So it looks like the Waugespack/Matlak race in 32rd is shaping up to be the tightest. Stone and Daley are looking like they will hold on. Fioretti is rolling along in the 2nd. Dowell/Tillman is still a toss up, but Dowell must like the numbers.

And tonight’s losers are:
1. Richard Mell. The Colon/Colom race is a blowout. If you back a challlenger, you need to win. Or at least come close. This one isn’t close.
2. Mayor Daley. For a popular guy, he has zero coattails. I can’t point to a single race where it looks like he made any difference at all.
3. The 2nd Ward voters. Enjoy Fioretti. Nice voting. This is good for the rest of us, since the City Counsel needs at least one buffoon. Fioretti will entertain the most of the city, while making people from the second ward “forget” when asked what ward they live in. Not to digress, but Stone would come close to the buffoon label, but he is more a strange and bitter man than a real buffoon. If Moore somehow pulls it out, Moore will merely be an annoying liberal menace, and not an actual buffoon. Fioretti is the real deal — an actual buffoon.

Looks like big losses for Boss Daley, although a Joe Moore defeat would lessen the sting. If Moore loses, though, it’s because he lost sight of his ward while he was crusading on “national” issues.

I’m quite happy that Ald. Brookins is running away with his election. All the predictions suggested he was gonna lose. Let him continue the work of building Chicago’s 21st ward.
So how many more Aldermen have lost their jobs 2 or 3? Man this is great.

The race between Cole-Simon shows me that name recognition means little and having ads with Dick Durbin and Barack Obama arent going to help you as much as one would think. I think they forgot that this is a city race and not a congressional race where Dick Durbin and Obama may come in handy. Brad Cole did run some negative ads as well which undoubtedly contribute to his victory.
I hope this smashes any hopes of Sheila Simon going anywhere outside of Carbondale. If she cant win a city like Carbondale, I dont see her winning any major race outside of Carbondale alone.

I would say that Cong. Jesse Jackson was a winner in this cycle, He got to retire “Aunt Hattie” and his guy Howard Brooking’s won. His Wife will be Alderman in the 7th ward and he thinks his year will be 2011.

The Simon loss may have more to do with the Chicago democrats showing up to support her. They are not popular down south these days.

Th Simon camp just had too many missteps after the primary. She used a lot of big names from Chicago and across the State, but she didn’t use the two that would have really helped her “Paul & Jean Simon.” Who cares if Obama and Madigan are for you. Plus, Cole spent a truck load of money on mail pieces and negative ads, and she didn’t respond. So, there are many of us sad in Carbondale that King Brad is back and that a person who would have been great mayor is not.

leigh: I don’t think so. The Simon loss has a lot to do with her shift in campaign tactics late.
For example, Simon trotted out a whole bunch of allegations about Cole’s travel expenses as the Mayor — except every one of the expenses, she moved or seconded to accept or reimburse as a councilwoman.
She tried to bring scandal to the race, but the problem was, there wasn’t really anything there.
Simon never came up with a concrete plan, either, for what she would do if she became Carbondale’s Mayor.
IN MY OPINION…she had campaign workers who undermined her squeaky clean image (which is richly deserved, she really is a good, kind person). Spray-painting X’s on Cole signs, for example, or spreading rumors about his ‘lies’ which really weren’t founded, or sending out allegations late that he was buying votes…I don’t think Simon actually authorized any of these things, but people working for her sure pushed them. So far, I’ve seen no proof of the latter two and no excuse for the first of the examples I just pointed out.
Plus, every major media endorsement went Cole’s way (even though, frankly, he’s been a jerk to many of the media members in this town lately). The Southern Illinoisan, Daily Egyptian, and Murphysboro American all went for Cole, with the DE switching from a primary endorsement of Simon. Carbondale Nightlife, an alternative paper authored by a Democratic Carbondale Council member, published an editorial by that council member strongly suggesting that nothing Simon said in the campaign was remotely close to accurate.
She got really bad advice. If she’d just kept up her strategy of, “I’m a nice person, I’m Paul Simon’s Daughter, We can make Carbondale great” she would have won by 10 points. Instead her workers turned into attack dogs and Carbondale voters did not buy it.

On the minor race side, I want to give a congratulations to Art Moore. He is a former Model Illinois Governor www.modelillinoisgovernment.org and it looks like he has taken the step to real government. We are always proud to see an alum shine.

I’m not all that shocked except for Joe Moore —I thought he would pull that out. Matlak should never have lost that race — but his constituent service was so AWFUL, and he refused to recognize the changes in the district.
On that same note… I wish, I hoped that this would be a wake-up call for the women that represented the near south side for many years, but it’s been too little, too late. The winners have worked their ******** off, and us transplanted Lincoln Park / Lakeview types will expect the same for the next 4 years.
Be careful what you ask for, you might get it!

The Carbondale race was bought & paid for by the GOP’s flood of money. Before that, the landlords funded his campaign. Cole’s no one’s mayor. He’s a puppet of business & Texas. Those who really know him aren’t impressed with a pretend full-time mayor that circumvents the democratic process every chance he gets. They don’t trust a trustfund baby from George Ryan’s former staff — especially one that sends him money for Christmas.

No question that the biggest win of the night is in 32. They put everything including the kitchen sink into the race for Ted, but couldn’t save a terrible alderman.
It’s the end of a century old dynasty. 32 now officially moves from a northwest side ward to lakefront/independent ward. There’s going to be a whole new face on that ward.

The low point in the last 48 hours was receiving the robocall from Lisa Madigan asking me to vote for Matlak. I have been a real supporter of the AG and her independence and that disappointed me. The high point was last night playing with my kids out front of my house and seeing how many people were flocking to the polling place at the end of our block–so many more than I have seen in my 15+ years here for a non-presidential election. I am estatic that Matlak is out. I concur with the comment above that constituent service has been so poor.

Agreed about the Lisa Madigan call, very disappointing. There are going to be a lot of people regretting their decision to buckle under to political pressure to support a has-been like Matlak. Madigan and Quigley quickly come to mind.
This was a victory for the people of that ward. History has been made.
