* Perhaps the best argument for signing a bill into law…

I'm just one voter, but if Governor @BruceRauner allows Illinois to become a sanctuary state, I will not support his reelection.

No way.

— Joe Walsh (@WalshFreedom) August 22, 2017

* Breitbart has also weighed in

Bruce Rauner, Republican Governor of Illinois, told the local press Friday he may sign a new bill passed by the heavily Democratic Illinois legislature to frustrate federal immigration enforcement.

Claiming it was supported by “the immigration community” in addition to the Illinois Sheriff’s Association and businesses, Rauner told WBEZ, Chicago’s FM public radio channel, that SB31 “seems very reasonable.” Rauner’s office did not respond to Breitbart News’s request to clarify to whom “the immigration community” referred. […]

One Illinois immigration hawk was unconvinced. “I think the biggest question Illinois taxpayers have for Governor Rauner and any legislator who would want to pass this bill is, ‘Does making it easier for illegal aliens to stay in Illinois improve the lives of Illinois residents?’” former Republican candidate for the U.S. Congress and Illinois Minutemen-founder Rosanna Pulido told Breitbart News.

She explained:

A twofer. Hmm. /snark

* From Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart…

“At a time when the violence in Chicago continues at alarming and unacceptable rates, local police need to be focused on crime and violence reduction. To do that effectively requires community cooperation and support, both of which diminish quickly if there is fear that reporting a crime or turning in an offender will lead to detention by immigration authorities. Signing the Illinois TRUST Act (SB31) into law will ensure everyone understands the role of local law enforcement in Illinois - to protect and serve, not to scare and harass.”

*** UPDATE ***   I was told this last week off the record, but it appears they’re now confirming it…

  1. Such a tough call, who to believe understands public safety policy better? Breitbart, Joe Walsh, and the Alt-Right…or Sherriff Tom Dart. It’s a coin toss.

  2. $4.5 Billion? Is there a source for that?

  3. would be nice if government officials would do a more clear explanation of why the Sanctuary City approach works, that bad guys do in fact get prosecuted and this approach helps witnesses feel safe. Super far left requests of late that anyone, even those with criminal record of even serious kind, should be left in USA need to stop it. Felony crimes are a bad thing.

  4. Veil: Actually with several hundred cook county jail inmates let out on electronic monitoring and now unaccounted for (per second city cop) perhaps it is a toss up.

Comment by DuPage Saint Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 2:15 pm

  5. If Bruce and Diana Rauner feel the need to appease Breitbart and Joe Walsh (the other Joe Walsh)… then the IPI hires and the silence on IPI cartoons makes sense.

The number 1, 2, even three question is…

“How will Breitbart and Joe Walsh help or hurt Diana Rauner’s Brand”

Emails tell me that the “Brand” dictates quite a bit.

  6. Amalia, how about some links to show how the “super far left” is making that argument.

Or is it just a few individuals?

Now if Bruce decides to sign HB40, whew, that will be some serious Radical Candor.

  8. Feeling lazy…is there a brief synopsis on SB 31 someone can post here? I read somewhere that this bill isn’t the “sanctuary state” bill that detractors say. And the sheriffs are on board. So, is it “reasonable” as Rauner says, or the end of the world as Breitbart claims?

  9. So GovJunk drives DeadbeatJoe away with a little immigration reform. Never thought it was that easy…could be ploy

Comment by Annonin' Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 2:24 pm

  10. - Amalia - is on it.

Immigration policy in the era of Trump has become so binary…no one is seeking any a middle ground. I don’t want local police engaging in immigration raids — that’s not their job and it would erode trust with the community.

But, I’m not sure I want police to be legally compelled by the state to ignore every single federal detainer request when an undocumented suspect is arrested.

Comment by LTR Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 2:28 pm

  11. @DuPage Saint: and Sheriff Curran (Lake County) and the IL Association of Police Chiefs? Do they count?
Why can’t folks sometimes believe there’s such a thing as a good compromise law?

Comment by Veil of Ignorance Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 2:32 pm

  12. This bill is a compromise. It’s not what hardliners on either side would want if they could get their own way.

    Comment by anon2 Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 2:38 pm

  13. @phocion:

The Sheriffs Association is neutral on the bill. The Chiefs of Police support it.

  14. Veil: I was knocking Dart whom I used to think was a sharp guy but now I wonder.. I don’t think this bill will do much one way or the other. If it helps and some police think it will hey go for it. Sooner or later this immigration stuff will be worked out. Not a fan of ripping up families. If it doesn’t do harm go for it.

Comment by DuPage Saint Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 2:46 pm

Comment by Qualifications Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 2:58 pm

  17. ” Shouldn’t their be minimum qualifications? Have you ever arrested anyone? Have you ever made a traffic stop? Have you ever solved a crime?”

Yeah I don’t think we need Sheriff’s office hopefuls going out and getting their token tickets and crime solving badges.

  19. ==In order to be elected a sheriff. Shouldn’t their be minimum qualifications?==

It’s mostly an administrative job in Cook County. It’s not like Dart goes out on patrol.

Besides, he’s had the job for over a decade now, who has any more relevant experience?

Comment by Arsenal Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 3:19 pm

  20. This is not a divisive issue. Assuming all illegal immigrants are law abiding good people we should help all of them we can afford to help.

We are Illinois, we can’t afford to help the people already here, much less accept more. There is nothing more to analyze.

If you are for this type of policy, you need to a) confirm you want your taxes raised to pay for it or b) state what state service you want cut to pay for it. It is the sad reality of IL.

Paul Simon said if you pay your bills first, you will have money for your programs. Well, we are not paying our bills, but want policy that costs more money?

Keep trying that socialism folks, maybe we can be the first people in the history of the planet to make it sustainable.

  22. Joe Walsh clearly needs to learn how to read or needs a primer on the legislative process. After all, it has been awhile since he was in the game.

The bill that passed both chambers has nothing to do with sanctuary cities and does not make this a sanctuary state. The bills prohibits law enforcement from arresting, searching or detaining any individual SOLELY on the basis of any immigration detainer or non-judicial immigration warrant. These are the warrants that are issued by federal employees without the approval of a court. The bill allows law enforcement to enforce these warrants if signed by a judge.

In my opinion, it really doesn’t do much, as this is basically the law already.

Comment by FTSIOH Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 3:22 pm

  23. Hey, the Patriot — READ THE BILL!!

This language doesn’t cost any money. In fact, it probably saves us money because law enforcement will no longer conduct illegal searches and seizures that result in civil lawsuits.

Comment by FTSIOH Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 3:24 pm

  24. Pew estimates that there are 450,000 undocumented immigrants in Illinois, about 3.5% of the population.

Perhaps RP can document how about 13% of state spending goes to them in “free services.” Other than just making it up.

Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 3:24 pm

  25. There is nothing “sanctuary” about the bill. All it does is prevent cops from becoming the immigration police, which is not their job.

  32. @the Patriot —
Even if this was a sanctuary bill (which it isn’t) it wouldn’t be the major cost that you suggest. Using local police to carry out immigration patrols, conduct raids and house detainees while they are processed ain’t free either. Better to let the feds do their job. And it’s not like undocumented folks don’t generate revenue for the state — they pay the sales, property, and payroll taxes that likely pay for many services they use - i.e. education.

Rip the band aid off Bruce, it’ll only hurt for a second and then everyone will be back in 14 months anyway.

Comment by DuPage Bard Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 3:53 pm

  35. Since when do facts matter to Breitbart and the Joe Walshes of the world.

Comment by Norseman Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 4:16 pm

  36. Actual Red… Illegals take more resources then they put in and, they are not paying property taxes or payroll taxes. They are paid cash and pay cash which helps employers and landowners show losses which makes more of us pay taxes.

I am not a doomsday guy on the immigration situation. Every issue as an Illinoisan is simple. If we do not start saying no, enforce the law, and get our house in order, in a few years we will not be in a position to help anyone.

Comment by the Patriot Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 4:16 pm

  37. ===they are not paying property taxes===

If they rent, they’re paying property taxes.

  38. Our president is going to Phoenix tonight because he’s fighting so hard for us real Americans, and this is the thanks he gets? We have the best president in our lifetimes, who’s doing so much for us and loves us so much. He deserves better than this.

Comment by Grandson of Man Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 4:33 pm

  39. I’m sort of surprised by this one. I’ve been trying to figure out Mr. Rauner’s goal, which recently has not seemed to seriously include being re-elected, and I thought he was positioning himself for a Trump admin post.

    However, this seems counter.

I honestly have no idea what Rauner is trying to do. He’s too far right for Illinois but not sufficiently to the right for a D.C. post.

Comment by Gooner Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 4:39 pm

  40. ==I thought he was positioning himself for a Trump admin post.==

I don’t picture Rauner as the type of person who would take a post in any administration where he wasn’t the top person (those two being Governor or President). He doesn’t need the position, and I don’t see his personality adapting to a position where he has to take orders.

Comment by Anonymous Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 4:46 pm

  41. This is not even close to the “Sanctuary City” stance claimed by AG Sessions, or any of the whiners on the right.

This compromise bill does not in any way protect those charged with serious crimes, or those with a warrant signed by a judge for immigration status problems. It adds, doesn’t diminish, law and order in our communities, according to most law enforcement officials. It will apparently cost some communities federal dollars, if that is found legal.

Comment by walker Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 5:16 pm

  42. There seems to be a fairly easy compromise to this smokescreen put up by sanctuary city advocates. Make it the stated policy that sanctuary city status will apply to any witness or victim of a crime. Everyone else has to go. There, fixed it for you.

Comment by Michael Westen Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 6:15 pm

  43. ==Make it the stated policy that sanctuary city status will apply to any witness or victim of a crime==

That’s already law for certain crimes.

Comment by Anonymous Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 7:36 pm

  44. Make it the law for every major crime and it will take away the need to coddle every illegal alien.

Comment by Michael Westen Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 8:35 pm

  45. ==Make it the law for every major crime and it will take away the need to coddle every illegal alien.==

Again, there’s already a visa program for what you’re suggesting.

It amazes me how little people who claim immigration to be such an important issue actually know about immigration laws.

Comment by Anonymous Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 8:37 pm
