Some Tribune editorial board highlights

Posted in:

* During the Tribune editorial board meeting today, Gov. Rauner said he doesn’t lead on social issues. Rep. Jeanne Ives begged to differ

Ives contended Rauner’s signature on legislation that expanded taxpayer-subsidized abortions for women covered by Medicaid and state employee health insurance demonstrated that all the governor accomplished in his first term was a “progressive social agenda.”

“He told us he would veto the bill,” she said. He lied to a cardinal,” she said, a reference to Cardinal Blase Cupich.

Rauner would not say what he told Cupich about the abortion legislation, but called Ives’ allegations “outrageous.”

“There are a lot of politics swirling around the bill,” said Rauner, who repeatedly added that “the simple fact is I support a woman’s right to decide.” The governor said his choice to sign the bill was either to “follow what I believe or do politics.”

* Other highlights…

"That was quite a filibustering screed." - @GovRauner to the often-interrupting @JeanneIves at their @Trib_ed_board joint-appearance where she oddly defended Madigan from being called a crook by Rauner who made the implausible claim he can unseat the speaker. @wlsam890 #ilgov

— Bill Cameron (@billjcameron) January 29, 2018

Ives: Rauner had a social agenda, it turns out. It's his wife's agenda.

Rauner: More false, vicious attacks.

Ives: I said it nicely.

— ChiTrib Clout Street (@ChiTribCloutSt) January 29, 2018

"I said it nicely" — lunch on me to the first State Rep. who uses that line in debate. #Twill

— Kyle Hillman (@kylehillman) January 29, 2018

Rauner: "The representative has said things that aren't true, repeatedly."

Says he has introduced balanced budgets, they've been ignored by General Assembly.

(This is generally not true. Even his first budget relied on a multi-billion dollar pension change of dubious legality.)

— ChiTrib Clout Street (@ChiTribCloutSt) January 29, 2018

"you don't need legislative authority to propose a balanced budget. He never proposed a balanced budget" Ives says….Rauner counters………"That's false." ……

— yvette shields (@Yvette_BB) January 29, 2018

Rauner asked why he had meetings at governor's mansion about his private business.

No private business was conducted on public property. That issue is a contract dispute that stemmed from before I was governor.

— ChiTrib Clout Street (@ChiTribCloutSt) January 29, 2018

Presumably some online wisenheimer will do a supercut of all the times Rauner laughed/chuckled at his opponent during this debate.

Rauner says Madigan "would love nothing more" than Ives to win the GOP primary because "I am the only person at this table who can beat Pritzker in November."

— Tribune Edit Board (@Trib_ed_board) January 29, 2018

What will be different in second term? Rauner: "Not only will I be able to block the gerrymandering from Madigan this time, but I led the effort to get two lawsuits to SCOTUS. These two lawsuits will transform Illinois."

— Tribune Edit Board (@Trib_ed_board) January 29, 2018

Rauner: "My first few years in office, I've laid the dramatic change for my second term."
Ives: "That is completely untrue."

And the time he cites as getting over on Madigan, he says he got Ken Dunkin not to come down to Spfld on the arbitration bill. He got voted out in '16, he's back on the ballot now. Your choice, 5th District.

— dri (@DriXander) January 29, 2018

Ives likens Republican distaste for Rauner to their diasaffection with Mark Kirk when he lost a Senate seat.

— Mark Jacob (@MarkJacob16) January 29, 2018

Jeanne Ives sounds really, really mean. And Bruce Rauner sounds really, really thick. https://t.co/sKURmUemp2

Interesting that Gov. @BruceRauner's campaign hasn't made a peep about this ed board meeting on Facebook or Twitter

What's he worried about?#ilgov #twill

— Illinois Working Together (@IllinoisWorking) January 29, 2018

…Adding… Pritzker campaign…

“After manufacturing a 736-day budget crisis, adding billions to our state’s bill backlog, holding school funding hostage, and decimating Illinois’ social safety net, there aren’t many questions that are easy for Bruce Rauner to answer,” said Pritzker campaign spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh. “After today, it’s no surprise Rauner doesn’t want to defend his failed leadership.”

  5. Bruce Rauner 100% has Diana Rauner’s uber-left, costal limousine liberal social agenda.

Signatures on things that wouldn’t even be possible in California speaks to that.

No way is Bruce Rauner in the ball park of the Reagan Rule of 80% in social agenda policies.

Conservatives and pro-life base Republicans were duped. Bruce Rauner has abandoned those Republicans, and can’t be seen within Reagan’s Rule, and not telling truth to a Catholic Cardinal is far beyond policy, but ethics.

  6. No knock it our blow from Ives. No unforced error by Rauner. She needed a game changer and it didn’t happen. Rauner needed to play conservative and avoid mistakes. They both did what they set out to do. But failing to create a moment that will be seen by many, means status quo remains in tact. Rauner wins unless something major changes.

Now is the time to not let relatively small differences cause division. There is no Quinn to be mad at now, no Bernie vs. Hillary battles. It’s beyond ideological differences and party affiliation. Now is the time for all good women and men to line up, shield to shield, shoulder to shoulder, to prepare for battle that is needlessly waged by Rauner and the very few who could retire many thousands of times over and who have no idea what it’s like to live paycheck to paycheck.

  25. The tronc edit board proves once again that it does not read the Chicago Tribune news pages.

    – Ever heard of a vets home in Quincy?

    – How about the stank on that Medicaid contract, the biggest ever in state history, that went from $40B to $63B in a week, with no explanation?

    – The FUBAR on state school funding — that was in the Trib today.

    – what’s with the IT pinstripe patronage army getting paid first, all the time?

    – Rauner claimed he’s introduced balanced budgets, and the deep thinkers let that go unchallenged?

    – There is no blind trust. Will Rauner disclose his investments that do business with Illinois governments?

And on and on and on…..

Chicago tough guy Johnny Kass was a meek little daisy, wasn’t he? No questions that he got from his anonymous guys on the street that always provide the perfect quote? Probably nervous that he was missing something important on Fox News. Not one question about the The Return of the Cellini Gang and fat state leases. He used to think that was a big deal.

So does Rauner take the tronc edit board out for dinner and a movie tonight? Or did he just leave behind some tic-tacs?

You should try telling to the Daily Herald…

    The headline

“Rauner to sign immigration bill making Illinois a sanctuary state”

    Or Hoy/Chicago Tribune

“Illinois is officially a ‘sanctuary state’ for immigrants”

    John Kass disagrees…

“Gov. Rauner opens a breach with conservatives over sanctuary state”

    Sen. McCarter thinks so too…

===“I said this could be the last straw, and every day I’m feeling it worse,” Republican state Sen. Kyle McCarter told The Chicago Tribune. “And this isn’t just the ‘right wing’ that’s angry. Here’s the link to the Post that was here on the Blog about the signing and the differences, including…

===Illinois offered newfound security to immigrants on Monday, spelling out in a new law that state and local police shouldn’t double as immigration agents and encouraging immigrants to report crimes without fear of reprisals for their immigrant status.===

===Specifically, under the new law, state and local police cannot arrest or detain someone on the basis of immigration status alone. This prohibition does not apply if there is a valid judicial warrant. Similarly, state and local police are prohibited from arresting or detaining someone based on what’s known as an “immigration detainer,” which is a civil document issued by an immigration agent, not a criminal warrant issued by a judge and supported by probable cause.

Across the country, there have been news accounts of crimes going unreported in immigrant communities because victims fear they will end up arrested for lacking immigration documents if they report the crimes. The proposal Cullerton sponsored and the governor signed is designed to foster trust between police and immigrant communities and refocus resources on fighting priority crimes.===

    http://bit.ly/2DMxNVZ

The difference is the dog whistle the likes of Ives, Kass, McCarter, and others want the signed Bill to be or mean, and that Rauner wants to run on what the Bill says, and hoping it means more that what it does.

I find it interesting and bring it up as part of this Rauner shunning hard core conservative issues that Ives wants to highlight, and not deep diving into them, as to fear it makes him look too liberal right now, in Primary season.

    Purposely.–

    With you, Willie.

One of the proudest acts of my life was helping folks under the Reagan/Simpson/Mazzoli bill get straightened out.

A quirk in the law said working folks in eastern Iowa had to go to Des Moines (four hour drive), rather than cross the river and do the same in Rock Island.

I and my deskmate at the Quad-City Times, Cheri Bustos, raised hell and lined up Chuck Grassley, Terry Branstad, Jim Thompson, Tom Harkin, Paul Simon, Alan Dixon, Lane Evans and Jim Leach to help those good people get legal.

Just like Pres. Reagan and HW wanted it.

  48. http://www.ilchiefs.org/current-bills-and-ilacp-positions

There was a lot of misunderstanding about this bill, which clarifies that local law enforcement agencies are not authorized to enforce federal civil immigration laws. The association received some pushback after we announced our support for it. But our support came only after the earlier original language was changed, with the worst provisions of the bill removed. Gone from the bill was language that would have allowed people to sue the police for damages resulting from violations of this act and would have prevented ICE agents from being in a local police station. After the bill passed the Senate, other law enforcement lobbyists, such as the Illinois State Police and Illinois Sheriffs Association, continued to work the bill and strengthened the bill for law enforcement, including getting immunity for police acting in good faith. In the end, the bill does not prohibit local police from arresting immigrants for violations of state law, and it does not prohibit local police from being in communication with federal agencies. The bill was amended substantially six times – three times in the Senate and then three more in the House. We were in the negotiations all along and plan to do some training on the complexities of the bill. Some people continue to say this law makes Illinois a sanctuary state, but that is wrong.

First, thank you for doing this… ===…helping folks under the Reagan/Simpson/Mazzoli bill get straightened out.===

… and thanks for fully understanding Reagan and HW and how they and history are far different than what we’re witnessing today.

I wanted to point out the obvious, that the press was an enabler here for the “Kass Kids” and everyone willing to embrace that false narrative.

When I use it, I use it as a red flag, obvious, pivot that the likes of Proft or Ives use so left-handedly to run “like Trump” but still not go “full Trump”

Looking at the Kass snippet, it’s what I say to those protecting the Governor…

===It was Rauner who invited the Republican primary challenge by signing a sanctuary state bill into law and by signing House Bill 40, which provides for taxpayer-funded abortions. Republican lawmakers and even Roman Catholic Cardinal Blase Cupich said he lied to them.===

The difference is I read it as a political play, as does Proft, but Proft sells it to Ives and “conservatives” as policy mistakes by Rauner, reasons to work against Rauner, misunderstood policies, but made to anger the angry.

The problem is to get to the General, Rauner would like to explain the TRUST Act but the “Kass Kids” already know… it’s a sanctuary bill… and like HB40 (which is what it is, misleading a Cardinal notwithstanding) it makes a nice lil narrative, half baked and half compromised, and I see the play, and it grinds on Rauner, but it has never meant that while seeing the argument, it’s credible to what Reagan and HW meant when addressing immigration, but it is what Rauner is facing due to his own failures on everything else.

Thanks again for helping those folks.

Something to indeed take real pride.
