* I’m out of the office for the rest of the afternoon. Please keep your discussion as Illinois-centric as possible (and, yes, while there is a tenuous local connection to today’s national developments, steer clear of it) and be nice to each other. Thanks.

  3. Harmon urges State Board of Elections to withdraw Illinois from Crosscheck voter system
SPRINGFIELD – Senator Don Harmon (D-Oak Park) issued the following statement urging the State Board of Elections to withdraw from the controversial Crosscheck voter registration program:
“In the past weeks, scrutiny has grown regarding the use of the Interstate Voter Registration Crosscheck program. I have read with grave concern the allegations of misuse of private data by other states, ostensibly to prevent voter fraud, but actually to suppress votes.

Anti-fraud mechanisms employed in Illinois must protect and preserve, rather than threaten, the sacred right to vote. That is non-negotiable.

We have multiple tools at our disposal. I urge the State Board of Elections to withdraw from Crosscheck so we can ensure other states’ election authorities won’t use Illinois’ data to suppress voters in their states.”

  5. –Anybody think Pat Quinn has a real chance?–

In that crowded of a field, sure he does based on name recognition alone. He knows that from past experience. Give him credit for picking his spots. But 28% in what one commenter claims was a push poll isn’t that great.

There is always hope that Illinois voters could shoot themselves in the foot. Again.

  7. @ughhh

Too soon to see how Zach Miller’s leg goes, but I’m hoping the pension system is like Johnny Knox’s back. It looks fatal for a bit, but through a lot of hard work and rehabilitation it manages to walk on its own again.

Side note: Prayers for Miller and his family and kudos to Knox for rehabbing that horrendous injury.

  8. Lotta ifs on the AG Dem primary…Quinn does have name recognition, but I wonder if Dems might pull R ballots to pump up Ives vote total in a mischief making move. In 2014 D’s helped McCann in primary. Some of those were Bernie supporters who wanted to avoid Hillary but voted local.

  9. If Javy Baez ever gets discipline in the strike zone, he can be better than Altuve.

    That shorty is the goods.

Comment by wordslinger Monday, Oct 30, 17 @ 3:13 pm

  10. == Anybody think Pat Quinn has a real chance? ==

Right now, I’d give him 5:3 odds in the primary and about 9:8 in the general.

  11. “So, whats in worse shape, our Pension System or Zach Miller’s Leg?”

I’m not sure, but I’ll take odd on which one heals faster.

Also, each of the benefactors have guaranteed $.

  12. The ceiling for Baez is really high. He’s got a ways to go to fully reach his potential and that’s great for the club.

    They need to trade Schwarber.

The value of Schwarber went down a few times last year, first with the slump, then going “down”, then the playoff fielding error, reminding everyone of the fielding liability.

Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Oct 30, 17 @ 3:18 pm

  13. –I wonder if Dems might pull R ballots–

I don’t see that happening if they have some big primary battles on their side that are not foregone conclusions. So far Gov, AG, and a chance to unleash some soda tax anger in Cook County might cut against that.

No. Too much at stake in the governor’s race.

  17. –The ceiling for Baez is really high.–

Off the charts. Russell, too. Gotta respect that strike zone.

Theo has cleaned house on coaches. That’s a warning shot to Crazy Uncle Joe. The Cubs had no game plan in the playoffs. The batters wouldn’t take a walk, the relievers gave them away like candy.

It was just bad baseball, all the way around, which was very disappointing because they had played very well down the stretch.

Davey Martinez replaces Dusty in DC. That will lower the tension considerably at Wrigley when Sandberg is around, with his new gia-pet doo. Just keep Palmeiro away, too, when Ryno’s in town.

Comment by wordslinger Monday, Oct 30, 17 @ 3:38 pm

  18. Down south if Dems see Pritzker or Kennedy as foregone conclusions, and the AG race as over…i could see crossover in support of Ives just to irritate Bruce.

  19. ===Davey Martinez replaces Dusty in DC. That will lower the tension considerably at Wrigley when Sandberg is around, with his new gia-pet doo. Just keep Palmeiro away, too, when Ryno’s in town===

Always the bad side-story to those clubs and Palmiero getting shipped out of town and Ryno probably in a bad place in that clubhouse.

===Theo has cleaned house on coaches. That’s a warning shot to Crazy Uncle Joe.===

Agreed. The team that won the series against the Nats and got beat by the Dodgers had a Skipper that lacked, not the coaches.

    This is spot on…

===The Cubs had no game plan in the playoffs. The batters wouldn’t take a walk, the relievers gave them away like candy===

Undisciplined on the mound and at the plate, no strategy in how to pitch to opponents or how to handle their own at-bats.

It was 25 guys playing not one club.

The lack of focus was glaring against the Nats, but exposed to its heights (or lows) durning the Dodgers series was painful.

Yes, I’m sure they all were tired, especially mentally, but Maddon had no answers and didn’t help in finding them

  20. –I wonder if Dems might pull R ballots–

A better thing to wonder about is Labor’s move. AFSCME almost pulled it off in the 2014 primary, but something tells me Lynch & Co. aren’t as excited about Ives, even with membership not on board with JB. They’ll show up to the Democratic primary just to vote against Pat Quinn again. The same probably goes for the operators and building trades, who wanted McCann as an option for its membership that votes in GOP primaries.

  21. -LizPhairTax- ““Boneless Chicken Wings” are fraud”

Truer words have never been typed. they’re clearly not wings and it’s questionable if they’re chicken. And with commercial meat processing standards, it’s unlikely they’re truly boneless, either.

    Fraud. Perfidy even.

  22. How long did it take for the appellate court to decide in favor of afscme on back pay last time? I know people are still waiting to get paid but am just trying to get a feel for how much longer we’ll have to wait this time, knowing that whoever loses will appeal and we’ll have to wait a lot longer.

  23. Very happy there are choices (although some not the best) for a variety of offices. Wish the Republicans would “allow” more choices in the primary. As an independent, I always vote in the primary that gives me real choices.

  24. Pat Quinn has supporters like me who will work for him again. In a fractured Democratic field, he could win.

No odds on the general election yet.

  25. In a sense, I am mildly relieved that the Cubs did not reach the World Series this season. I think that Houston would have swept the Cubs in four straight.

    Comment by W Flag Monday, Oct 30, 17 @ 4:41 pm

  26. A couple of pet peeves / consumer protection bills I would like to see passed in Illinois (since it doesn’t seem to work at the national level):

    1) Requiring the cable companies to post a clear menu / pricing schedule for all their bundles and offerings

    2) A “no call” bill (use the national registry) with penalities where the telemarketer is assumed guilty until proven innocent. Heck, just make it an automatic small claims court nuisance fine of $50 or $100 plus court costs. And as long as I am dreaming, include the political action and campaign committees use the no call list also.

Comment by RNUG Monday, Oct 30, 17 @ 5:05 pm

  27. –2) A “no call” bill (use the national registry) with penalities where the telemarketer is assumed guilty until proven innocent.–

RNUG, do you really need that land line? I’m the last to get on board with new technology, but I haven’t had a land line for 15 years.

Comment by wordslinger Monday, Oct 30, 17 @ 5:12 pm

  28. -wordslinger-

The telemarketers call our cell phones slso.

Comment by RNUG Monday, Oct 30, 17 @ 5:24 pm

  29. And the only reason I’ve kept a landline also is because it’s easier for Mrs RNUG to hear on it versus the flip cell phone. Can’t get her to use a smartphone with a decent speaker, except in the newer car.

  30. == but I haven’t had a land line for 15 years.==

    And no one noticed? lol.

  31. To those that posted Friday comparing Pat Quinn to Jerry Brown, the more apt comparison is Ohio’s Mike DeWine (the Newt-wave put DeWine in the Senate, the George W. Bush 2006-wave took him out). Brown got arrested in Mississippi protesting for Civil Rights - can’t see Quinn doing that.

Comment by We Can Hope Monday, Oct 30, 17 @ 7:00 pm

  32. == A “no call” bill ==

RNUG- Check out NoMoRobo.com. It doesn’t work with all phone companies, but it eliminates 9.5 out of ten unwanted calls in my house and is a free service. Worth it all to never have to listen to another Peter Roskam “Townhall” invitation on the voicemail.

  33. ===If Javy Baez ever gets discipline in the strike zone, he can be better than Altuve.===

Big If. I may be wrong but MVP Altuve has that something that Baez doesn’t.

Comment by justacitizen Monday, Oct 30, 17 @ 8:02 pm

  34. Just, “if” is a big word, indeed. It’s all about the strike zone with Baez.

He went 253/14/59 in 2016 to 273/23/75 in 2017. Strikeout to walk ratio in 2017 was very bad, 144 to 30.

But he’s 24, on a rookie contract and the best defensive player in baseball. He could absolutely play short on most teams. And if you can play short, you can play center and any other position except catcher.

Speaking of catcher, Contreras is the next Yaddy. Except a much better hitter.

  35. RNUG, if your cell service is with Verizon, they are selling (of course) a new SPAM call blocker/Cell Name ID service. I don’t have the problem with telemarketers on my cell so I passed.

  37. The right wingnut obsession with Madigan continues.

Comment by PublicServant Tuesday, Oct 31, 17 @ 9:05 am

  38. Lisa Madigan telling families to check sex offender registry before trick-or-treating was base fear-mongering.

Parents’ time would be much better spent ensuring that their children’s costumes are visible to drivers.
