*** UPDATED x2 *** Leaders meeting update

Posted in:

* Maybe progress or maybe something that just looks like progress. We’ll know later…

Lengthy talks today among leaders. Perhaps a sign of compromise? They just took another break. Will be back at 5:15.

*** UPDATE 1 ***  Been working the phones about another possible breaking story, so this is from the twitters…

Legislative leaders meeting just finished. Started at 1:30. GOP leaders say they are optimistic about talks.

5 hours later the leaders meeting has ended. Durkin says they have plans to meet again. "We are making progress" #twill

Leaders meeting is over. Leader Durkin said Republican leaders asked Madigan not to call for override tomorrow; he didn't say he wouldn't.

Republicans said the asked Speaker Madigan not to hold override vote tomorrow on SB1 as sign of good faith. Got no promises in response. https://t.co/Pq5Pjnzfjm

*** UPDATE 2 *** Leader Durkin said this to reporters

We are making progress. And I will just say we went through a lot of issues, down to the minutiae. And to me that is positive. It shows that there is a willingness to bring this to a negotiated settlement, and I would say that is the collective goal of each one of the leaders and including the governor.

Leader-Designate Brady said the Republicans emphasized to Madigan it would be “a gesture of good faith” if Madigan held off on an override vote tomorrow. But, he said, there was no commitment from Madigan.

Leader Durkin then said: “We’re in constant communication with the governor over this issue and we will continue to do that because we want to have a bill presented to him that he will sign with enthusiasm.”

  1. Well, the meeting was long. And maybe productive. Productive and long. Got it.

  2. Rauner, leaving the meeting: “You wouldn’t believe what Madigan said in there. That guy admitted to being the Zodiac Killer, but I thought he was still speaker back then…”

  4. Looks like they might be close a compromise. My sources tell me they’ve agreed that it should be an extra large, thin crust. At least half of it will be plain cheese, no agreement yet on the other half. The main point of contention appears to be whether to order it from Nancy’s or Gabatoni’s.

    Stay tuned for more updates.

  5. Just keep Rauner out of the meeting and there is hope.

  6. My guess is no compromise today. They are not close enough to the edge of the cliff yet…

  7. Maybe they should sneak the cartoon in the pizza box so Rauner can see it then.

  9. The governor was invited to the meeting, but as a white male, he has nothing more to add to the discussion.

  10. It’s close until they show rauner the deal then it’s not close.

  11. Any minute now as Rauner is having ISBE calculate the pizza numbers.

  12. If they actually can reach a deal- does it matter whether Rauner goes along- Durkin can get 4 votes and that is the ballgame.

  13. They’ve decided the pizza will be sliced into pie shaped pieces. Still debating on either 8 or 12 pieces

  15. –Durkin can get 4 votes and that is the ballgame.–

Huh? Durkin ain’t flipping on Bank Rauner.

If there’s a deal with Dems and four Republicans, it won’t be because of Durkin.

Durkin and Brady aren’t the bosses of their caucuses. Rauner is. He has all the money and jobs.

  16. Hopefully some of those who already said they would not run in 2018, will do the right thing. Do they want to be remembered as stopping school funding, or as a person who put the good of the people ahead of politics? Let us see who has the guts to make the vote happen.

  17. The other half will definitely have pepperoni and possibly another topping. Heated discussion on what goes best with pepperoni.
Great frustration from the sausage Olive and mushroom lovers.

  18. The Speaker is not going to accept a substantial compromise before forcing House Republicans vote ‘No’ on override motion at least once.

  19. The leaders all agreed on pizza, Rauner said it has to be pizza and tacos.

  21. Sen. Cullerton: “Compromise? Inconceivable.”

Comment by Northside Dude Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 7:13 pm

  22. –Word- your wrong- these negotiations are for real and they are not including Rasmussen–

I’m wrong about what? You sincerely believe Durkin and Brady would make a super-majority deal with Madigan and Cullerton that cuts out Rauner?

I’d suggest you check who funds the entire Illinois GOP, plus House and Senate GOP campaign committees.

There’s a slim possibility some House Republicans might join with Dems to end this on an override vote, but it won’t be due to Durkin’s urging.

Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 7:19 pm

  23. Rauner will come in at the last minute and demand it be a thin crust from Vic’s Pizza. He thinks that will be impossible since Vic’s closed years ago.

But guess what, there are still people around with the recipe.

Darn, now I want one. At least I have the recipe …

Comment by RNUG Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 7:21 pm

  24. “other half will definitely have pepperoni” Why spoil a perfectly good pizza with pepperoni? That would kill any deal.

Comment by Huh? Tuesday, Aug 22, 17 @ 7:43 pm

  25. –Leader Durkin then said: “We’re in constant communication with the governor over this issue and we will continue to do that because we want to have a bill presented to him that he will sign with enthusiasm.”–

Sue, I’m not seeing Durkin going his own way there, do you?
