* Casino fight goes up in smoke

Some of the association’s individual casino members are softening their positions against smoking bans, saying they would support a nationwide, federal ban - especially if it included tribal casinos. With such a blanket prohibition, the logic goes, no one casino could benefit by allowing smoking - and drawing smokers from a non smoking casino.

  1. I was wondering why your updates dont mention illeagal immigrants are threatining a state senator. It has recieved some coverage but I was wondering if there is a bias involved in your ignoring a group of criminals threatining a state senator if she doesnt vote to give them there way.

  2. New CTA boss Ron Huberman is this close to eliminating office jobs in the upper levels of management and administration as early as this week. Cut. Cut. Cut. Snip. Snip. Snip. Isn’t belt-tightening slimming.
But watch for these belt-tightening casualties to re-surface in other areas of State of Illinois government.
With even fatter salaries, It’s a HUGE SHELL GAME!

  3. “Fed Up,” can’t you even wait to complain until I have finished posting stories this morning? Take a deep breath, please.

  4. Rich, while not part of the morning shorts, can you come up with a good question of the day regarding gas prices? Here is a suggestion. Many people insist on buying American made cars because they want to support American workers (or its just a sense of American pride). Others buy American cars because good paying union jobs are on the line if American car sales plummet. With the price of gas approaching $4 per gallon, do you continue to purchase big american cars, or do you purchase a foreign car with better gas mileage, perhaps even a hybrid?

  5. Do casino owners really believe that a federal smoking ban should also cover native american casinos? This thinking would lead me to believe that the casino owners are the descendents of the same folks that felt that they had the right to take the native americans from their land and banish them to another place.

OK so I can go shell out the bucks for a Honda Insight to get 60 mpg city for an average yearly fuel cost of $405, or keep driving my Jeep Liberty for an average yearly fuel cost of $1155.

I don’t believe that I can pay for the Insight with the $750 in fuel savings per year.

  7. Tell me again why casinos think that they’re not already loosing business from gamblers who do not desire to play in smoke-filled casinos. It would seem to me that smoke-free casinos would not only be a good public health policy but would also be a competitive advantage for any such casino.

Is this an acknowledgement by casinos that most gamblers are also smokers? Could they be betting on the idea that both activities are prone to addiction? Surely, they’re not considering that somone addicted to tobacco might also be more easily addicted to gambling, are they?
