Annnd office fire drill today confirmed something I've long suspected - crippling cynicism would kill all political types in an emergency

During the reception in Secretary of State Jesse White’s office after the Steve Schnorf “celebration of life,” a loud alarm went off. People barely looked up. Nobody left as ordered. Instead, one of his top employees made a call to see if the alarm was real.

  2. Have you ever noticed how many people rush to assist when a car alarm goes off?

  4. Gonna show my age.

I’ve seen a change in the number of people at the Statehouse willing to pay attention and leave their offices due to alarms. The number willing to leave has dropped by large numbers since Play It Again Sams closed.

    Just saying.

  5. All of these people must have lived in the dorms in college. For a year I lived with the 2am fire alarm once or twice a week.

  7. RUNG, why yes it was. Many times it was a true “shelter from the storm”.

Yep, and the longer it goes, the more you start rooting for the thief.

  9. You find yourself believing a lot more in fate when the fire alarm goes off in your dorm at 2 A.M. during a central Illinois winter.

  10. I ignore car alarms regularly, because most of them are so sensitive they go off if someone walks too close to the car. And because I am in Chicago, where parallel parkers tap the car in front of or behind them and, yes, the alarms go off.

If there were ever an actual car burglar, I’d be shocked.
