*** UPDATED x1 - Stand for Children responds *** Pritzker airs second anti-Biss ad, Biss claims Pritzker is “flailing”

I already told subscribers about the issues the ad brings up, but you can see some other background info by clicking here.

* From Galia Slayen at the Pritzker campaign…

We are confident that JB’s message of beating Bruce Rauner and bringing real change to Illinois is resonating with voters across the state. After Dan Biss became the first Democrat to run attack ads in the Democratic primary last week, it’s clear that voters deserve to know the facts about Biss’ real record in Springfield.

* From the Biss campaign…

Today, JB Pritzker released his second attack ad in two days against Daniel Biss. The ads follow a We Ask America poll from earlier this week showing Biss surging with momentum since October while Pritzker loses support, despite spending $21 million on his campaign since then. That total does not include Pritzker’s latest contribution of an additional $7 million dollars from January 25. Pritzker’s primary spending now tops Donald Trump’s in the 2016 presidential primary in all 50 states.

“With his numbers dropping, JB is flailing,” said Biss campaign manager Abby Witt. “Clearly JB is nervous, and he should be. As voters see the choice between another billionaire and a middle class progressive that will make billionaires pay their fair share, Daniel Biss’ numbers are surging and JB’s are plummeting. So it’s no wonder we’re seeing another sloppy attempt to muddy the choice voters are making in this election.

“While middle-class families like Daniel’s send their kids to neighborhood public schools and struggle to pay their property taxes, JB profits from privatizing education and pulls the toilets out of his mansion to get a break on his taxes. If he truly cared about fully funding our public schools, JB Pritzker should pay his fair share in taxes instead of inventing schemes to profit off the backs of working families.”

*** UPDATE *** From Stand for Children Illinois…

Stand for Children and its members across the state of Illinois support public education, not school privatization. We have fought relentlessly for adequate and equitable funding for public schools and will continue the fight to make sure public school students have the quality education they deserve and teachers have the supports they need.

  1. Not a bad effort to let the public know what Bliss is really al about. He tried pension theft, and the went after public schools. Not my type of progressive.

Comment by Retired Educator Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 9:34 am

  2. Can Biss commit cash to air a billionaire-buffer-mansion-toilet-spot?

I bet you could find whiz kid creatives to do it on spec just to have it on their reel, the hook is so good.

Maybe he should have a contest. Put the best on his web site and have a vote for the one to go on the TV box.

Comment by wordslinger Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 9:38 am

  3. Does a negative ad work if you call the opponent by a different name? The Dan/Daniel thing sounds kind of weird, but I guess it helps people get to the oppo website.
That said, Biss campaign is correct that Pritzker shifting to this is a sign of nervousness.

Comment by State Sen. Clay Davis Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 9:40 am

  4. Biss’ campaign is the equivalent of a castle built out of saltines. You can’t run as a progressive when the unions hate you and your record contradicts everything you’re saying on the campaign trail.

    Comment by Angel's Sword Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 9:41 am

  5. There’s a :15 second marker on Labor…

    Now a :15 second marker on schools…

Building a drumbeat of “this and that” to revisit to culminate in Biss’ framing (as the Pritzker Crew would prefer) of someone who isn’t who they say they are.

Rauner ran ads like “Careerfellas” and went after his primary opponents, framing them, having them chase while being swamped… will Pritzker begin the swamping off these markers?

Oh… and Rauner gave no quarter to a failed sitting governor, with a minor primary squabble, but going after that governor, ginning up “…. …. failed”

Pritzker needs to get this rolling now, it’s time. Time is a’wasting. Get to work.

    To Biss,

You can claim all you want that it’s “good” to be attacked, and all that “scared” rhetoric… but gotta answer. You’ve had the “field” to yourself, no negative ads as you went after otters. Now what? Gotta keep up now, gotta go after it, gotta take it to the next level. Can you?

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 9:48 am

  6. Biss has a record of bad votes on progressive and union issues. You might not like the toilet/property tax thing JB has in his background, but Biss’s bad votes are more problematic.

Comment by Pot calling kettle Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 9:50 am

  7. The public worker unions should take notice that while they might be fine with a “progressive” who couldn’t tell the difference between Obama and Romney/Gingrich and seems completely untroubled if the county assessor robs from the poor to give to the rich, the rest of the party isn’t, even with all that party backing and his endless deep pockets. I still don’t think Biss has much of a shot, but that’s up from “no shot” - Chris, you want to do the state a favor, get Biss to commit to push certain reforms (he’s not much of a reformer) if elected and endorse.

Comment by lake county democrat Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 9:53 am

  8. Not a good ad. Incoherent, lazy and ineffective. Giving an assignment to viewers/voters to go somewhere else to “take a look for yourself”. Really? That one’s not going to move or inspire very many voters. D grade.

Comment by Responsa Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 9:56 am

  9. –Giving an assignment to viewers/voters to go somewhere else to “take a look for yourself”. –

It’s called a Call to Action in advertising. And it adds credibility to the claim by informing the audience that there are independent sources to back it up.

Comment by wordslinger Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 9:59 am

  10. This is a good ad because it hits Biss on something he’s not owning up to. He’s flip flopped on everything to appeal to progressives, but his past support for charters seems to be a kind of third rail he won’t admit to. The questionnaire they reference says in Biss’ own words that he was a volunteer teacher at charter schools, which flies in the face of his current position.

Comment by TopHatMonocle Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 10:06 am

  11. Yeah, I know exactly what a “call to action” in advertising and marketing is and how it can sometimes be used very effectively. And it ain’t what’s in that commercial. Sending viewers off to a competitor’s website is nuts.

Comment by Responsa Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 10:09 am

  12. ===Sending viewers off to a competitor’s website is nuts.===

    LOL

It’s a site run by the Pritzker campaign. C’mon, man.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 10:12 am

  13. It’s trying to push progressives away from Biss. The Pritzker campaign is investing a lot of money and time in this. They want it.

Comment by Grandson of Man Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 10:14 am

  14. –Sending viewers off to a competitor’s website is nuts.–

    LOL, yes, it would be.

    Take a look for yourself.

Comment by wordslinger Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 10:14 am

  15. I don’t see this as nervousness, just nailing shut the coffin. Biss/Kennedy haven’t been able to move numbers downstate, Kennedy is imploding, so it’s time for Pritzker to lock down enough in Chicago to seal the deal.

And Biss pandering for Pritzker’s money after making it the focal point of his attacks just shows what a phony progressive hypocrite he is. Good riddance.

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 10:14 am

  16. Lake Co D = Your are correct. Biss needs to woo Kennedy and make a deal.

Comment by NorthsideNoMore Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 10:14 am

  17. This is politics 101. Don’t let your opponent define himself. For months Biss has been defining himself in a way that is completely inconsistent with his record. Pritzker is finally pointing this out. This is a very, very rich vein to mine. I suspect there’s a helluva lot more to come.

    Comment by Anon0091 Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 10:35 am

  18. ===This is a very, very rich vein to mine===

Yes, it is. I just Googled “Daniel Biss” and “fracking.”

    Yipe.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 10:42 am

  19. Daniel’s fracking vote should be a deal breaker for environmentalists. Daniel’s full embrace of Blair Hull should be a deal breaker for feminists. Daniel’s campaign and his consultants have been playing the purity game since they got in. Rosa burned them on purity in September. The fracking and Blair Hull donation will burn Daniel next.

Comment by DanDonor Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 10:49 am

  20. come on Eric Adelstein. create some magic.

Comment by Amalia Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 10:56 am

  22. –come on Eric Adelstein. create some magic.–

He made $680K disappear from Kennedy’s campaign fund last quarter for “media consulting” without airing a spot. That’s Harry Potter-like wizardry.

–Adelstein isn’t doing Biss - he’s doing Kennedy.–

So tempting. But likely a banning offense.

  25. **He made $680K disappear from Kennedy’s campaign fund last quarter for “media consulting” without airing a spot. **

Uhh… that isn’t true. Kennedy was TV for 3-4 weeks in November/December. Almost that entire amount of that $680k went to the TV buy.

Comment by SaulGoodman Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 11:17 am

  26. I appreciate the Biss campaign’s attempt to spin this, but this isn’t good for them. He’s got a record of not always being so progressive. He can apologize and make excuses for those votes all he wants, but it dings his credibility and he doesn’t have enough $ to punch back.

What was the spot? I truly can’t place it, and I usually latch onto them.

The buy ended up being a total of around $550k, if I remember correctly.

==Yes, it is. I just Googled “Daniel Biss” and “fracking.”

I’m unable to understand the far left wing of the IL dem party. They say they want a real progressive, and they flock to the guy who claims to be a progressive - but who actually has a track record that clearly shows is the least progressive of all these candidates except Daiber. Do they just want someone to mouth platitudes at them and say “Bernie Sanders” as much as possible? Why have they become the base for Daniel Biss, of all people? From charters to fracking to pensions to supporting Blair Hull to the environmental stuff, this guy has been nowhere near as progressive as he claims. And he has even deeper ties to Madigan that his opponents. Then the left wing types get mad at Pritzker when he runs an ad pointing that out to them?

Can anyone explain this? I don’t get it.

    Comment by Lester Holt’s Mustache Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 12:11 pm

  34. Lester - because the far left is scared of money. Because the far left can’t raise it, and usually gets beat by it, so they attack anyone that has it as the problem. Daniel, to his credit, always painted himself like a progressive, but fundraised as an insider. Progressives don’t know about his actual fundraising, ties to madigan, compromising votes, etc. they thought he was “pure,” without examination.

Just watch. This is only jbs second attack ad. There’s going to be one of these every couple of days until the election on buss’ flip flopping.

    Daniel poked a bear.

  36. Stand for Chicago responds? Jonah Ettleman, other funders and staff have always supported charters, vouchers and others forms of privatization - remember Jonah’s famous rant about how they had pulled one over on Madigan and the General Assembly with SB7 and the enhanced strike vote for CTU to authorize a strike? Stand (or sit) or respond if you must but let’s be honest, they are for privatization they just call it others names…..
