A group that ran ads during the late stages of Illinois’ budget impasse is going back on TV for three days to urge Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner to support a Democratic plan to pay for the state’s public schools.
The group is Do Your Job Inc., which is led by state Sen. Michael Hastings, D-Tinley Park; state Rep. Lou Lang, D-Skokie; and Illinois AFL-CIO President Michael T. Carrigan.
A significant problem remains with the budget plan enacted by lawmakers earlier this month over Rauner’s veto — namely a new method to distribute state public school funding. Without approval of a new funding formula, schools don’t get any state money. Democrats have passed legislation to change the distribution method, but it gives more money to Chicago Public Schools than a Republican alternative.
Democrats have withheld sending the bill to Rauner because he has vowed to use his veto powers to rewrite it, contending the money for CPS is a “bailout.” That ratchets up pressure as the opening date for schools gets nearer. […]
The tax-exempt group said it has purchased $118,000 of TV time on broadcast and cable markets across the state to air the ad from Wednesday through Friday evening.

90 percent. That’s how much of the school funding bill that Gov. Rauner agrees with. So why in the world would he threaten to veto it?
Because Rauner won’t budge on his extreme agenda. He digs in, no matter the cost.
Republicans and Democrats had to go over his head to fix Rauner’s budget crisis. And now, he’s after our schools. Without the money, some won’t reopen this fall. Other schools may close their doors by Thanksgiving.
Tell Gov. Rauner, ‘Sign the bill. Do your job.

Democrats have strange definition of an extreme agenda- pension reform. Funny how they leave that part out of the ad.
Even though Speaker Madigan says they are unsustainable, Chicago cannot afford to make the pension payments to CPS, President Cullerton proposed a comprehensive bill and Moody’s and Fitch’s say it is necessary.
As usual, they are in the extreme, refusing to fix a broken system that is bankrupting Illinois.

Very good ad. I give it a A. As for the photo of Rauner being too “nice”, it separates the ad from the usual attack ad, emphasizing the message without relianceon cartoonish villain images.

The script needs to be tightened so “90 percent” and threat to schools not opening/closing can be said twice. Repition is critical.
I’d eliminate the second graph entirely and tighten the third to make air for it. No need to mention budget, the focus is schools.

Flattering picture of Rauner is an unforced error and while grabbing pertinent headlines and framing, there isn’t really a strong “immediacy”…
… Thanksgiving? “That’s a long way away” was my thought people may have. There is little to speak to how grave it is when the “deadline” for some seems so “far”
It’s salvaged with “Do your job”
It’s critical that the comtinued drumbeat Chance coined about the disinterested governor continues.
They can do better here. It started so promising with the glass of water.

@Tom- The people who make the ads are not the audience. If they can’t handle a critique (if they are reading) then they have bigger issues. BTW- in my opinion @Word is a coach to me. His is some of the most insightful commentary.

I’m OK calling unconstitutional proposals that give the government the power to break its contracts extreme, so you’re just going to have rewrite your “Rauner the Valiant” fanfic.
To the ad: putting a negative ad on TV and reinforcing the “do your job” slogan is probably more important than any specifics of the script, visuals, etc.

Frankly incredibly misleading. As others have stated - what is this 10%? I bet most people don’t know that it’s a CPS clause. What’s more, didn’t he already go on record that he will line item veto it not outright veto? If so- then he will be true to his word, right? He agrees with 90% and will veto the 10% he disagrees with.
Lastly - and perhaps most to the point, it needs to be on his desk to do anything. Why is the legislature dragging its feet on this? (rhetorical question because it is obvious - they want maximum chaos by pushing it as close to school start as they can… stop playing games legislature, get this to his desk to keep it moving, bad or good).

Amendatory veto. The process is different enough that it threatens school openings in a way that a line-item veto wouldn’t.

What was the 10%?
Common sense says you take 90% and not ruin everything by demanding the other 10. Governors cash in a winning hand of 90%. Anyone would, except someone who wants to deliberately ruin everything.
These pro-Rauner posters are an embarrassment to common sense.

When everything is “extreme” nothing is extreme. I think the ad has a potentially receptive audience and a theoretically decent message about the 90%. But since it contains two of my no-no’s for political ads–the overused word “extreme” –and the ever bossy “tell so and so to do so and so”, I can only give it a C. Change those two things and they might have had an A ad.

Since there are 33 Republican Governors and only 16 Democrats and one independent, it would stand to reason that more Republicans would be in the top ten and bottom 10
All of top 10 are Republican led by two Republican leading blue states Massachusetts and Maryland. The bottom 10 have 8 Republicans and one Democrat and one independent.
The common denominator in the bottom 10 are large unfunded pension obligations.

According to the latest ranking of states by the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, the most fiscally sound states in the nation are all low tax strongholds while the 10 least solvent states are almost all high tax and heavily Democratic.
Nearly bankrupt Illinois is at the bottom of all but one of the five individual measures. Of the top 25 most solvent states, all but 4 are solidly Republican. Of the bottom 25 states all but 5 are solidly Democratic.

If you do then you must be fully aware that the current governor must be replaced. Not because of party. But because he has no credibility as a governor, can’t pass his reform agenda, and can’t sell his reforms because he’s been a disaster.

The Rauner team will be very pleased with the image they used of him that is allowed to endure through a long length of this and then is even reintroduced. That image really dominates the messaging. If you were casually passing and not listening closely, this could easily be construed as a Rauner promo. The Voiceover isn’t supported as well by the graphics coming up. Voice is more dramatic than the smaller graphic headlines.
This was done by an artsy person whose greatest desire is to win an ad award. It really flatters more than it attacks.
It’s the nicest produced “fail” I’ve seen in a long time. This crew is good and needs much better direction.

Hey LP, Rauner has to wear the jacket for his utter failure to achieve any of his objectives. When Oswego Willy makes any point about Rauner, you accuse him of being a Madigan sycophant. This attack and deflect method is useless. OW is no Madigan apologist. Your scam is like denying Illinois should fire Lovie Smith because of his record of wins and losses by pointing out a coach at a different school has a worse record. Man up and accept that your guy has failed miserably at his attempt to fix Illinois. In large measure, he has yet to articulate any plans to achieve any of his objectives, present a balanced budget or demonstrate any path to success. Saying no when he lacks the votes to pass legislation is not leadership. Accepting Madigan is largely responsible for the mess and pointing out that Rauner found a way to make it worse doesn’t make me a leftist bomb thrower. I’m just paying attention. Try a come back that doesn’t include accusing everybody of blindly supporting Madigan. Address Rauner’s failure to this point and explain his path to turn around his administration.

Again, it’s funny you identify the Governor as a complete failure with your comments and you don’t even realize you’re doing it.
Why would I want to vote for a guy who hasn’t managed to accomplish anything while he’s been in office? The environment isn’t likely to change as far as the makeup of the GA. Still going to be Democratic I would imagine. So why do I want to vote for a guy who has proven he can’t get anything accomplished with that GA?
If you want someone who rants and raves and consistently plays the victim then Rauner is your guy. If you want someone who can govern, I would suggest people look elsewhere.
