Rick Scott makes his case with PR stunt

Posted in:

* This looks more like a campaign appearance for Gov. Rauner than a legit raiding trip

Florida’s governor is leading a raiding party through Illinois in hopes of taking some of the state’s employers back to the Sunshine State with him.

Gov. Rick Scott arrived in Chicago Wednesday in a winter coat and scarf. He told reporters that he and his delegation are speaking to businesses and site selectors in hopes that they will choose to relocate to Florida.

Scott explained the fiscal situation of his state’s economy compared to Illinois.

“We’re continuing to reduce our taxes,” Scott said. “We’ve reduced taxes 75 times and cut 25 percent of our state debt.”

He hammered Chicago and Illinois tax rates and their effect on business.

“Rahm Emanuel is raising your taxes. The Illinois state legislature is raising your taxes,” he said. “It’s making it more difficult for companies to do business.”

* CBS 2

As he stood along the Magnificent Mile, wearing a top coat and scarf to shield himself against the morning’s 40-degree temperatures, the Republican governor said warmer weather isn’t the only big difference between Florida and Illinois. […]

Scott’s visit comes just two days after Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner launched his re-election campaign. Scott said he believes Rauner has tried very hard to grow the Illinois economy.

“While he’s trying to keep the taxes low here, and the regulation low, his legislature is hurting the Illinois economy,” he said. “Your taxes are too high. You don’t cut regulation enough.”

I’m not sure if anyone asked Gov. Scott if he planned to stop by an Illinois National Guard base while he was here to thank them for their help with hurricane relief. Gov. Rauner dispatched 800 guard troops to Florida last month.

    That’s what’s happening here
    A Koch brothers

    Yeah, run with that Republicans.
    Dude
You can’t hide the failure of Rauner

Comment by Honeybear Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 10:53 am

  28. I think it is pretty cool that Rauner can get some fellow republicans into the state to explain exactly why Rauner is one huge failure. Maybe if he would have actually tried to do his job, he may have had some success. But no, he had to demonize and lie to all the people he needed to pass an agenda. So the “reelect me and I will still complain about all the stuff I didn’t get done and won’t get done” campaign grows larger. Good luck with that.

Do you want me to pull up quote after quote where “Pat Quinn failed” and in the very same instances, Rauner failed?

We could start with bond rate downgrades.

Bruce Rauner fails. Candidate Rauner tells me so.

Heck, 4 GOP Governors think Rauner is so grossly inept they mock Rauner and his failures as Illinois loses to those states.

Governors explaining how another governor fails is priceless.

BAIER: So what would be different in a second term?

Then there’s this from March 2017, when Illinois won third place in the Site Selection magazine 2016 Governors Cup, for business expansions and relocations:

    >> “Illinois has the best location and the hardest working people of any state in the country, and this honor illustrates job creators want to utilize our strengths,” said Governor Bruce Rauner.

They don’t have as many overpaid state and local workers, Truth, and most of their construction for housing is non-union. That’s a big part of the reason, as well as the fact that hospitality industry jobs tend to pay less, and they’ve got far more of those jobs than Illinois. We here in the rustbelt are supplementing nearly every category of revenue for Florida.

The massive revenue they raise from tourism taxes help pay for nearly everything in Fla. But, we do get a sunny vacation from that baragin.

I don’t have a calculation for how many seniors have retired there but we are supplementing their income though our taxes- SSI bailouts and medicare- plus ole’ ‘Recruitin’ Rick” is ripping of medicare so he adds in Rauner’s favorite savings line item “fraud and waste” just to stick it to you one more time.

All of the massive federal employees also falsely prop up Florida’s government employee (not market) economy.

They could probably lower taxes eve more since they will continue to get federal bailouts in their low tax (because you are paying) nirvana.

And when disaster strikes Florida (which is not infrequent and usually BIG ticket) ole’ Recruitin’ Rick sticks his hands in your pocket again. Sure, he could have reduced your costs by protecting wetlands which create a safety buffer from storm surge but then that wouldn’t be bidness’ friendly. So yo pay.

  63. You are a Republican who does only criticizes Republicans and never Speaker Madigan. In fact you too would change none of his policies.

The one Republican you align yourself more than any other is Jim Edgar.

He bragged of phony surpluses while kicking the pension can up the Edgar Ramp while capitulating to Speaker Madigan. I guess that is governing to you. Instead of solving Illinois problems, take the easy route and keep the special interests happy.

Very strange. As far as HB 40 I agree it is a terrible bill because, like you I am a practicing Catholic. That bill makes us one of the only 5 states in America to allow this in one of only 7 countries in the world to allow abortion past 20 weeks. Yes Illinois is out of step. The over the top rhetoric on this issue from Springfield was a disgrace.

Unfortunately both of the presumed candidates for Governor support this ,so my vote like so many others will not hinge on this issue because they agree.

  64. Another thing about Florida:

Its private school system (tax credit-funded) is entirely without oversight, hiring people who aren’t college graduates, operating in facilities which violate building codes for schools, etc. etc.

Among education policy scholars who study charters/voucher schools, Florida has a national reputation, and it’s anything but positive.

The Orlando Sentinel has been running a major investigative series on this subject.

  65. ===You are a Republican who does only criticizes Republicans…===

… who, as Rep. Breen points out, enabled Rauner and Raunerism and Breen to had enough of the phony that is Bruce Rauner.

=== In fact you too would change none of his policies•==

… except workers’ comp, fair maps… but you keep pretending.

===The one Republican you align yourself more than any other is Jim Edgar===

Yep. He’s no fan of Rauner too. Lots of what he said, I’ve either agreed or said myself in the past.

===He bragged of phony surpluses while kicking the pension can up the Edgar Ramp…===

Yeah, I’m gonna stop you there and remind you, this is “governors own” as Rauner owns his 2+ years. So thanks for making my point. Rauner owns his failures.

The rest is a rant, adding nothing while you admit Rauner, like the Edgar Ramp, governors own their messes.

===Unfortunately both of the presumed candidates for Governor support this ,so my vote like so many others will not hinge on this issue because they agree===

As a phony conservative then, just accepting Rauner is no different then a Dem, what will be different? Bills paid. No hostages, no governor trying to destroy illinois.

Bruce Rauner fails, the Edgar Ramp owning tells me so.

  66. Too bad that FL will be consumed by rising sea levels and continued ginormous hurricanes brought about by climate change…one of my favorite columnists in the Trib, Rex Huppke grew up there and his columns deriding FL are some of his bests…These GOP governors are so lame…

  68. “Illinois politicians think it is alright to use taxpayer money to end the life of the unborn child before they have a chance to reach old age.”

Thank God. Too many unwanted people as it is. Good point.

“Our property tax bill went down this year in Florida.

Can any Illinois resident say the same?

And, if they can, please include the location”

    First, what’s your location?

Second, how many people in your location have been murdered because someone felt like “standing their ground”? Here, we have none. Just regular old self-defense for those who kill others.

Also, we don’t have the responsibility of bearing 50% of the craziest stories our nation has. Florida is like a big mental health hospital, except nobody knows they’re admitted.
