Seriously though, this is both cruel and shockingly stupid and self-destructive. Radical Candor and the leaks were inevitable from this approach. I mean, didn’t these people learn anything from the early days of the Trump Administration and the Intelligence Community. If you pee on people enough, they’re going to pee back and worse.

I had always assumed that to keep the lights on with no budget, especially at the prisons, some money got moved around where maybe there wasn’t the authority to do so. If that happened then some of the people who were dismissed would probably be able to point it out, I’ll be interested to see if there are any reports.
It will be a delicate dynamic though. The people who were let go or resigned may have a lot of pent up anger and frustration, but they probably still see the Speaker as the enemy, see the crop of Democratic candidates as a step in the wrong direction, etc. so after the initial feelings wear off the realization will set in that getting revenge will also have the unintended consequences of helping these Democrats and we will probably see this stuff taper off.

Any time you see, “the real problem with…” It means there are too many problems to fully analyze them all…which is the real problem.
I appreciate the sentiment that Rauner sold the Republican Party to the super rich, but the GOP was DOA before Rauner appeared. He simply created a block of people looking for any option to end the Blagojevich Quinn option.

I’ve always thought Rauner has acted competently in his self-interest and in achieving his real objectives.

A lot of this flows directly from the “Run government like a business” mindset. Instead of bulding coalitions to get 30 and 60 to get 90% of what he wanted and declaring victory, the Governor is pressing his bet that if he keeps insisting that his way is the only way and soon enough everyone will see the light and fall into line.

Rauner still thinks he can run the state with the same heavy hand he ran all those companies he controlled in the private equity world. This is despite nearly 3 years of disastrous results and he has thus far shown absolutely no ability to hold himself to the same standards he holds all other to.

It’s a purge.
It’s also a walkout.
Staffers aren’t leaving because they’re hopeful or happy. They are leaving because they have to, voluntarily or involuntarily.
Discovering the real Rauner has made me furious and feel played as a fool, yet I was never a supporter or fan of his. I can’t imagine how badly his true believers are feeling today after he repeatedly mistreats them.
Sure. They’re hurt. They have to be. Rauner isn’t who he claimed to be. They must feel horrible.
The guys posting here in support of Rauner aren’t supporting the man per se, as they are supporting the goals Rauner promised. Somehow they think everyone else is corrupted. They don’t want to see a Democrat as governor, so they stick with Rauner.
Rauner was a terrible governor for everyone, including for his fans. We’ll look back on him and shake our heads. This guy blew it big-time.

To fire essentially the entire staff en masse, as Rauner did is as you point out entirely within his pervue.
So is walking out in front of traffic in a crosswalk, as pedestrians have the right of way. Doesn’t make it smart or prudent.
As for criticizing those who are ‘lashing out’, I beg to differ. If you dedicate your career and reputation to defending someone in office, that loyalty is expected to be a 2 way street.
Instead, Rauner used his staff like a kleenex. Filled them with all of his nonsense, then cast them aside at a moments notice w/out any acknowledgement of their work and sacrifice.
If you expect people to act professionally upon their discharge….then treat them as a professional.

The fact you ask this question tells me you were never involved / don’t understand how to play the political game.
Answer: you shuffle them to the side with a new job in some agency, maybe even a slight raise or promotion, at least until after the election. If you truly want to get rid of them, you fire them after the election.

You want to “shuffle” these people into positions where they aren’t needed at agencies that don’t want them. You want Rauner to repeat the Blago/Quinn mistake that made IL hiring practices the subject of a federal investigation.

The political game, rules, the cardinal sins… yeah, they haven’t changed. “Why?”… Cardinal sins in anything never change.

Ah, so Goldberg was the one with an inclinling to do what is right for people who put their names and reputations on the line for Rauner, and not Rauner himself. And now that he’s gone, all sense of dignity, loyalty, and respect is gone. Thanks for confirming.

Munger and her Staff and Cew that were picked up could be considered a “courtesy of allies” and while Rauner (and Goldberg) did catch heat, it was the “courtesy of allies” at play.
This? This purge?
In many cases, direct personal and campaign connections, both Staff and Crew directly to the Governor, were just summarily dismissed.
In the direct, many times absolute direct, connection to this governor, the political arm and the obvious and real governing arm, that’s the Cardinal Sin.
It wouldn’t have been breaking the Cardinal Rule if Rauner’s Crew took only 2 or 3, or even the 23, and Munger.
Rauner dismissed or ran out 22 members of his direct Staff and Crew, without option, so Rauner gets what is happening and speaking only for me, what is called for in breaking the Cardinal Rule.

It’s not just moving them around state jobs, you could easily find them work in campaigns or political operations or even private businesses–especially the comms folks.
Walking them out the door to replace them with people who have literally no experience doing their new jobs is bad form.

Phil, I know that this is a fruitless effort. But try to understand that differing situations usually require different solutions.
When Leslie Munger lost her very expensive race, Bruce Rauner gave her and her staff some very cushy spots in the deputy governor’s office. By doing this, Rauner used public funds to pay political favors. This is a very common, but still unethical, response to losing an election.
Later, Bruce decided to clean house and get rid of a bunch of a people who have been with him for a long time. Instead of following the normal political playbook (i.e., dumping them in agencies and then quietly removing them from the payroll over the next few months), Bruce decided to go postal and have security walk these well-connected, media-savvy folks to their cars. This is neither ethical nor commonplace.
In the first instance, we were criticizing his lack of ethics and his hypocrisy in creating a bunch of unnecessary, highly paid jobs in the Gov’s office at a time when the State was not paying its bills. In the second instance, we were commenting on his inability to foresee that dumping a big group of well-connected loyalists was likely to end in tears — on his side.
See, one is a problem of ethics, and one is a problem of common sense. In the best of all possible worlds, it would be nice to have a governor who had both. (To dreeeeeeeaam, the impossssssible dreeeeeeeeam…)

Ad hominem arguments (look it up, we’ll wait) are about the hollowest sort available, often used when evidence-based arguments are either unavailable or ineffective. Ideologues unable to sell their wares are among the most common purveyors of such attacks, which seem to provide them a sort of psychological re-assurance.

There was no need to walk these people out the door. They weren’t being fired for any reason other than just because. They could have been given an opportunity to transfer into a position they were qualified for, exempt or thru the standard hiring process. They could have been offered severance and given a few weeks warning. By the way - this routine doesn’t play well for morale in the private sector either. It’s just that the staff usually can’t get anyone interested in the media.

This all reminds me of when I worked rather briefly for an administration that shall not be named. Things were not going well, and as I walked out the door one morning, my husband said, “You’re fine as long as they don’t offer you a job at the Tollway.”
Later that day, I was in a meeting with the Comms Director, and she said, “Hey, I saw a job that might be right for you over at Tollway.”
She seemed nonplussed when I began laughing hysterically…

Actually, the deputy governor’s office and position, like the secretary of education’s office and position, do not exist.
Munger is listed as a contractual senior operations director at Healthcare and Family Services.

Munger was appointed to Comptroller after she lost an election.
Munger was appointed deputy governor or some other made up gig after she lost an election.
Regardless of “who’s watch” (both under Rauner by the way) Munger has made a nice career out of losing elections.
We will have to coin a new phrase for Munger “to the loser go the spoils”. Sounds funny but it works.
Rauner is just a spoiled loser. An PK sold out for all of the failure. Super job big guy.

Phil you should do some historical research on capfax back to 2006 or before. pay attention to the die hard Quinn and Blago supporters’ comments down to the end of those reigns. you are becoming like one of them and I’m sure you have a lot more to offer and contribute than going after regular commentors with a lot of knowledge and experience, and who are rarely partisan in their comments. those die hards seldom to never post anymore. nothing to fight for anymore.

It’s hypocritical to criticize me for sharing “sensitive HR information” and defend rich for doing the same.

Im sad that people were walked out like they were dangerous or something. Thats waaay extreme. And sure they could have been told to bid on state positions they were qualified for in the agencies. Its rather mysterious he took a scorched earth approach. Implies there are other hands guiding it as it doesnt make logical sense in our state. Implies the mystery hands arent in our state.
