* I’ve already told subscribers about this new TV ad buy, so I’ll just post it here without much comment. First, the press release…
A new effort, entitled Do Your Job, Inc., is on the air with a new ad calling on Governor Rauner to do his job and end the budget crisis.
The ad, entitled “The Brink”, features the words of former Republican Governor Jim Edgar. In the ad, which begins airing today, Edgar declares that Illinois is in the worst condition he can ever remember including the state’s tenure during disgraced former Governor Rod Blagojevich. The ad then encourages voters to call Governor Bruce Rauner and tell him to do his job as the state reaches the brink.
Do Your Job Inc is led by IL Sen. Mike Hastings of South Suburban Cook County, IL Rep. Lou Lang of Skokie and Illinois AFL-CIO President Michael T. Carrigan. “The Brink” will run in conjunction with the legislature’s special session schedule in hopes of helping to secure a budget.
“For two and a half years, Bruce Rauner has been able to hide behind ads blaming everyone but himself for the state’s fiscal condition. Meanwhile, the Illinoisans most affected by the Governor’s inaction - domestic violence victims, seniors who’ve lost healthcare, and women who can’t get breast cancer screenings - haven’t had a voice on the airwaves. That changed today. Our first ad gives voters the opportunity to hear directly from a former republican governor as Illinois reaches the brink of collapse,” said the group’s leaders in a joint statement. […]

Edgar: The fact that we’ve gone now without a budget for over two years has put this state in the worst condition I can ever remember. Even during the Blagojevich years it wasn’t this bad.
Narrator: Governor Rauner has brought Illinois to the brink of collapse. Rauner is standing in the way of a budget deal – refusing to compromise, putting funding for our schools and roads in jeopardy. Call Governor Rauner. Tell him to sit down, pass a budget and do his job.

Governor Edgar’s words are from a longer interview he gave on WXAN 103.9 FM on May 2nd. That interview contained other notable quotes including:
6:35 mark: “This state needs a budget and a good budget and that’s going to take compromise. And that’s going to take everybody sitting down concentrating on the budget and not other things.”
11:22 mark: “To me the budget is the most important thing that state government has to deal with – particularly now. And as Governor I always felt that was the number one priority. There are other things I’d like to get done but those have to wait until I get a budget.”
12:13 mark: “These other issues, some of them are good – some of them I don’t think are worthwhile – but the budget is to me the most important issue and has to be the one that everybody focuses their attention on.”
12:30 mark: “It’s painful to see what’s happened to the state…because state government hasn’t done the job of coming up with a balanced, adequate state budget.”
13:57 mark: “If people are worried about the economy that alone ought to underscore why we need to get a budget.”
Again, everybody needs to stay calm.

As I’ve said before I can never judge the effectiveness of these ads, but using the duct tape footage when talking about infrastructure funding made me chuckle.

It’s good. Strange ad.
But what matters is what Edgar will say when he’s sitting behind Rauner at a campaign stop. What he will say when he steps to the mic and gives yet another argument for why Rauner must be re-elected?

Edgar is one of last remaining respected public figures in Illinois. His sincere and dire tone cuts through IMO. Good ad.

It is absolutely critical that messaging against the lone message Rauner has out there happens.
Edgar resonates, if he didn’t, Rauner never would’ve used Edgar in his last weekend fly-around.
If you’re “tired” of Rauner being the lone disingenuous voice, this helps.
That’s how I’m framing this, for me, in the narrow spectrum.
Maybe it will make Rauner think twice(?)

Hard for me to rate this one because I have to admit to the bias of never liking Edgar. Not then, not now.
The ad is ok and certainly a pass, but I can’t gauge it to be super effective. Maybe it’s his voice or the recording itself, but it sounds like an old news reel to me. Not sure if they were going for that effect or not. Either way, that doesn’t help this.

Which of course explains the AFSME ad about NEIU (in another thread today) which has exactly the same theme and each of the ad’s featured spokesmen looks into the camera and says “do your job”.

I think the Dems are finally catching on. They need to bombard Illinois with media (print, radio, tv) pointing out the fact that Rauner is a total failure as Governor. Worse governor ever. As much as people hate Madigan, the only one on the statewide ballot is Rauner. Pritzker, Do Your Job Inc, etc., need to keep these ads hot and heavy.

The ad isn’t effective. Edgar says things that everyone already knows. He’s just describing the current situation. Cool. Problem is that most people blame Madigan for the reason we don’t have a budget, not Rauner. No amount of saying “Do Your Job” and slow motion reels of Rauner will change that. And those were the worst headlines they could find? Only one of them remotely blames the Gov for the impasse. In order to win the message they would have to convince people that no budget is bad AND it’s Rauner’s fault. How does the ad do the latter?
And Oswego Willy, before you cite an out of date Paul Simon poll, the latest public pill has gov at 42-49. That’s reelection numbers right there.

Can the emotions, ILGOP is immune to it. Have one of theirs remind them that there is a way to govern Illinois conservatively and correctly.
Rauner has corrupted ILGOP by winning their brand. Rauner abused ILGOP by abusing the governorship, destroying ILGOP’s governing credibility.
Bill Brady, Topinka, Jim Ryan, no other gubernatorial candidate so willingly twisted ILGOP with as much destruction than Rauner has by not doing the job he was elected to do.

If you don’t think that 42-49 is good for a R gov in a D state after 2 years of no budget and before the small ad buys started up…idk what to tell you. It’s also 2017 and the conventional wisdom on what are doomsday numbers for incumbents no longer apply (side note, look at trumps numbers on election day..yeesh) Imagine what they’ll be after 100 million on air and millions of doors knocked? If I was team Rauner I’d be pretty stoked to start at 42-49…

I mean, they’re not as bad as 58% disapproval, and you certainly *can* win re-election with numbers like that, but a buncha staffers should still probably update their resumes, just in case.

Trump lost Illinois by 14 points and Illinois governors aren’t elected by any type of electoral college.
The dates of the polls speak for themselves.

Wasn’t MJM’s approval rating at 13% statewide a few weeks ago according to one poll. Of course, only a select few get to vote for or against him.

1) Even if Rauner was at 42-49, those aren’t “re-elect numbers.” They’re time to consider freaking out numbers.
2) They aren’t the most current.
3) If there’s no budget and Illinois is plunged into junk status while our universities lose their accreditation, you can kiss 49 dissapproval buh-bye.
Rauner is in deep deep deep trouble, which is why Charlie Cook named him the most vulnerable incumbent. If you think otherwise, you’re smoking some not-yet-fully-legal weed.

Yeah, the other poll has some hinky methodology the whole way ’round. Not saying it doesn’t have useful information if you know how to read it, though. We could just average the numbers to put Rauner’s disapprovals somewhere in the mid-50s.

Credit downgrades and Junk status are on Madigan. MJM and his cronies have continually kicked the state finance can down the road for so long the can has grown exponentially and is so huge it can no longer be kicked. And I’m sure any poll that was done was performed in heavily democratic areas. Why would MJM run for statewide office? He has shown that he can remain in his current job and make hundreds of thousands if not millions in his side job and deny any responsibility for the states problems as he doesn’t hold statewide office.
