In the end, House Republicans put up nearly as many votes for the bill as Democrats, even though the GOP has more than a dozen fewer members.
The second vote on the compromise plan drew 37 Democratic votes, up from 19 just hours before. Republicans provided 36 votes, up from 28.
One of the biggest “heroes” in this whole thing is House Republican Leader Jim Durkin. He kept the governor focused, he pushed the Democrats to a compromise and, in the end, he provided way more votes for the bill than was required.

House and Senate Republicans will need this cover. Very few of them voted to appropriate any money for their schools.

Turned out it was a Rauner bailout from the disastrous AV that was based on the “simple majority” mistake.

I said it many, many times… that Jim Durkin could be the most important person under the Dome, and could be THE person to save the Governor from himself and get wins for the Administration.
Can you even imagine… if the model yesterday… and Rauner not sabotaging, in actuality, or in the politics of Ads, Mail, Quotes… how much Durkin and Rauner could’ve gotten these 2 1/2 years… had Rauner let Durkin do the negotiating… and accepting… again, “and accepting”… wins.
Man, what would I have to beef about?

Ron. Its always for the children. Just like it was 30 years ago. Now they are adults and cant afford to live a middle class lifestyle in our state. Same will be said for the next generation. Springfield types may think a political win is throwing more money at an issue with no long term plan of paying for it. I cant and wont.

I have been hard on durkin for not tipping the scales to get things moving. Congrats on the progress.
It remains to be seen if the gov has learned anything. One day we had an agreement by all parties, the next day he dumped on it. Plenty of time for that later. Couldnt take a win for even a day.
Holding my breath on the senate. Is brady on board?

I did not expect it from Cassidy and Martwick. They should have known better. They DO know better. I’m shocked and disgusted.

Disagreements about particulars and process aside, I express my gratitude to leaders and legislators in the House. Thank you for getting the needed legislation crafted and passed and accomplishing monumental change in the way we fund our schools.

An embarrassment caused by an embarrassingly bad governor. Completely preventable.

This was a brilliant deal — both sides got what sells to their most ardent followers.
Dems got the resources for delivering services today. Repubs got the ideological symbol with future potential.

OW I agree with you 100%. I told Durkin when Rauner first got elected that he had the toughest job in Springfield. But he also had the biggest potential to look like the hero. Talked to him about 6 months ago and told him he was making a mistake by just cowtowing to Rauner. I’m glad he finally stepped up. The uprising in his own caucus probably what finally got him to see the light.

I’m proud of what our state did today. I’m just a little embarrassed for my party. I bristled lately at Republicans who nit pick hugely important bills and then take a symbolic, and partisan political stand in the face of clear progress. Then half of House Democrats go out there and almost sink this bill.
I hope in the future we can see more of these bills that pass with super majorities and leave the fringes of both parties stewing on the sides.

When Rauner signs the bill it would be time for backslapping. Don’t forget Durkin enthusiastically enabled a $15 billion debt and voted against the current budget. Hardly a cause for celebration.
