Question of the day

Posted in:

* Instead of a question, let’s rate what is reported to be Rep. Jeanne Ives’ first TV ad

* Script

I grew up in a farming community in South Dakota. I was raised to speak plainly, work hard for what you want and respect others who do the same.

My name is Jeanne Ives. I’m running against Bruce Rauner for the Republican nomination for governor because Rauner deserted the conservative families like mine, who elected him.

I will not lie, cheat or steal, or tolerate others who do.

There must be a reckoning for Rauner’s betrayal. Join me and get the revolution you were promised.

  1. revolution? you mean rollback.

  2. It’s a good intro ad.

At the risk of sounding sexist (I’m not) or superficial (I am), I thought the hair over her eye was distracting. I wanted to brush it back for her.

  3. Good ad but what TV?

Comment by DuPage Bard Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 2:25 pm

  4. That’s bottom-barrel budget editing right there. So many professionals videographers and you hire freshman at Columbia College.

  5. ==That’s bottom-barrel budget editing right there. So many professionals videographers and you hire freshman at Columbia College.==

Dan Proft was waitlisted at Columbia.

  6. I don’t think the premise of her promise (”I will out-conservative Rauner”) works for Illinois. Rauner wasn’t elected on the same platform Ives is running on.

That said, the ad itself is fine. I just don’t think her ideals resonate with most voters.

Comment by Dome Gnome Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 2:31 pm

  7. As an ad, just an ad, it’s not too bad. “B / B-“

    “Why?”

She introduces herself, she shows her family, tells who she is running against, and why she’s running.

Cookie-cutter, “conservative” reasoning, checks a bunch of boxes, gets her name out.

    It’s a “B / B-“

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 2:33 pm

  8. Usually a candidate tries to smile and be happy about running. She looked kind of angry throughout. But hey, you can’t start a happy revolution.

    Comment by 360 Degree TurnAround Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 2:34 pm

  9. “I will not lie, cheat or steal, or tolerate others who do.”

    Nonsense.

Jeanie Ives tolerated everything Bruce Rauner did right up until HB 40.

Have you met Jeanne? She looks happier in that ad than she did on her wedding day.

  11. I thought there were rules/guidelines in place when it came to showing military uniforms in campaign ads? Does someone with more knowledge than me know if that is true or did I just make it up in my head? Also, if it is true does this ad clear those rules?

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 2:38 pm

  12. Count all of the people who are picture in this ad (including the group shots of the soccer teams.) Then count all of the people of color who appear in the ad. (I’ll help you: One.)

    Wow.

  13. West Point Honor Code. nice

Comment by walker Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 2:44 pm

  14. Why mention South Dakota? Just say you were raised in a farming community and you graduated from West Point. Yes, she has visuals, but why not say it as opposed to mentioning a different state?

And “revolution”??? Why not “lower taxes”?

C- production values. Talk about a “farming community” and you’re sitting on a couch in the living room?

Comment by Moe Berg Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 2:44 pm

  15. Veterans who are no longer active members of the military don’t need to worry about including this disclaimer on their campaign materials if they include an old picture of themselves in uniform. You shouldn’t, however, try to design commercials, fliers, brochures or advertisements in a way that is intended to trick voters into thinking that you’re still an active member of the United States military.

Anonyomous that’s a free one but the Google works wonders.

Comment by DuPage Bard Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 2:46 pm

  16. ===I thought there were rules/guidelines in place when it came to showing military uniforms in campaign ads?===

It’s mostly for active members. But you are traditionally supposed to include a disclaimer.

Comment by PJ Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 2:47 pm

  17. “There must be a reckoning for Rauner’s betrayal.” In my opinion that’s too close to “the day of reckoning” and Illinois is not in the bible belt.

Comment by NoGifts Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 2:48 pm

  18. ==get the revolution you were promised==

Revolution? What onerous yoke have you (and your conservative followers) been under?

Comment by Jocko Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 2:48 pm

  19. “I thought there were rules/guidelines in place when it came to showing military uniforms in campaign ads? Does someone with more knowledge than me know if that is true or did I just make it up in my head? Also, if it is true does this ad clear those rules?”

Members of the Armed Forces may not wear the
uniform during or in connection with furthering
political activity or when an inference of official
sponsorship for the activity may be drawn.

Jeanie Ives is a civilian, so she can use her military uniform like a cheap theater prop if she so chooses.

  20. A+. It’s the first known instance of anyone seeing Ives smile.

Comment by Marty Funkhouser Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 2:51 pm

  21. Ives comes off as very much believing in what she says. I give her credit for that. I doubt she will be one to try and lie to hide who she really is.

And that is why she doesn’t have much of a chance, her true self, does not mesh with Illinois. Obviously she has a following, but it isn’t going to be nearly enough.

Comment by JS Mill Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 2:51 pm

  22. Considering that Ives’ main impediment at this point is lack of awareness of her as an alternative to Rauner in the primary, the ad works. The voters she is trying to appeal to in the primary will likely respond to her simple, straightforward approach. The low end production values don’t hurt in my estimation. Knowing her audience, I give it a B.

The question is will she have enough dough to run it often enough to burn it in, especially in the suburbs and downstate?

Comment by Dance Band on the Titanic Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 2:52 pm

  23. Sorry to disagree with most of my friends here but that’s a bad ad. With grade inflation maybe it’s a C. The production values are weak. The messaging is muddled. The visuals are ok, but cheap (just pics and no video?). I can’t stand her but hope she does better against Rauner.

Comment by Chicago Cynic Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 2:52 pm

  24. That wasn’t a bad ad at all.

Comment by Linus Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 2:57 pm

  25. Wheaton appears to be nearly 90% Caucasian, I don’t think she had any control on how many people of color play soccer in Wheaton. Seeing that most of the other people in the ad are family I guess they would probably be as Caucasian as she is. Seems like someone being pretty petty.

Comment by Stand Tall Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 3:00 pm

  26. “Jeanie Ives is a civilian, so she can use her military uniform like a cheap theater prop if she so chooses.” - Service to her Country is something she has a right to be proud of and is used by many running for political office on both sides of the aisle.

Comment by Stand Tall Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 3:05 pm

  27. Unimpressive. She didn’t mention at all how she serves in the GA. That would have given her a little more credibility in my opinion.

    Comment by Boone's is Back Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 3:10 pm

  28. Soccermom: had she used people of color “as props”, you’d be claiming hypocrisy. Pick a lane.

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 3:14 pm

  29. MrJM - Cheap theater prop - Paul Schimpf prosecuted Sadam Hussein, Stephanie Kifowit Marine, Mike Hastings multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan…… shall I keep going?
Your past defines your present and your future, Ives is a graduate of West Point, an incredibly honorable and difficult achievement.

Military service proves a willingness to sign a piece of paper and put your life on the line for your country, for the freedom of others. Betting not many members of the GA would do that today much less when they were an 18 year old kid.
    Do better.

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 3:19 pm

  30. This ad should have been focused on her (i.e. mention GA service), then do a full ad about Rauner - I don’t know that most Republicans voters know what she means when she says betrayal.

Then again, maybe Rauner wants her to attack him explicitly for signing HB40 because then it tells moderates who will vote in November that he signed it

Comment by Grand Avenue Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 3:19 pm

  31. Decent intro spot. Needs followups on the “betrayals” that she mentions.

I wouldn’t have mentioned SD, and I would have been explicit on her experience.

It ain’t slick, but I think that’s a good thing for her anti-Rauner message. He’s way slick.

  32. The take away: We’re clean faced white people with good dental work. Vote for us.

Comment by IllinoisBoi Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 3:24 pm

  33. I’ll give it a solid B. It allow her to introduce herself. I would have liked to see her on the farm…a bit more of her military career and maybe not so much of “Bruce Rauner lied…”

But, for the budget and time she had, it’s pretty solid.

Comment by Commonsense in Illinois Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 3:48 pm

  34. Why was I thinking of Darth Vader when she said “Join me”?? Authoritarian regime that allows no freedom and suppresses opposition. Hmmm.

Comment by Steve Rogers Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 3:53 pm

  35. My kids are too old to be in those pictures, but
I am deeply offended that she would use the St Michael’s Lancers as a backdrop. Anyone check
to see if there are photo releases from each and every one of those children and their families?

Comment by illinoisvoter Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 5:03 pm

  36. And I will pit Chicago vs. Illinois every chance I get with dog whistles, I will also spew hate towards unions, reproductive rights, protections against hate crimes and attack LGBT rights…just another ugly, bigoted republicon.
