* Democratic attorney general candidate Scott Dury’s nominating petitions were challenged today by Thomas Rottman. Who is Rottman? He’s a business agent for Operating Engineers Union Local 150.
Remember the second attempt to override Gov. Rauner’s veto of Local 150’s “right to work zone” prohibition bill?…
The measure failed 70-39 on Tuesday. An earlier try at an override failed 70-42. Supporters needed 71 votes to override Rauner. Democratic Rep. Scott Drury of Highwood, who is running for attorney general, voted for override last time but was absent Tuesday.

My guess is this won’t end quickly because it requires interpreting 2 statutes [Election Code and the IL Governmental Ethics Act] that have to be read together. I bet a hearing officer tosses him; state board reinstates; and a court challenge ensues.

Barnes, who sought the Republican nomination in the March 2018 primary, declined to comment or give a reason for ending his campaign. Remaining in the race for the Republican nomination is Air Force Reservist Tanya Hildenbrand and local radio shock jock Bob Romanik.

Anyone know what the Drury objection is based on? I’ve heard it was signatures and I also heard it was the economic interests form. Don’t know which is right.

If you’re running to be the state’s top lawyer don’t screw up your paperwork.
If your campaign to be the state’s top lawyer is based on being the cleanest and the purest in the race (or possibly ever to walk the face of the earth) don’t screw up your economic disclosure form.
He’ll blame Madigan but the truth is he has no one to blame but himself.

Yes, and AFSCME remembers Drury’s no vote in the arbitration bill. Drury, Durkin, and Franks, the three Democrats who voted no on the arbitration bill so we are now three years without a contract.

The law requires you to file a Statement of Economic Interest for each position that requires a filing, whether you’re an officeholder or candidate. This doesn’t mean you have to file two SOEIs, but rather you have to identify both offices on your SOEI. If you hold one office and run for another, technically you’re supposed to refile with the name of the office you seek. This may seem ridiculous, but it ensures statements of economic interest are cross references appropriately. It isn’t difficult to update your SOEI. In fact, Drury could have easily submitted a new SOEI indicating his current office and candidate for the office of Attorney General. He didn’t and that’s a valid reason to challenge his petitions.

==-FHRYS-Nothing to see here. Drury’s statement is on file and - from what I can tell - none of the questions on the form relate to any specific office. This kind of technical challenge is what makes people hate politics.

Pretty low on the list, since it means pols are actually following rules and held somewhat accountable against them.
