roll).
Clerk: Mr. President, the roll has been called and there are not enough members present for a quorum to conduct business.
Senate President: There being less than the number of Senators present for a quorum, the Senate stands at recess until the next special session tomorrow morning at 10:00 am.

Comment by Huh? Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 2:55 pm

  29. I can understand Mary Ann’s frustration. I mean she’s been camped out in Springfield diligently covering all 700-some days of this impasse.
    Right?

Comment by Michelle Flaherty Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 3:03 pm

  30. I get the Senate’s “we did our job meme,” but If they don’t at the very least engage in some show biz the next few days (like the House is) or they can expect more of this.

    Comment by Anon @ 3:32 Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 3:32 pm

  31. The Dem Senators know Rauner will veto every BUDGET they give him.

Comment by Mama Thursday, Jun 22, 17 @ 5:30 pm

  32. Sideline, tax and spend(spend waaaay too much), spend and tax(tax waaaay too much)

    Better?

No. That totally depends on what. Education? Not enough. After school programs? Not enough. Tax cuts for major corps that already don’t pay any imcome tax passing that burden down to the rest of us…way too much. Tax? Broaden the base. Our structural problems are because we don’t tax a wide enough base for our arbitrarily low flat tax. But my point is that tax and spend is the actual job of a legislator.
