Dart won’t run for AG

Posted in:

* An aide to Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart just called to say the sheriff won’t be running for attorney general.

It might be easier to ask who else won’t run.

  1. I will not run either.

  2. That means Ed Burke Jr won’t be running for Sheriff.

Bad day for the Burke kids.

  3. If people are saying “no”, does that mean the field is being cleared for someone behind the scenes?

  4. What has Ken Dunkin been doing? maybe Rauner could prop him back up as AG. Jason Gonzales?

  5. It’s tough for Dart, with family considerations… and being the multi-elected Cook County Sheriff… it would be tough to make the run for AG

  6. Um some of you people are thinking too hard into it. Rauner wanted a Madigan crony to run so he can run using the Madigan narrative. He can’t do that with Drury. I think the dems should get behind Drury.

  7. I’m not running for AG either. /s

  8. I think we’ll soon hear that Yukon Cornelious is out too.

Comment by Deft Wing Tuesday, Sep 19, 17 @ 4:23 pm

  9. I think Drury should just get left behind. He can return to being a prosecutor, that which he likes to talk about.

    Comment by 360 Degree TurnAround Tuesday, Sep 19, 17 @ 4:23 pm

  10. So if other Madigan quits, will Drury stay in House and run for speaker? I just like watching him get new signs made.

  11. == Ed Burke Jr. ==

Please tell me that’s a joke.

  12. Ed Burke Jr running for Sheriff when Dart seeks higher office has been the plan for at least 6 years now.

Comment by Fax Machine Tuesday, Sep 19, 17 @ 5:50 pm

  13. “Is field being cleared?”
For the big three, GOV, AG and SOS, no. Generally they wait to see who’s in, and even then, its never “cleared” beforehand. Example: 1998 Dem SOS primary (White and Severns stayed in even as Tim McCarthy was favored) and 2002 AG primary (Madigan vs. Schmidt)

The lower ones … sometimes but often not terribly successful.

Thats my thing about “I sure hope the Democratic Party of Illinois puts forward someone who is x or y”. Doesnt work like that. People have to put themselves forward, then perhaps one will be favored….

Note: in the pre-Shakman & Rutan days, it was a much different story. Then the parties were powerful entities of themselves as far as statewide races went. Not so much anymore.

No DuPage or Cook County foot soldiers to rely upon.

  14. Is Dart up for re-election next year?

Comment by Arthur Andersen Tuesday, Sep 19, 17 @ 5:56 pm

  15. ===I think the dems should get behind Drury.===

With no friends or outside money helping him in the election, he could claim to be the most un-beholden candidate in a position where that status is generally considered an asset. But, please, no. Really. No.

  16. I am still thinking about it…

    You gonna finish that?

So you think a candidate with friends and beholden to someone like Rauner or Madigan is better?

Comment by Real Tuesday, Sep 19, 17 @ 6:52 pm

  18. Tom Dart is the new Chris Kennedy. He ain’t runnin for nothin. He doesn’t have that fire anymore, and he is afraid of taking the risk and having to do the work to run for higher office, because that actually would require hard work. He is fine with a second tier office and recycling the same issues and topics over and over again, simply mailing it in everyday. He lost his originalism and political prowress somewhere along that way and it is too bad because it’s a lot of wasted talent. So can we please just stop entertaining any conversations about “Dart for…” in the future.

Comment by NoSurprise Tuesday, Sep 19, 17 @ 10:57 pm

  19. Why not? Dart would be the leader in the race. He doesn’t like being Sheriff.

Clearly not what I was saying, Real. Just saying please not Drury.

  21. Tom Dart… afraid of “hard work” “2nd tier office”

Thats why he works out of an office at 26th and California, right? The first cook county sheriff to do so in umpteen years. Maybe because unlike others that have held that office, he’s actually committed to trying to improve the place and the lives of those held there?

    Give me a break. Sheesh.

  22. - NoSurprise -

Being Cook County Sheriff is a more stressful job and requires much more hard work than Attorney General.

Comment by Roman Wednesday, Sep 20, 17 @ 8:35 am

  23. Low level - the sheriff actually doesn’t work at the jail. He’s spends all his time in his Maywood office. Only at the jail if there is a camera crew there. Everyone who actually knows anything about the sheriff’s office knows this. But u r def right that in 2006 he was the first to work from there in about 20 years. That just ended shortly after however and now no one is there more than a day a week.

Comment by NoSurprise Wednesday, Sep 20, 17 @ 9:19 am

  24. So he “mails it in” from the Maywood office? OK. Would seem to me being in Maywood is still a conscious choice to be closer to the situation on the ground than the county building.

Really doubt he’s mailing it in. Even if I accept that, I’ll take that version over the guy who “mails it in” from 5th floor at city hall. You know, the guy who loves to raise money from all places near and far…
