*** UPDATED x1 - Et tu, Tillman? *** Rauner scrubbed from GOP “family values” event

Posted in:

* Illinois Review

Despite being featured as a main attraction for weeks, Governor Rauner won’t be attending Saturday’s Southwest Suburban Republican Picnic after all, says Cook County GOP Chairman Sean Morrison.

Apparently, the sudden change in plans resulted from the governor signing into law a measure Thursday that would require taxpayers to pay for abortions for low income women and state employees.

“Governor Rauner had committed to attending our Republican Family Picnic several weeks ago,” Morrison told Illinois Review. “In lieu of Thursday’s bill signing, it was agreed that the governor’s attendance would only serve as a distraction to our goal of a Republican family values event.”

The featured speaker at the Village Green in southwest suburban Palos Park from noon to 3:00 PM will now be IL GOP primary candidate Erika Harold.

…Adding… I just talked to Morrison who said it was a mutual decision.

*** UPDATE ***  Illinois Channel

But few individuals have been more supportive of Gov Rauner over the years, than John Tillman, President of the conservative think-tank, Illinois Policy Institute.

In fact, Gov Rauner this summer raided the staff of the IPI when he restructured his senior management, selecting Christine Rasmussen, an IPI Vice President, to become his new Chief of Staff.

So when the Gov loses the support of the Illinois Policy Institute’s CEO, John Tillman, who took to Facebook to call the Governor “Benedict Rauner”…then one wonders…who’s left to support Governor Rauner for re-election?

Here’s the post: John Michael Tillman “Benedict Rauner going back on his word and signing HB40. Whether you are pro life or pro choice, a politician loses when he gives his word to many people and goes back on it, including to Cardinal Cupich. Further, if you care only about economic issues, he has put that entire agenda at risk by betraying those to whom he gave his word.”

Well, it’s on now.

  1. Maybe they should primary Rauner with Erika?

Has Erika just become the GOP rising star overnight?

  2. In 2014 he made it pretty clear he was pro-choice.

I get that he promised them a veto.

But it seems pretty disingenuous for them to pretend like this was a big surprise. It basically means that in 2014 they were okay when they thought he was lying to get elected and that in 2017 they’re upset when he lied to them to stop them from shooting their party — and their party’s primary monetary source in the foot.

  4. What family values do Republicans believe Rauner holds? Honesty? Grace? Kindness? Care for the poor, the disabled, the old? Unity? I really am curious. Guess the anti-abortion people are learning about his lack of values now, too.

  5. Meh.

Rauner, and any pretense with “GOP”, was only predicated by the financial, “transactional” relationship.

Rauner just doesn’t need any pretense anymore.

    Rep. Morrison,

You want social services closed, some designed to keep families together… but… HB40 was too far… ?

    Interesting.

  6. Sweeeeet.

  7. In 2014 the GOP was okay with Rauner’s pro choice position; now that tax $ will fund abortions the GOP is all up in arms. That sounds par for the course - let those unwanted babies pull themselves by the bootstraps.

  8. Meh. Do you know how long the drive is from Winnetka to Palos Park? In Saturday traffic?

They’re doing Rauner a favor. He’ll probably use the extra time to mow the lawn, maybe get some laundry done, or count more of his money. Basic chores, like the rest of us do on an early fall Saturday.

I would bet the entirety of my bank account that this will not happen.

  10. So who WILL vote for Rauner in 2018?

  11. “So who WILL vote for Rauner in 2018?”

Please refer to the 2016 election for POTUS - you may find your answer.

  15. “betraying those to whom he gave his word.” When has 1.4% word being any good?

Comment by Huh? Friday, Sep 29, 17 @ 4:44 pm

  16. We sort of knew this, but Rauner is going to go pure negative - both because of his own lack of accomplishments, and because he will need to make Republican voters who are enraged at him hate Madigan & the Dem nominee even more in order to get them to come out and vote.

A big reason Quinn lost in 2014 is because the a lot of black voters didn’t see the point in coming out to vote. If a lot of conservatives feel the same way, Rauner will be in big trouble.

How will Rauner fill any upcoming vacancies now in the GA without Tillman’s blessing?

  22. I don’t think this helps Rauner re-establish rapport with his right flank:

  25. I wonder how all this plays into the long-running AFSCME drama. I assume unions are still the arch enemy — even with a pro-choice Benedict Arnold.

    At least they have *that*.

  27. Funny that it’s only now the IL GOP wants to claim the guy is a lying snake. Not one of these courageous figures had any problem when he was repeatedly lying about his conversations with the speaker, telling everyone how a bunch of D reps and senators secretly support the TA, claiming his budgets were balanced, etc. These mopes deserve having Rauner as their standard bearer.

  28. I wonder what the next IPI cartoon will look like?

Comment by HoneyBadger Friday, Sep 29, 17 @ 5:06 pm

  29. You pick your battles. This may garner Rauner as many supporters as he loses. Although I don’t approve of a pol backtracking on a position or promise, after the big “if you like your plan you can keep your plan–if you like your doctor you can keep your doctor” lie I think anybody who expects truth out of any politician is naive.

Comment by Responsa Friday, Sep 29, 17 @ 5:08 pm

  30. Looks like if I see Rauner around Springfield this weekend I’ll have to give him a hug, I think he needs one after this week. I’ll also make him a mix tape to help deal with all of the breakups.

Comment by Swift Friday, Sep 29, 17 @ 5:09 pm

  31. Funny how Tillman didn’t call him a traitor when he broke his campaign promise and said he would veto the bill. I guess betrayals are okay when you agree with the result.

  32. ==This may garner Rauner as many supporters as he loses.==

    Sure, OK.

Where are the pro-choice legislators saying they’ll support Rauner now, when they didn’t before?

Comment by Arsenal Friday, Sep 29, 17 @ 8:23 pm

  33. Yes. Interpersonal trust is essential among political allies and opponents alike. Your word is your bond in much of governmental deal-making, unlike business/labor negotiations.

However, Tillman is risking his own economic and governmental objectives as well, if he holds fast on Pro-life as essential to his agenda.
