Do Your Job, Inc. airs new TV ad

After yesterday’s historic bipartisan budget votes by the Illinois House, Do Your Job, Inc. is asking Governor Rauner to stop obfuscating responsibility, put politics aside and do his job in a new ad which will air on broadcast and digital platforms.

During the governor’s self-inflicted budget crisis, Illinois has experienced what former republican Gov. Jim Edgar described as the worst condition he can ever remember including the state’s tenure during disgraced former Governor Rod Blagojevich. Now, Gov. Rauner has engaged in a campaign spree blaming everyone but himself for a tax increase he supported for months. Rauner’s political apparatuses have also chimed in with threats of political retribution and dog-whistle politics.

Moving forward, the Governor can do his job by ensuring schools in Illinois are equitably funded. The legislature has passed Senate Bill 1, which Rauner overwhelmingly supports - to the tune of 90 percent per his education czar - but refuses to sign for what many perceive to be political reasons.

Do Your Job, Inc. is led by IL Sen. Michael E. Hastings of South Suburban Cook County, IL Rep. Lou Lang of Skokie and Illinois AFL-CIO President Michael T. Carrigan.

Last week, he tweeted. After 3 years of stalling, Governor Rauner said he was at his desk and ready to sign a budget. So Democrats and Republicans put politics aside sending Rauner a balanced, bipartisan budget. After 30,000 lost jobs, 15 billion in unpaid bills, schools faced with not reopening, it came down to one man. By vetoing the bipartisan budget, Rauner was the only obstacle to progress. Tell Rauner, next time, do your job.

Really? Did Rauner’s people write this ad? Rauner’s opponents are going to spend money to remind the general public that the only person standing between them and the unpopular tax increase they’re about to face was Rauner?

This was good: “The legislature has passed Senate Bill 1, which Rauner overwhelmingly supports…”.

This tees Do Your Job up for what will be the next major issue for Illinois- whether or not the school funding “MOU” gets implemented.

Lots of undisputed truth here.

For me and my take and grade…

The “do your job” meme and the last 10 seconds of the ad, when silent, made me wonder “why are they asking Rauner to do his job?”.

Take away the last 10 seconds, as a silent…. lots missing, but that last 10 seconds are that important.

Arsenal - but the rub is that “Do Your Job Inc.” never has to say it. People will know about the tax increase. And since media companies usually lump these ad buys together then it is plausible for a Rauner or ILGOP ad about “Tax Hike Mike” will air before or after.

Which is where I go back to the first 10 seconds being all shadowy silhouettes.

In favor of the message, could be a little stronger though. It is only 2017. It is too early for all the victims of Governor Rauner’s veto to come out and speak. Those ads will be a little stronger i think.

But they won’t put it in the context of this ad, not with all the distractions that Reality Check rightly cites.

In fact, you just watch, some people will blame Rauner for the tax hike, with varying degrees of plausibility to their argument. Hell, Proft already is.

C. With Reality Check on the visuals- no visceral punch to it. The audio was stronger, but not direct enough.

Just say “last week he said he was ready to sign a budget” and show the text of the tweet.

Short declarative sentences. “He vetoed the bipartisan budget. He was the obstacle to progress” Not “by vetoing the bi-partisan budget, etc”

Not loving it. Watched it twice, with and without sound. It’s a fairly flattering photo of Rauner — the two lamps making the “burning the midnight oil” case. The lost jobs part actually shows people working — kind of confusing. Same problem with the stacks of money. I love that the anti-Rauner folks are getting out there, but this messaging is not working for me.

Rauner told us that a tax hike wasn’t necessary and we could roll back the rate. He then had 2.5 years to show his math and was unable to do so.

I have no doubt that there will be those that reduce this to Madigan raises taxes and Rauner cuts them. But nothing was going to convince those folks otherwise anyway. Those beliefs are engrained. The real issue is that we elected the governor to do a job and he’s failed at it. Quite spectacularly even. That’s the point that this ad delivers on.

It’s pretty tame and doesn’t really go for the jugular. I know it’s backed by labor, but the first “consequence” they start with is lost jobs with a road worker visual. I’m sure everyone was thinking “what will happen to all those poor construction workers?”. A focus on services that were cut for sick, disabled, foster kids, women and children impacted by domestic violence, homeless, etc.. would probably be more impactful than this.

How do you mention Rauner tweeting without mentioning Trump?

Look at these spreads:

2016 Illinois Presidential:

Clinton: 3.1M
Trump 2.1M

2014 Illinoisn Governor

Rauner: 1.82M
Quinn: 1.68M

1.4 million more votes for Clinton than Quinn; just 300K more votes from Trump than Rauner.

You think it might be a good idea increase turnout by appealing to those who voted against Trump?

Have you noticed that Rauner is scared to death to be associated with Trump, won’t even say his name?

Not rocket science to hammer Trump/Rauner all day, every day.

He sure does. My Facebook friends aren’t complaining about no budget, they’re mad about the tax hike. A bunch of them are state employees too. Democrats have an uphill battle.

Find me someone who doesn’t complain about taxes. It’s a national pastime.

The problem is that Rauner didn’t keep the tax hike from happening. He didn’t even get the reforms that he promised would get the state booming. He got nothing.

So exactly what will he be running on? Let me finish the job that I couldn’t even start? And if he suggests that we can roll back the recently passed tax increase he’ll deserve all of the ridicule he gets.

He couldn’t work with Madigan to get an acceptable deal in his first four years, what could he possibly say that would convince us that the next four years would be any different? The “shake things up” shtick won’t work this time around.

A question for Rep. Lou Lang of Skokie, did you vote for the Edgar pension ramp or for any legislation that did not fully fund the pensions each year? Have you ever sponsored a bill to fund the unfunded retiree healthcare? Your biography says you been a representative since 1987 so you are culprit with Michael Madigan in making the mess that drove this State to the abyss caused by the pension mess.

That’s all true. But most people complain about taxes on FB, they don’t comment here.

Rauner will say he vetoed the tax. His agenda was blocked by the obstructionist Democrats.

And he lost to Clinton by 1M votes in Illinois after-all.

I’m not saying that Rauner doesn’t have a path to victory particularly since his opponents will have their own set of challenges and Rauner is a very effective campaigner, maybe one of the best I’ve ever seen. But simply running a campaign that continually uses the word “Madigan” doesn’t seem like the path that gets him there. The difficult thing for me at this point is that I can’t see any other viable message.

I often agree with OW on the ratings of these things, but I think Robert the 1st is right.

Rauner WANTS to own the veto. He’s going to ride on the message of Rauner as the guy who tried to stop those dag-gummit “irresponsible politicians” from reaching into your pockets instead of fixin’ anythin’.

At most this ad is a feel-good piece for folks that are tuned-in to all the budget machinations of the last couple years and tuned-out to Rauner’s PR games. It might gin up the Dem base, but it surely won’t convince any fence-sitters–if there’s any left at this point.

I give it a C at best.

That’s true but what will his opponents campaign on? We stopped all reforms and jacked your taxes even with this ineffective governor trying to do otherwise?

Before this week I thought Rauner was one and done (terms). Not now.
