Within an hour of Illinois’ Governor Bruce Rauner signing into law a bill making Illinois the “latest sanctuary state,” the national watchdog group Judicial Watch filed a FOIA request with the governor’s office, looking for information about who the governor did and did not meet with before signing the bill into law Monday.
Illinois Review asked Judicial Watch’s Michael Bekesha why the national group was interested in Illinois’ new state law.
“For 10 years now, Judicial Watch has been interested in promoting the rule of law when it deals with illegal immigration. Around the country, we have been interested in sanctuary cities and sanctuary states. And Illinois has now become the latest sanctuary state, so we were interested in how that happened,” Bekesha said on the phone Monday afternoon.

My concern with Bruce Rauner… is not that he is friends with Rahm Emanuel, it’s that he is Rahm Emanuel… What I mean by that is he is transactional. There’s no foundation, it is just transactional. It is political expediency over principle. It is a willingness to renege and negotiate after the fact. And essentially pander and preen in any fashion that is accessible in order to try and salvage himself politically. That’s what Rahm Emanuel does. That’s what he does.

This is a bigger problem than folks here so far, have appreciated.
Rauner is seen as a failure by everyone, but to his supporters, he was their failure. Now, all they see is a failure dressed up in fake country garb.

In Dan Profts world, the only type of foundation is one built with his beliefs. Which tend to float between positions depending on the issue and who it’s aimed at. Like “corruption”

Rauner is showing desperation now regarding the upcoming election cycle. The problem is that when you try to increase your appeal you risk losing your base. This is going to be very interesting to watch the dance of the almost unelectable Governor.

As taken from the bill/law. “Nothing in this Section 15 (Trust Act) prohibits communication between federal agencies or officials and law enforcement agencies or officials.”

Rauner will win the nomination, the question is now, “How many ‘Real Conservative Republicans’ will turn on Rauner, come November 2018, when Rauner faces a Dem?”.

Perhaps deep thinkers Kass and Proft can explain what is “conservative” about detaining people in local jails without charge or warrant because someone suspects a possible violation of federal civil law.
Their “conservative,” liberty-loving, small government principles seem rather flexible here.

The more heckling and dismissing that folks unsupportive of this act get, the angrier the Fauner base becomes. They might end up getting quieted down with this “it’s not sanctuary” comments, but they are disgusted by Rauner and have had it.

That’s more of Uihlein’s money speaking than Proft.
Proft can’t mean this, and then have Besler move money for Dunkin, and take on the petty Downers Grove things and then claim piety is your hallmark or concern.
It never works that way.
It’s Uihlein saying that with monies for Proft.
With more time in his hands, I’m sure Besler could comcur with Proft…

Rauner’s problem wasn’t so much signing this bill as everything that came before it.
If he’d signed a law like this after a couple of compromise budgets, and sold it to his base as a very conservative bill for a blue state, he might have gotten away with this and brought some centrists back into the fold.
As it stands, he’s alienated a lot of centrists, couldn’t (and, thankfully, wouldn’t prevent a budget override), and doesn’t have a lot of goodwill to spare with the center or the right.

Is it possible that, while we analyze the politics from our high-tech electronic devices, there is a box truck full of undocumented immigrants risking their lives trying to get to Chicago, or somewhere in Illinois?
What do they have to look forward to? The things that people who live outside of normal legal protections do.
They will be oppressed by dirty employers who don’t pay or protect according to labor laws. They will be oppressed by dirty landlords that over-charge and under-deliver on a needed new home, all the while knowing there is no legal recourse for the tenant. You get the picture.
Granted it may be better than from where they come, but it’s not right and laws like this just encourage more of the same oppression.
This country needs immigration reform, better border and visa controls, and act like it wants to take care of legal immigrants entering our country.
Rauner should not have signed this. Folks efforts would be much more week-placed if they were pushing for legal immigration reform.

Actually the main plaintiff in the Moreno lawsuit to led to a Federal judge putting a halt to detainers was, in fact, a US Citizen. Another on was a lawful permanent resident.

A competent governor with a competent staff would have prepared for interviews and press questions regarding the legislation. Going around and repeating, “the system is broken,” doesn’t cut it.

Profit, oops, Proft is not wrong about Rauner as transactional. He’s actually worse than that, but it doesn’t mean Proft is right about many, many other things. Being ‘principled’ is a sketchy term, depending what those principles are and how they ‘transactionally’ affect other people. History is littered with principled mass murderers.

It was simply a political decision by Rauner. He’s had a bad year, particularly a bad Summer. A trusted advisor probably told him that if he’s going to be reelected he’d better move towards the political center. They are hoping that his base, particularly downstate, will gradually forgive him for this and accept the notion that he’s still better than a Democrat.

Vanilla Man I believe you when you’re speaking of yourself. Them? We all can only guess based on the focus, tone and target of their messages.
Little known fact: Illinois in its first Constitution in 1818 specifically gave full rights to all residents who were deemed “illegal immigrants” by Federal standards of the time. We had a lot of French original settlers, and those illegal migrants into Indian lands, to embrace in our community. Current Federal courts have determined that non citizens have most rights afforded to citizens.

This is the kind of thing an already-disinterested base uses to talk itself into staying home. Not en masse; the vast majority of Republicans will still vote for Rauner. But swap this out for a lefty issue and see the similarities with Clinton last year.

Former Rauner voters seem to be split between
(A) disappointment and anger that he’s failed to compromise resulting in a meltdown of the State’s finances and
(B) disappointment and anger that he’s somehow lost his ideological purity by signing any kind of deal at all.
I wonder how all that disappointment and anger plays out for his reelection chances in 2018

Arsenal has a good point. This upcoming gubernatorial election has a lot in common with the last presidential election. Neither party is going to wind up with a candidate that many good about supporting. It will be a lessor of two evils judgement call again.

Hmmm. An observation sent to me from a relative living in another state now and working in the financial field. Follows ILlinois political news……
How will this help ILlinois’ financial situation? No money for schools, social programs or debt. As more people come to Illinois who need these services and education, how does this law help the citizens of ILlinois cope with their financial mess? Sounds like the last tax hike is only the beginning.

Some of y’all act like this is some new thing. It isn’t. Ask your local law enforcement if they are spending any time going around looking to round up illegal immigrants. They aren’t Little will change with this bill, except now its codified. All this does is basically tell the feds that immigration is their problem, as it should be.

I think the Governor was in a tight spot here. Legally speaking, the TRUST Act basically codifies with existing lawsuits establish; you can’t hold individuals on non-judicial administrative warrants. Oh, and you can’t pull a Joe Arpaio and arrest folks simply for being undocumented; that’s ICE’s job. Photos from the signing show tons of law enforcement present. If they don’t object to it, then what’s all the ruckus really about?

I’m not a Proft fan, but I will admit that he is exactly right about what he says that about Emmanuel. Rahm has no core values whatsoever and everyone who has followed his career knows it. But Proft is wrong about Rauner. Rauner does have a foundation: his fundamental core belief in destroying unions.
