*** UPDATED x1 *** Not a great week for Biss

* Tracker photo from the other side of the room…

Oh, man, that’s a long drive for such a small crowd.

* Last night, Biss held a town hall at Springfield’s Abraham Lincoln Unitarian Universalist Congregation. I didn’t see any pics online, but here are some tracker shots…

* In other not great news, Sen. Biss was unable to override a Rauner veto this afternoon…

We live in a state where women make eighty cents for every dollar a man makes, and where the gap is even more drastic…

Posted by Daniel Biss on Thursday, November 9, 2017

* OK, if you click here you’ll see today’s roll call. The override motion received just 29 votes. Now, click here and compare that to when the bill passed. It received 35 votes back then.

So, what happened? Some Republicans flipped (as they did in the House), but some Democrats took a walk. If you compare the override motion roll call to a vote on another bill taken soon after (click here), you’ll see that five of Biss’ fellow Senate Democrats took a walk: Sens. Harris, Hastings, Holmes, Landek and Stadelman. Hmm.

* Not to be Debbie Downer, but Biss’ campaign also has not yet reported any contributions made in November.

* On the bright side…

.@danielbiss receives overwhelming endorsement from @Northside_DFA with 93% vote among members. #ILGov18 https://t.co/8MynvFYfGp

*** UPDATE ***  Carl Nyberg and Melissa Lindberg are co-chairs of Northside DFA’s steering committee. The two have some rather interesting viewpoints about Israel…

Israel violates human rights & international law. It's a racist state. And it undermines peace & stability in the region.

— Carl Nyberg (@CarlNyberg312) September 28, 2017

Sometimes it seems the chief requirement to being Jewish in #CorporateMedia is a willingness to use violence to support Israel.

— Carl Nyberg (@CarlNyberg312) November 7, 2017

@SenatorKIrk Bought by the defense lobby or Israel? Neither is patriotic. #47Traitors Renounce money from both and I'll believe policy diff.

Um… Daniel?

  1. With much apology to House of Pain…

    Stand em up!
    Pack em in!

    Let me begin….

Comment by Puddintaine Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 1:44 pm

  2. On top of what Rich points out, Biss also saw public employees prevail in two appellate court cases - that must have stung the failed pension thief.

Comment by Frequently Blocked By RIch Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 1:45 pm

  3. Wow, that’s terrible. He’s a bad candidate though.

Comment by Ron Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 1:46 pm

  4. Stadelman has endorsed Biss, too, so that’s quite something.

Comment by Arsenal Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 1:48 pm

  5. Biss will need NDFA & Harmon’s DPOP doing 24/7 phone banking.

Comment by Fax Machine Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 1:48 pm

  6. Said it last week and I’ll say it again, Biss should be circulating petitions to keep his Senate seat. He’d be wise not to file for governor seeing as he’s mired in the single digits. The photos above bear out the data’s conclusion: Biss for gov is a slow train to nowhere.

Comment by Reality Check Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 1:50 pm

  7. RC: That’s probably good advice for the Senator.

    Comment by anon2 Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 1:53 pm

  8. Why the long face Daniel?

Comment by Steadman Graham Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 1:58 pm

  9. The tea leaves have spoken.

Comment by Keyser Soze Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 1:59 pm

  10. It’s too late for that - powers that be cleared the way for Laura Fine to take that seat & there are now a few candidates for her seat. If he ran for his old seat, I don’t think Laura would step down, and frankly, I think she’d beat him (although his $2 Million campaign account might say otherwise).

Comment by Fax Machine Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:01 pm

  11. I have been repeatedly right on this race, but too vague. Boring and stable is the way to go, but Biss needs to try another path because with Pritzker and Kennedy, boring, stable and rich is more appealing.

Biss needs to seen as a loose cannon stepping on toes, insulting his opponents’ personal flaws and speaking rudely and bluntly. He wants Bernie Bros? He needs to become a cranky, gassy grouch willing to bark at the moon like Bernie.

    Nice brainiac approach isn’t working.
    Needs more Trump.

Comment by VanillaMan Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:02 pm

  12. Plus, Litesa Wallace gave up her seat to be his running mate so I don’t see him leaving her high & dry

Comment by Fax Machine Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:02 pm

  13. @Fax - yes, Wallace losing her seat in this debacle would be a real shame.

Comment by Reality Check Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:04 pm

  14. Biss showed his true colors when he supported legislation to cut pensions.

As far as I am concerned just another politician.

Comment by skeptic Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:10 pm

  15. Yikes, I really thought he was going to stand a chance but after that Rosa blow up they have just been completely and totally unable to get any wind behind their sales.

After he drops out I wonder if Pawar will regret not sticking around until the end just for the recognition.

Comment by Franklin Delano Bluth Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:11 pm

  16. I thought progressives could pack rooms /snark.

Skeptic - I couldn’t agree more. The architect of pension reform plan is hardly a progressive

Comment by VoteQuimby Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:13 pm

  17. After reading a few articles about the 100th anniversary of the socialist revolution in Russia, I will take this as a good sign.

Maybe being too far left has consequences?

Comment by cdog Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:14 pm

  18. Nice guy, good man. Sorry to see it.

Comment by Molly Maguire Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:19 pm

  19. These pictures are a bit deceptive. I have been to numerous events of Daniel’s and they are well attended. The forums I have gone to show an overwhelming support for Biss. I have also attended several events for JB, none of which were well attended by the public. I attended one event where workers were allowed to stay on the clock while JB fed them, that was well attended. JB has no real public presence or support in my city or the Central part of the state. And there is ZERO enthusiasm for his candidacy.

    Comment by SW1 Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:24 pm

  20. Also I’m kind of surprised NDFA went so heavy for Biss - I though Carlos Rosa was their guy & Biss dropped him like a hot potato

Comment by Fax Machine Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:25 pm

  21. Also, let’s not bury the lede here - Pritzker has so much money he’s paying someone to follow Danie Biss around the state and take pictures of him taking to crowds of 5 people.

Comment by Fax Machine Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:27 pm

  22. Interested about how this tracker photo was obtained…also, I’m sorry, failing to override a veto is an absurd measure of anything considering the number of his bills that have been successful. As for Carl and Melissa of DFA…I guess they can go ahead and find there perfect, litmus test passing, progressive candidate because *shocker*…that candidate doesn’t exist in this Gubernatorial race. I was a Bernie fan and voter in the primary, but people like that who whine over Twitter are (literally) pointless.

Comment by ILDemVoter Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:28 pm

  23. ===Interested about how this tracker photo was obtained===

    With a camera… ?

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:29 pm

  24. I’m wondering for whom the tracker is working.

As for the NDFA/Israel issue: I’m not a fan of Biss, but even I won’t hang that on him. Carl is out on the lefty fringe. Biss should probably respond, but meh.

Comment by Anonish Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:30 pm

  25. ===I have also attended several events for JB, none of which were well attended by the public===

Last night in Spfld not far from Biss’ event: https://capitolfax.com/wp-content/IMG_0504.jpg

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:31 pm

  26. @RM - you know darned good and well what was meant by that question. Who fed the picture to you? JB’s people since they paid for it to be taken?

    Comment by I'mDone Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:36 pm

  27. ===I’m wondering for whom the tracker is working.

Ask them when you see them. Usually they are quite pleasant. I’d be shocked if the tracker wasn’t working for JB. But so what?

Comment by ArchPundit Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:38 pm

  28. ===failing to override a veto is an absurd measure of anything ===

It was gonna fail anyway. The interesting part is that his SDem colleagues took a walk on him.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:41 pm

  29. ===Who fed the picture to you?===

    I didn’t eat it. I posted it.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:43 pm

  30. This feels like a conclusion in search of proof. Biss surely has many events per week, so to cherry-pick two as evidence of waning enthusiasm is dubious at best. I think Biss has also passed more than 80 bills in the legislature in his short time there, so to single out a legislative disappointment as indicative of some larger trend is totally overblown. I have seen Biss live at a few different events, which were all very well attended, and the crowd’s reception to him was similar every time: people are deeply impressed when they hear him speak.

Comment by ChiDemVoter Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:44 pm

  31. ===so to cherry-pick two===

Find me a pic on his Twitter feed from this month showing a large crowd where he wasn’t piggy-backing on another event. This wasn’t a cherry pick.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:47 pm

  32. == I have been to numerous events of Daniel’s and they are well attended.==

Were you at these two events? If not, the fact that other events were well attended doesn’t make these photos deceptive.

==I have also attended several events for JB, none of which were well attended by the public.==

His office opening in Springfield last night got about 200 people.

Comment by Arsenal Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:53 pm

  33. ==The interesting part is that his SDem colleagues took a walk on him.==

Manar’s endorsement of JB was a pretty big tell that SDem leadership wasn’t going out on any limbs for Biss.

Comment by Arsenal Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 3:01 pm

  34. What’s weird is that the override got 80 votes in the House. There’s another story here

Comment by Workin' Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 3:06 pm

  35. ===What’s weird is that the override got 80 votes in the House.===

That was way down from before, tho.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 3:07 pm

  36. NDFA is a volunteer-based progressive organization and is not issues based (which is to say there are no ideological litmus tests.) The personal opinions of their leadership neither reflect those of the organization as a whole nor shape endorsements. NDFA specializes in electoral campaigns. Gaining potentially hundreds of trained volunteers is not bad. Losing the endorsement of NDFA, which has endorsed his previous campaigns, would indeed be a worrisome development for Biss’s campaign.

Comment by Anon and on Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 3:12 pm

  37. Gonna miss Biss. What made him think he ever had a chance? Even if he does make it out of the primary, which he won’t, he can’t win statewide as a north shore liberal.
A little self-realization is in order.

Comment by Winnin’ Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 3:26 pm

  38. Biss probably wants the national DFA organization on board, and the endorsement by NDFA was to check a box for him. I believe they voted to not endorse him at first, but the vote must have been taken again.

NDFA endorsed Nancy Rotering when she ran against Brad Schneider. I wonder what Brad Schneider has to say about Biss’ latest endorsement. Schneider is apparently in charge of vetting these things after the fact.

Comment by TopHatMonocle Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 3:29 pm

  39. To the Post,

I’ve said since Biss got into this race…

Biss needs to go from living rooms, to restaurants, to ball rooms to gymnasiums to pull off the “Bernie-Like” campaign that will be focused on a movement that even Biss can’t control, its growing so quick.

Right now? Right now it appears things are stalled, money might be stalled too.

Biss and Kennedy, for me, are “tied”, less the 8-10% Kennedy gets with that name… but 8-10% is still 8-10% Biss needs to find for himself.

Biss needs Pritzker to falter and Kennedy to implode more than anything… today… the building that has stalled needs a boost.

Biss has stumbled quite a bit (not being snarky by stating it that way), but what Biss has/d is/was a plan to build upon what’s been built, and when the building stops or slows… the pictures above and the noted fundraising too… happen.

Petitions are still out there, but time is now Biss’ friend.

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 3:45 pm

  40. Come on Senator, prove me wrong - that you aren’t a Madigan stalking horse being kept in the race to split the anti-JB vote. That you believe in the reforms Kennedy (and so many others) talk about and are willing to sacrifice your no-chance race to further the chances of it happening.

Comment by lake county democrat Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 3:48 pm

  41. I believe Melissa is running for State Central Committeewoman - for the seat currently held by Cynthia Santos (who I am not sure if she is running for re-election or not)

Comment by Grand Avenue Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 4:08 pm

  42. Stop blaming the messengers for the fact Biss can’t get six people in a room.

This isn’t a Biss problem, it is a campaign strategy problem. I wouldn’t post any pictures for the next three weeks of people doing anything but circulating petitions.

If you are trying to project the image of a grassroots campaign, focus on images of grassroots activities.

Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 5:04 pm

  43. Does the Pritzker campaign also send pictures of Pritzker events that are sparsely attended?

No tracker follows Pritzker, so we really wouldn’t know what attendance is like at every one one of his events.
