* Yeah, it’s Morning Consult, and their methodology is more than a bit opaque, but they’ve got Gov. Rauner’s job approval numbers, so let’s take a look…
Approve: 31
Disapprove: 55
Don’t know, uncertain: 14
According to the firm, he’s more unpopular than Maine’s Paul LaPage, Wisconsin’s Scott Walker and Michigan’s Rick Snyder.
* But here’s something interesting. Morning Consult released a poll last summer that was taken April 1 through July 10. Here are Rauner’s numbers…
Approve: 40
Disapprove: 49
Don’t know, uncertain: 11
So, he was still underwater back then, but he was doing significantly better than he is now.
What changed? Well, do you remember what happened on July 10th, the last day of the poll? The governor began a purge of his administration by firing his chief of staff Richard Goldberg and bringing in people from the Illinois Policy Institute.
By the time the next results were released in October, Rauner’s approval rating fell to 30 percent and his disapproval had risen to 55 percent. Pretty much exactly where they are today.

New national polling by Morning Consult shows that Bruce Rauner is the least popular Republican governor running for reelection, with a net approval rating of -24.
The new polling comes as Bruce Rauner is facing a strong challenge from his own party, with primary opponent Jeanne Ives holding him accountable while he dodges responsibility. As Rauner flails in his re-election bid, he has desperately attempted to defend his nonexistent record, earning him the title of the Worst Republican Governor in America.
“Bruce Rauner can’t defend his own record, can’t name a single real accomplishment, and has mismanaged the state government with fatal consequences,” said Pritzker campaign spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh. “The most vulnerable incumbent in the country is under water as Illinoisans prepare to end his reign of crisis and devastation across Illinois.”

Wow - these Rauner numbers are toxic. Wasn’t sure they would stay this low but that’s some serious headwind to overcome in the fall. No wonder he doesn’t want to face someone who can spending millions reminding people how much they hate Rauner and why.

Rauner has done a terrible job, so no surprise. He acts like a victim and not a governor. He’s like a child and blames others.
The state is far worse off directly because of Rauner, so he earns this.

Geez, Snyder? His Health and Human Services director and other administration peeps have been charged with involuntary manslaughter over Legionairre’s Diseases deaths in Flint.
That’s a GOP attorney general climbing the ladder on a GOP governor.
And he’s more popular than Rauner?

His whole campaign strategy is “The other guy is worse”, Not much of a strategy when you can not point to any success during your term of office. Rauner has lost the confidence of even his early supporters. With few exceptions, even the Republicans in the GA have seen the light. I don’t see a path to reelection for him. He should keep his money and move back to his previous profession. Rauner’s ego won’t allow it, but it would be something to consider.

That is the only strategy that can lead to victory when you are incumbent with disapproval above 50%. See David Axelrod for details on 2002 Vilsack reelect in Iowa.

The Governor hasn’t given the voters a whole lot to work with when it comes to approval ratings. He’s not accomplished anything. His entire strategy is that nothing is his fault and that he’s not in charge. When the chief executive absolves himself of all responsibility and shows a clear inability to lead what exactly is there to approve of?

Rauner is an ideologue - a true believer in his core assumptions about people, work, education and economic growth. Without that, he wouldn’t be able to come to work everyday, let alone maintain his message. All he is lacking is support and any evidence that his core assumptions are valid.

Somewhat shocking to learn that the poll findings did not list Rauner as the worst. It made me wonder what the Alaskan Governor had been doing? As for Walker in Wisconsin, I think that it may be simply a matter of fatigue. Third term campaigns can be a career killer. In Illinois, only Oglesby and Thompson managed to serve more than two terms
and Oglesby’s terms were staggered.

I kind of have my doubts that staffing changes get enough attention to move a Governor’s numbers. I think that 40-49 number was just a blip; as I recall, it was proceeded by noticeably worse polls, to such an extent that when we saw it people wondered if his most recent ads (I think it was the duct tape ones?) were working.
In other words, I suspect Rauner has been consistently unpopular since about the end of ‘16. He had serious problems before that, and Trump’s election just dropped the bottom out underneath him. He’s now firmly in Pat Quinn territory.

John McCain always had a funny comment when referencing congressional approval ratings , which were/are even lower than 30% - at that point, approval is down to “paid staff and blood relatives.”

As a white male, I’m certain that last summer was a train wreck for Rauner. It caused the press to finally recognize how ignorant he is about his job. The change in the tone of reporting was dramatic.
Remember the deer-in-the-headlights when Rauner claimed all he needed was a “simple majority” to sustain his education bill veto? How embarrassing is that for a governor 2.5 years in? When he didn’t say a word for days about the floods up north, even after Gov. Walker had called up the guard just a few miles away across the border?
The old crew was able to hide his shallowness. The new crew could not, because they were more clueless than he is.

Rauner is the worst Republican Governor in America… now the 7th from the bottom in popularity.
Failure will do that.
Rauner can’t run a race on himself. He knows that. Even the costumes fail.
