Meanwhile on the House floor, Democrats moved their bills pertaining to Governor Rauner’s reforms, but Republicans called them “fake.” They said Democrats abandoned negotiations in order to ram through their own plan.
“Hell, you have no idea how low I will go to get a budget,” Representative Steven Andersson said. “You have no idea. But the point is here, you do this now, you interrupt these negotiations.”
Democrats counter they’re trying to work with the GOP.
“This is a place of compromise. This is a place of negotiation. Each and every one of these proposals have been discussed with Republicans,” Representative Lou Lang, said.
Bills that are only “discussed” with the other party are, by definition, not compromises.

If I say you should give me a cookie, and you don’t want to give me a cookie, but you and I “discuss” the idea of giving me half a cookie, yet I still grumble that I want the WHOLE cookie, a proposal to give me half a cookie would still be a compromise.

Does the ILGOP really need to import the White House brand of lazy anti-intellectualism? Of all the people to emulate…downstaters should be insulted that their elected leaders feel the need to use toddler vocabulary.

Andersson has been one of the most open minded GOP house members, he has publicly supported a tax increase…”Andersson told his constituents the tax hike “would help shore up the state’s need for revenue to pay its bills, its pensions and support its programs.” Give him some slack - he’s one of the good guys in term of compromising .

Umm no. Thats still just an OFFER to compromise. An agreement by both on the half cookie solution is the actual compromise. Sheesh.

Curious who some characterize the talks as negotiations and some characterize them as discussions. If the parties legitimately gave on some things that’s more than discussing items.

The implication here is not clear to me. Is the idea that none of these bills (which ones?) have *anything* the Republicans want? That seems unlikely, but I’m glad to be wrong.

Don’t be dense. The idea here is just because they put some stuff into bills the Republicans like doesn’t make it compromise.
When the GOP called its proposal a “Capitol Compromise” without negotiating it first, it wasn’t compromise either.

The essence of compromise is settling a disagreement with concessions by both sides. If I keep railing that I want the whole cookie, and I refuse to agree on anything less, then you, the one with possession of the cookie and therefore the power to decide the fate of said cookie, making concessions to give me half a cookie when you could just as easily continue denying everyone cookies is a compromise. Yeah, that’s not an “agreement” but the cookie holder is still compromising, even if me, the cookie-demander, am unsatisfied at the end of the day and refuse to compromise.
Would Lou be more accurate if he said “Look, the House Dems are compromising here”? Yes, yes he would. But come on guys, accept the 1/2 cookie and let’s get a budget already

Thanks for replying Rich. It seems that considering these extra-budgetary things at all in the course of budget negotiations is a huge compromise already.

What’s truly astounding is that after 3 years and all of the fallout from no budget…conversations and statements like these are what we get.

As disappointed as I am to say it, remember that the Republicans did not win the IL Governors seat and the White House by making strong intellectual arguments for their positions.

Yes, it is. Mixing “turnaround agenda” items in with the budget is a victory for Rauner, and sets a bad president. What will Rauner demand next time? However, to save the many, many hostages that Rauner is starving, the Democrats have given in on mixing budget and non-budget items. However, it looks like Rauner wants nothing short of unconditional surrender by the Democrats.

When July 1 arrives and there is no budget, how will both sides apportion the blame? All of the index fingers will be pointing to the other side of the aisle.
