Maybe the Governor could respond to some of those comments and threats to legislators. I do applaud the IPI for, I guess showing some decorum. The Governor should come out against these threats against members of his party.

The problem seems to be that many outlets wouldn’t exist, or wouldn’t have influence if they didn’t have a foaming at the mouth base. The rhetoric is a required element. If all I read was IPI, I’d probably think Madigan was the devil incarnate and the sole source of every problem in Illinois too. And obviously IPI needs that level of hostility to do what they do. Propaganda works, which is why it’s been done for so long

It’s one thing to post such material anonymously. These folks find it completely acceptable to attach their names and links to all kinds of information about themselves. That they feel this is perfectly acceptable makes this all the more disturbing.
Commenters making threats of physical violence should probably be visited by the ISP.

IPI is fear-based. That is their strategy. Stoke fear. Fear of government. Fear of “tax eaters.” They use this fear to try to keep politicians in line.
Those comments above? Those are the desired result of years of stoking fear.
This isn’t a “how were we to know people would act like this?” It is “Our organizing strategy is going according to the plan.”

And hence why I stopped using Facebook. Networks like this provide a level of anonymity and unaccountability that some users abuse. Seeing those comments in a form of impersonal published media provides some form of endorsement for that language and rhetoric (however flawed it may be) which signals to others that this kind of abuse is not only okay, but encouraged.
It’s bad apples, the reason we don’t want them in the bushel is because they cause rot in the rest of the bushel.

When politicians of any stripe allow violent rhetoric to go unchallenged or, worse yet, encourage it, there is no way to know who will end up acting out that rhetoric. Since no one would accuse Sanders of fomenting this type of behavior, this seems to be a pretty good example of backlash. That’s one of many reasons why it needs to be condemned, not encouraged.

When you stir the pot for decades, simmering the class and racial resentments that serve political purposes, this is a predictable result. And while we will see a lot of fair-minded folks say that both the Left and the Right are guilty of using loaded language to gin up the emotions of their supporters, and I agree that both side do this, one side has made it a central tenet of its political organizing.
Black Lives Matter, Occupy Wall Street and other groups on the left have endorsed, either tacitly or explicitly, violent language. It is wrong when they do it, and it’s wrong when others on the left do it or are silent when it happens.
But c’mon, it’s not even close. How many talk radio stars became famous for using the most vitriolic language to build and hold an audience? Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, Savage, Ben Shapiro, Dennis Miller, and on and on and on.
The left has who? Bill Maher?
The point is, there is a huge audience for right wing talk radio that is spoon fed a daily dose of victim-hood. It’s a way to keep poor whites from uniting with poor black and brown people with whom they share most economic interests. And make no mistake, it is part of a concerted, long term political strategy to exploit racial divisions. Because if all poor folks voted their economic interests, the GOP would cease to exist.
And when that rhetoric comes home to roost, immediate calls are made for both sides to tone down the violent imagery. As if. Yes, both sides do it, but one side has perfected the Pavlovian reflex among its supporters so much so that comparisons aren’t fair. The right wing does this professionally, systematically, with a purpose and with follow-up and coordination. The history of talk radio for the past thirty years is a case study in right wing resentment and victim-hood politics. And they’ve made a lot of money doing it.
The left has NPR. Lol.

Exactly. It’s stupid to use a real name and make comments like that, assuming some of these people are not trolls with fake identities. Those comments could get them fired from their jobs, depending on the employer. Some employers may not want those images for their companies.

The re-post was perfect for the purpose of showing the IPI for what it does best - agitate, which often leads to hateful rhetoric, which too often theses days leads to actual violence. The cynical disclaimer had to have the authors chuckling - ‘this should get us off the hook”….Rich isn’t giving them hell, he’s just showing what they spew, and they think that’s hell.

Just reading the comments for this post we see a major reason things are so bad. People are more focused on defending their own “tribe” than in addressing the unacceptable behavior. Your side is more guilty of engaging in vitriol than mine.
We must get to the stage where we recognize that unacceptable behavior is prevalent among all sides. It’s important to join together and say no more.

Enough with this pox on both houses line of argument. It was wrong when Bernie’s started shooting. It’s wrong with the IPI’s comments are talking about lynching. It’s all wrong.
The point of this post isn’t “Republicans are bad.” The point is that in this particular point in time, the IPI is fanning flames of violence and is only giving lip service to calming passions. For that, at this time, they deserve to be criticized. When a democratic or left wing group does this next, everyone should call them out for it too. But because someone else did something bad doesn’t mean this isn’t bad.

Two things stand out here.
First, people are legitimately frustrated at the actions of elected officials who got us into this mess. I, personally, didn’t cook any books in Springfield or mismanage pension funds. I did, however, re-elect some incumbents who helped cause this fiasco.
Second, civility and good manners are hard to find on the Internet, Cap Fax being an exception. The country is spiraling out of control, and it’s not going to get better.

I used to think that people who spewed hate and violence from behind their keyboards were harmless fools. Sticks and stones & all that. And easily ignored if you avoided certain sites.
Recently I’ve changed my mind. The guy driving up from Carolina to DC to shoot up the pizza place really scared me. It was a preposterous rumor that the guy fervently believed because he ‘read it on the internet’ and so damn many people were retweeting and commenting on it. The fable had reached critical mass on social media.
The lies, the violent rhetoric and the guns have created a bad, bad nexus where the crazies are stimulated by people who know better but either don’t understand or don’t care that their rhetoric has evil consequences.

There is undoubtedly violence from the left, but its ludicrous to say its anything close to a majority. The killings in Portland and New York by white supremacists, for example, come to mind, as does the rampant violence by “Alt-Right” and NeoNazi groups any time they make an appearance. Right wing terror in the US has a long history, from the KKK to Oklahoma city, and it hasn’t gone away.

Check out what Black Lives Matter has been up to. I’m not just speaking about someone shooting at Republicans. I’m talking about groups that have organized violent riots or “gatherings.” These groups are associated with the left.

In reality, yes, 1.2 cents more per dollar. To some, it might be the difference between eating ramen noodles and not. But it’s not like when you go to do you taxes it completely vanishes. You won’t get all that 1.2 cents per dollar back, but you will get some of it back. For every $10k you make, it amounts to $120 more in taxes a year. $10 less a month on your paycheck. The 32% the tax mongers tout makes it sound like they’re taking 32% more from you if you *don’t* just do the simple math. Just more How to Lie with Statistics Boogyman smoke and mirrors. I hope they someday revert it back to 3.75% for all of our sake.

I’m happy that I’m still shocked by such postings. And, no, they are not exclusively on one side of the political equation. But it appears that there are many many more on one side. A side where people use racist imagery often. and a side with a president who posts a violent video against the media. it’s all very scary, any such violent commentary. call it all out. Rauner, as leader of the Illinois GOP, should be appalled at this level of incivility. At the very least he could Tweet or FB a message condoning what is going on on IPI’s website with these vitriolic comments. If he stays silent, that in itself just seems to reinforce the Saputo’s comment from 2015. This is not “listening to the people”. These are threats, and should be condoned and treated as such. The sidelines are no place for the Executive of Illinois to be right now, no matter how mad he may be at the moment.

I am an “independent” person and purposely used lower case in spelling independent. I do not identify myself with an “Independent organization”. I know what I believe and I know which officials with whom I agree or disagree. I vote for a person and that person who votes most closely to my ideals. My most problematic issue is having to declare a party affiliation in order to vote in a primary election and I think there are many others that feel much the same way. I believe, but have no proof, that more “independant” folk out there than those that identify with one “Political Party”.

Ironically, these vitriol bombs show how we got to this fiscal mess in the first place. When choosing between biting the bullet to raise taxes to pay for the cost of government or kicking the can down the road, politicians with imperfect constitutions chose to avoid the flood of anger and kicked the can. I pray that no one chooses to act out their violent fantasies. I would also ask that everybody who says that this tax raise isn’t necessary, including the governor, specify what real expenses they would cut to avoid the hike.

I’ve got a lot of respect for those legislators, particularly the Republicans, who had the courage to vote their conscience and not their party. Especially when they knew this rhetoric was coming. Kudos to you folks

I don’t know. I was going to quote Galatians, but I think this quote from Hosea should be looked at by IPI: “You have plowed wickedness, you have reaped injustice, You have eaten the fruit of lies. Because you have trusted in your way, in your numerous warriors,therefore the tumult of war shall arise among your people, and all your fortresses shall be destroyed”

They’ve breeded dogs. Attack dogs. Not trained properly, or by sheer animal instinct, they are now not in control of the animals they’ve nurtured. That’s a dangerous thing.

cc: Don’t kid yourself. There’s no such thing as voting for the person. Legislators organize with other like-minded people to get things done. Still other like-minded individuals fund orgs. that lobby these like-minded people and attempt to get more like-minded people elected. You can claim to be independent if you like, but please don’t presume that your ‘independent’ vote is treated as such. Whenever you ‘vote the person’ you are voting for a vast network of entanglements (for either side). That’s why party matters. Join one and make a difference. Good luck. h

Everything should be in quotation marks with the “Illinois” “Policy” “Institute.” While technically true they are in Illinois, they don’t have Illinois’ interest at heart. They are not a real policy shop-they are Rauner’s henchmen. And they are not really an “Institute,” but more a “Fireplace in Which to Burn Rauner’s Money.” That they don’t see the consequences in their language is utterly laughable. These hacks know how the game is played.

IPI need to have a mechanism so that unacceptable confrontational threatening comments are not published. And IPI needs to state emphatically that such is the case. And when one does appear it should be stricken.
