Not to mention the entire premise triggers Godwin’s Law. So, the Tribune automatically loses the argument right away. And, man, take a look at their ratio. Whew. Gonna be a long, brutal day at the ivory tower.

Respectfully, this analogy won’t end well for you. First it ignores that LGBT folks are a protected class and Nazi’s, for good reason, are not. Second, should an avowed segregationist have to serve me at a lunch counter? There are grounds to object to this, but boy, it ain’t this

Maybe Proft should buy the Tribune. What a shame, the once might Chicago Tribune with a rich history of great writers and newspaper people would publish an editorial like that. Sheeesh

The Trib has a poor take. But Mitchell also misses the mark.
Wedding cake decoration does have some artistry/expressive component (as much, or more so that something like stripping and nude dancing, which are Supreme Court recognized 1st Am expressive activities). In Mitchell’s example, the lunch counter probably isn’t doing art on top of the lunches that they serve (each BLT is the same as every other regardless of who buys it).
The baker might well be required to sell standard items to anyone who wishes to buy them (i.e. undecorated, or decorated from a “menu” of standard styles), but requiring the baker to decorate in a particular way would appear to bring the 1st Am into it.

The Tribune’s Edit Board has evolved into a commenter on the Illinois Policy Institute’s Facebook page.
Maybe I shoulda said devolved, but where they both are now, intellectually, the IPI Commenters and the Trib’s Edit Board, it’s a tossup at times who ranks above who.

It is really sad that the Chicago Tribune editorial board, which is supposed to be the grown-up, deep thinkers of the conservative movement has so little understanding of the fundamentals of civil rights in our state.

A couple of days ago they were endorsing the federal GOP tax bill that will badly hurt states like IL, lower income and middle class taxpayers, too. IL Dem candidates would be crazy to go before this ed board to seek its endorsement. Like getting endorsed by Fox “News”. Too bad for the reporters whose work is wrapped with the dead fish of the kooky editorialists.

I personally think that the bakeries et. al. should just take the customer’s money, but since a wedding cake is (very, very tangentially) associated with the idea of marriage, which is both secular and religious, I do see a difference between refusing to serve black people and refusing to “participate” in a “religious” ceremony you don’t believe in. Note I have to use quotes because you have to stretch the meanings of both words just a little to get there. The Nazi angle is just asking for trouble though, not neccessary.

Seems like a rare Godwin’s Law twofer.
Not only comparing gay people to Nazis
But also equating Jewish disdain for Nazis to Nazi disdain for gays.
That the Tribune would try to use one group target by the Nazis to defend discrimination against another group discriminated against by the Nazis is not something I could have imagined in this lifetime.
We will see if the Anti-Defamation League weighs in. I hope so.

This is irrelevant. There are also plenty of Christian bakers who would go ahead and do the cake at issue in Masterpiece. It does not negate the free speech rights of the minority who exercise them.

Have some drinks at the Goat with some Trib reporters. Embarrassment about the tronc edit board and a certain grievance-peddling columnist is not uncommon, particularly in instances when it’s obvious that they haven’t read the news pages.

Some Muslims don’t care. Some do.
When I lived under Sharia law, gay wedding cakes were not an issue. Homosexual intercourse was a chopping offense. Saving grace was that proving it without a confession was extremely difficult.
