  2. The ease with which he lies is disturbing. Do you think he believes this stuff? Does he think anyone believes this stuff? What is it about the truth that is so unattractive to him that he has to make up lies about himself?

  12. Two really important realities to consider…

    1) Rauner knows saying that is him continuing to push his own “belief” that he has support by just saying that to build around the push back of his own upside down numbers…

Which is fine. Phony, but fine…

    2) Rauner has a serious disconnect that “applause and cheering” within a momentary stop with a polite and thoughtful audience IS a real measurable.

… which is not how to measure your own popularity or your own popularity overall. If that is true, yikes.

  14. Looks like he’s also not judging himself on how much Illinois’s credit rating is falling…

Or how many college students are leaving Illinois since they don’t know if Illinois universities will still be standing when they graduate…

Or how many students can’t afford college anymore since their Map grants are in danger…

Or how many not-for-profits have had to cut back on services or let staff go…

Or how many Illinoisans have ask the Governor to do his fricken job!!!!!

    Sorry I’m a little frustrated

Comment by Jocko Tuesday, Jun 27, 17 @ 12:14 pm

  22. Rauner is nothing like Trump. Trump knows how to bring people together and gets things done. Trump knows how to communicate.

The “Rauner is Trump” talking point is the laziest attack ever. And very insulting to the President.

  30. 47, you’ll change your tune when those “hundreds” of manufacturers the governor lined up while secretly criss-crossing the country start rolling into Illinois.

First it was “dozens,” then it grew to “hundreds.”

    It’s way creepy.

  33. 1 I don’t doubt him. I bet he does get ovations

    2. These are “prosperity gospel” churches. Wealth is a sign of Gods’ blessing. Rauner is wealthy ergo. I’m sure it also helped that he put a check in the plate.

3 what Trump did for disaffected white voters, Rauner is doing for disaffected black voters. He is harnessing the legitimate gripes and neglect. People want to be listened too. They want someone to show up. Rauner has been working this angle for a while.

4 I wouldn’t mock his statement. It concerns me. Perfidy is Rauners true craft. For those predisposed to adore the wealthy, he has a receptive audience.

5 have we forgotten the damage Dunkin did?

Comment by Honeybear Tuesday, Jun 27, 17 @ 12:23 pm

  34. This was taped June 10. Rauner went to New Life Covenant Church in Chicago on May 14. He went to My. Zion Missionary Baptist in Waukegan on Jan. 15.

If there were visits to African-American churches on the other 23 previous Sundays this year, the Rauner press shop should share them.

Until then, we have to confront the fact that the governor of Illinois is a bald-faced liar.

Comment by Reality Check Tuesday, Jun 27, 17 @ 12:24 pm

  35. ===those “hundreds” of manufacturers the governor lined up===

Like those unnamed Democratic lawmakers who keep telling Rauner in private that he’s doing fantastic work. Lol.

    Way creepy indeed.

  38. “Cuckoo”

    - Mayor Richard M Daley

Comment by Mike Cirrincione Tuesday, Jun 27, 17 @ 12:28 pm

  39. 47, you nailed it. Maybe it’s just me, but he seems to be doing that with greater and greater ease. It’s very similar to Trump, who’s given license to this kind of bad behavior by elected officials. No consequence to this kind of deception breeds more deception.

Comment by Chicago Cynic Tuesday, Jun 27, 17 @ 12:28 pm

  40. Surprised Rauner hasn’t stolen John Lennon’s famous line yet about being “more popular than Jesus.”

No, that’s not a suggestion Bruce. Seriously. Just don’t.

Comment by just sayin' Tuesday, Jun 27, 17 @ 12:29 pm

  41. What Honeybear said.

It’s very disheartening, however, to hear how often the Governor invokes personal encounters (”the people I personally meet in stage-managed situations love me!”)as a rebuttal to his upside-down poll numbers.

Comment by Nick Name Tuesday, Jun 27, 17 @ 12:32 pm

  44. He is obviously exaggerating, lying, or worse, but any attention AA community can get from is good.

The Obama Administration did nothing for this community in Chicago except stir up discontent. At least this year, black unemployment is declining.

Watch out church friends, Rauner is one of those slippery types from the garden and can be very deceiving.

Comment by Anonymous Tuesday, Jun 27, 17 @ 12:35 pm

  47. I wonder if Rauner pushed the IPI position of extortion and exploitation, that in order for jobs to come, African-Americans have to give up labor rights and make brutal concessions so that super-rich white men can permanently have political and economic power over them.

Comment by Grandson of Man Tuesday, Jun 27, 17 @ 12:39 pm

  48. You can tell why he did so well as a salesman. He has no problems telling lies with sincerity. The next thing you know, he’ll be telling us he has vivid and painful memories of black churches being burned in Arkansas when he was growing up.

Comment by Pelonski Tuesday, Jun 27, 17 @ 12:45 pm

  49. @just sayin’
It is not laziness to observe two persons who publicly bolster their policy positions by citing anecdotal examples of support and stating (or implying in Rauner’s case) a dramatically greater level than is verifiable. Compare Rauner’s statement in essence to the President’s statements about his polling numbers, the size of his inauguration crowd or the magnitude of his electoral college victory. In all cases, there is an express (in the President’s case) or implied (with the Governor) assertion of support that has no basis in fact. That is not laziness, it is observation. Laziness is refusing to make valid comparisons when one dislikes the comparison.

  50. Gov. Rauner: And anyone that reports that I haven’t been to African American churches every Sunday, or reports that at each church I don’t get standing ovations - is reporting fake news.

Comment by Demoralized Tuesday, Jun 27, 17 @ 12:52 pm

  53. just sayin’,

That’s not Rauner’s style. Instead, he will tell us how Jesus took him aside and said “Bruce, keep up the fight, you are doing great things for this state.”

  55. It’s just Ken Dunkin standing and applauding by himself each time. 10 more ovations and he gets the VC job he was promised.

Comment by Quizzical Tuesday, Jun 27, 17 @ 12:57 pm

  56. So has anyone checked his schedule and then confronted him on this?

Comment by Chicago Cynic Tuesday, Jun 27, 17 @ 12:58 pm

  57. “At least this year the black unemployment rate is declining”

So is the population, they are leaving Illinois in droves.

  59. “The Obama Administration did nothing for this community in Chicago.”

Many thousands of African-Americans got Medicaid expansion and vital healthcare, as well as private health insurance with the help of subsidies.

By the way I helped family members shop for health insurance on the federal marketplace and was able to help one get a good deal on a silver plan as late as last year.

Now Rauner grandstands like Trump but won’t dare take a stand for or against Trumpcare.

    “except stir up discontent”

Obama was responsible for white officers shooting blacks and deeply-entrenched and old problems that can’t be solved by one president alone? That “discontent” was latent white racism that rose to the surface easily. Obama could barely speak of racism and black suffering without some calling him a divider. That’s another form of racism, where you can’t dare speak about your pain.

There is definately something very wrong with Bruce Rauner, besides the fact that he’s the current governor, that is.

  67. A couple days ago I had proposed “perplexing” as a one-word descriptor of what’s going on in Springfield between the governor and basically everybody. This goes beyond “perplexing” to enter the land of “worrying.”

It seems to me that perhaps he really does not understand that of the state’s 13 million residents, around 12 million or so are profoundly concerned, and have every right to be.
